THE 2024 OUTSIDER ART FAIR NEW YORK

James Klam always make room in his schedule to visit and document the Outsider Art Fair. Since its inception, in 1993 your correspondent has looked forward to wandering the aisles and exploring the booths, looking for undiscovered treasures in this unique fair. This year is no exception, some of the finds would include: Georgia Russell’s “Glamour Dolls” at Joshua Lowenfels Works of Art, Ricco/Maresca Gallery’s “Unique Circus Posters” (a collection of preliminary working drawings), and cut and glued antique linoleum paintings by Bill Miller at DeFirma. This has become perhaps my favorite annual NYC art show, and I'm sure I'm not alone. It's such a refuge of surprises, innocence, and art that isn't quite so hell-bent on *professionalism.* Melvin Way, Melvin Milky Way - I love it! He is a real star of this genre. I really appreciated your thoughts on the subject of Kitsch. Ive been digging into it myself for years, and ive realised it is harder and harder to define the more I learn about it. I recommend the book "Ugly, the aesthetics of everything". It has some really good insights. Kitsch seems to be one of the more important elements of "art" in general and yet it seems to be rarely if ever mentioned. Koons, Currin and Yuskavage, just to name a few, are all deeply exploring the spaces of Kitsch in their practices.

I see in NY you can sell your paintings on the street. In France (and Paris) it's not allowed unless you have a permit and pay taxes on items sold. I hope the street artist sells a few! 😊

The selling of art and books on the streets of New York is theoretically covered by the First Amendment, that is "freedom of speech"(?) I chatted with the artist on the street latter, and he did say he sold a piece ($50)...JK

Thanks @TheKunstlich for the gimbal suggestion. I don't want to bore you (or other viewers) so I'll keep this brief. I've been thinking about gimbals for several years, and spent weeks doing research and watching reviews and tutorials last year. After many, many hours and, trips to photo stores, consultations and all the associated efforts, I had to decide that the cost (not in money but time and effort) out weighted the benefits. I won't go further than that because we'd be here for hours...But thanks again...JK
