In this day and age cars like this Subaru BRZ tS, the Toyota GR 86 and the Mazda Miata are gifts to the sports car enthusiast. The fact that these sports cars have smaller, light weight engines that produce as much power as V8s in the past is not lost on me. In a world dominated by SUVs and car companies being pressured to electrify everything, these light weight, 6 speed manual pocket rockets are a breath of fresh air and I hope to own one one day. Again, great work MotorWeek.

I must be the only person that prefers Subaru/Toyota don't chase horsepower numbers. Keep it NA, simple, light-ish and relatively cheap, in the same spirit as classic sports cars or the Miata. Momentum cars are more fun than stomp the gas pedal to make up for poor cornering skills type cars.

@Andrew-zs5tc10 ай бұрын
Anthony, You are not alone. Most people who have driven a BRZ appreciate the advantage of lightweight for handling. Adding a turbo would change the nature of the car. Adding more power would likely require a taller engine which would mess up the center of gravity. A more powerful and heavier car would be far less fun to drive on real roads. It might win more stop light drag races and be better for top speed at a track but it would be less fun.

How fun is it to drive? How’s gas? Premium only? How slowly or fast does it burn. What’s the costs like for repairs and oil? It’s my dream car
@darksunrise877710 ай бұрын
@@szn1580If you live near fun roads (or do track or auto-x), it is amazing to drive. Just enough power from a responsive 7400 rpm NA engine paired with a lightweight, balanced chassis and RWD/LSD. As a former track instructor, it's the kind of chassis I'd recommend to students to grow and develop skills on - it offers the tools to teach you everything you need to know about driving fast and finding the limits. Gas is premium only. My average gas mileage is poor (high teens), but my driving is probably not representative. I've seen other owners baby their BRZ/GR86's and get 26-28 mpg. I do my own maintenance so I don't know dealer costs, but all the basic maintenance is easy other than spark plugs (also not hard, just more involved than on typical I4 engines due to flat-4 design). Oil is normal synthetic 0w20. Would recommend 5w30 for any serious driving (0.5q overfill if you track). If you have a good mechanic who works on Japanese cars, maintenance should be pretty cheap. Overall it's one of my favorite cars. Of cars I've owned and/or tracked, I'd put the 2nd gen BRZ in my top 5 (along with the s2000, e46m3, 987.2 Boxster S and 986 Boxster S).

Man I owned the first gen scion frs back when it first came out, and loved it! Man it was a fun car to enjoy driving. It wasn’t fast! But that didn’t matter to me, it was still quick enough for me, and handled like it was on rails! Boy I really miss the car now! The reason I got rid of it! Was at the time I was living in Chicago, and on the winter months I couldn’t drive it, it was to dangerous to travel to work and back home. The car didn’t have no weight, so every time I would shift a gear, I would end up sliding sideways and around in a circle! I almost killed my self in one of the occasions! And working one hour away was difficult for me to miss days from work! So I ended up trading it for a Jeep Wrangler after 2 years of ownership. And now that I’m retired and living it Arizona, I wish I have it here! So I love what Toyota and Subaru are doing with both of this car’s. Keeping it fun and somewhat affordable to buy!
