Thanks for this race recap video. Hopefully UTMB climbs will feel better due to relatively less intensity needed compared to a 50k race. I can't imagine the grind it takes to keep trying to make the best out of yourself. Wish you a great race in Chamonix with a strong finish whatever the place. You've got this Sage!

The fact that you feel the breathing issue more on inclines versus flat ground is interesting. It makes me think that the breathing patterns are different in those instances. Maybe incline forces deeper breathing which causes the lungs to expand more which triggers the issue? In any event, maybe that's a lead that a pulmonologist can follow up on. It's probably no consolation to you, but at least you're still able to do what you love at a high level even if it's not the level that you hoped to be at.

I love all the good will and heart felt advice people give to Sage. Speaks to not only Sage but those who follow him. I think we realize how hard he works and how dedicated he has always been. Also, eventhough he has been dealt this less than optimal hand he is still fighting with very little complaints or feeling sorry for himself.

Glad I jumped on KZbin tonight and noticed you had this vlog up. I've cut back even more on screen time and my social platforms. You had a great reply to the person who posted an uninformed comment who implied that runners in the US at UTMB races are sheep 🤣 I don't like some of the things UTMB has done but it does good things too and hope it continue to learn and improve. You are so right about some of the US-based races and the ridiculous lottery systems - total B.S. Always sending you and your pulmunary system :) positive vibes and hoping those hills get easier! Very best of luck at UTMB - I'll be binging the livestream/live tracking and cheering you on.

I have the exact same problem on hills and I was actually glad you shared that. I thought it was just me. I had a PE a while ago and trying to run uphill just slays me. Hills were never "my bread and butter", but I never suffered the way I do now. Keep up the good work and post if hills ever get easier. PS also plant based runner and still being treated for PE

Or it could be that you might be hunched over more - leaning into the hill - than you used to, which would mean your diaphragm and lungs can not expand as much. Thanks for the great videos.

Hey, which one of your training plans should I pick for Pikes Peak ascend? I'm around 3 hour marathon shape, I've done up to 60 miles I a training plan, and I've been running for 6 years.

I just had multiple lab tested VO2max tests less than 12-15 months ago and it was 44-47. The Vo2max certainly took a big hit! In my prime i was around 70. I'd actually be interested to see how my Running Economy is at different paces/inclines as that would tell me more. Tests are expensive!

I'm not big on calling people sheep, and runners are generally the last who would deserve that term... but when I see all those UTMB banners on a US course, there isn't much else I can think.
@Vo2maxProductions
@Vo2maxProductions 27 күн бұрын
I'm not sure what "being on a US course" has to do with being called a "sheep"? Call us "GOATs" maybe 🐐🏔😂?! UTMB (despite being "big and "corporate") does offer the opportunity for a lot of runners at all levels to take part in the sport of mountain-ultra-trail running. And I think that's an awesome thing. Certain (smaller and private) US ultras are way more gatekept and exclusionary/elitist with biased lotteries that take 5 -10 years to get into and are inherently discriminatory in that regard with less diversity. I think there is a certain irony in the sport where people like certain niches (if it fits their narrative or personal whims) but then feel strongly against entities and other factors in the every changing and every growing sport that go against that personal narrative (myself included). I'm interested in having the global ultra-trailrunning community be more "open and welcoming" with more diversity and opportunity. People assume "smaller and local" is always "better" but it comes down to a lot of factors with race sizes and demand/supply. Obviously i'm biased because most of my major sponsors are in line with UTMB and I've had great memories going to Chamonix at the end of the summer most years over the past decade. There are certainly a lot of "growing pains" and "inevitable change" in the sport, but in terms of being inclusive (having a fair and reasonable lottery with stones), more diverse, and providing more and more people with the opportunity around the world to experience this great sport, UTMB is certainly not "all bad".

Unfortunately, it is inevitable for any popular race to become more of a hassle to deal with. For hobby joggers like myself, local keep it simple races are definitely more enjoyable. Nothing against the trendy races, but I don't see them as being worth the hassle. Of course if you run professionally, that is a different story. Had a buddy that said he loved running the CCC, but would never do it again because of the qualification process. I get that it is a necessary evil to keep it from becoming a complete circus, similar to Boston or any other large race.
@Vo2maxProductions

@@markstreeter9920 ironically a lot of "small and local" US ultramarathon trail races are harder to get into than a UTMB series kind of race (like the Speedgoat 50km this year for example). There are many limits with permit sizes, restrictions, and super hard, "biased lotteries" for something like one of the most iconic mountain 100milers in Colorado near me in the summer (Hardrock). UTMB has done a ton to promote the sport imo for all levels of runners around the world and i think it creates more diversity and more opportunity in a lot of ways (especially with 25km, 50km and 100km event distances) for different runners. I see the ultra-trail community as a global/international community in need of more diversity. The lottery to get into UTMB is fair and transparent and based on merit and it doesn't take 5+-10 years to get into like other iconic US 100-milers. FYI I also love events like the Boston or NYC Marathon.

@Vo2maxProductions I consider speedgoat to be a trendy, popular race. Local races have smaller permits, but the demand is low, so no lottery needed. Not hating on trendy, popular races, they just aren't for me. When I say local, I'm referring to the races nobody knows about. Those are my kind of races. * EDIT * perhaps I shouldn't use "local", I should say "less popular".
