The 2024 Subaru Impreza RS Previews The Return Of A WRX Hatchback

The #SubaruImpreza has always been the base line for the high-performance WRX and for 2024, the sporty #ImprezaRS trim returns with more power and a design that wouldn’t look out of place wearing a #WRX badge. This marks the return of the larger 2.5L F4 engine in the #Impreza family and it should attract budget shoppers looking for AWD in a small car.

A very thorough review, I've heard the brakes are sensitive, slam the brakes and your through the windshield. But for Canadians this car is appealing especially on price. In the winter real AWD on a small car is a life saver, cloth heated seats are what you want in the winter, the aerodynamics, weight and gas mileage are much better than an SUV. The visiblity is much better than a Prius Prime PHEV, which starts at $50,000 CAD, $5,000 dealer add-on, 2 year wait, front wheel drive only, no rear wiper, disfunctional dash and requires you install a type 2 charger at your home. Notice the $5000 federal government rebate for the PHEV is suckedup by the dealship. Eh if you can afford a Prius Phev you can afford another charger at work, yeah yeah.

I will say, I have to give Subaru credit for just improving their vehicles over time. They really focused on quality and while nothing super mind blowing, it's a night and day difference compared to a lot of their older cars. They still keep it simple in this Impreza without any crazy tech, so people can still use this very easily, and the fact that it comes standard with AWD is a big plus, not many compact sedans offer this as standard, so good on Subaru for doing that, their Symmetrical AWD system is pretty good. And of course, I personally enjoy the deep, bassy sound of that classic Subaru flat 4 engine. Sounds really cool. The only real complaint is that the Subaru Starlink system isn't the quickest, so I think Subaru really needs to improve the software to something much faster.

No leather seats, cooled seats, heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, rear air vents, full stop and go adaptive cruise, auto hold, navigation and many others. You can get all these features for $5k less in other cars.
@KeithSchwerin

The RS name is there but the RS spirit isn't. All they really had to do was bump the 2.5 to about 200HP, and give it a 6spd and it would have been a pretty solid revival for the badge. Fun and sensible. Instead it's just an AWD Nisan Altima with a hatch.

I have to agree with you. As both a mazda 3 and impreza owner (wife) in my opinion the 3 is leaps and bounds a nicer car and mazda is willing to deal whereas Subaru at least around here has a take it or leave it attitude. The awd in my 3 is just as good or better than the impreza also. My wifes impreza also ate the cvt trans at less than 50k miles but to be fair Subaru was amazing to deal with and gave us a loaner for the duration of the trans replacement, which was about two months.

Just want to say that as far as fuel economy goes, Subarus improve vastly as they break in. I have a 21 Outback Touring XT, and when I first got it the MPG was terrible. Could only get about 24-25 mpg while using some hypermiling techniques. Others in my family were only averaging about 20 when they drove it. After 8k miles, it increased to roughly 28-29 mpg. Then at 12k it increased to 32+. I now average between 32 and 34 mpg a tank. Granted I also did a lot of testing to learn some of its quirks to get better results over time. I see no reason why you couldn't average close to 40 mpg in the Impreza after break-in.

This car desperately needs the BRZ's version of the 2.4 with 220HP. If they had made an AWD Hatch with 200+ HP to compete against Civic Si and Golf GTI, it would sell like hotcakes. Imagine another revvy, N/A 4 cylinder sport compact with AWD and a manual transmission. Hell, you can even name it the "Impreza 2.4GT" as a tribute to the old Impreza 2.5GT that came with the old WRX engine and 224HP when the 2009 WRX got upped to 265. That would've been perfect, as the new N/A 2.4 could make around 220HP just like the old 2.5GT did. That's what people want (or better yet, a full-on WRX Hatch). But Subaru continuously denies the plethora of hot hatch lovers for some mysterious reason.

Honestly i'd prefer more true RS. Give this a power bump to more like 200HP from its 2.5L, a 6spd and suspension borrowed from the WRX and it could be a GREAT car. But as it is the RS and now the TR are just shadows of themselves. Also, technically the TS was the wagon, not the RS, so really this is more of a TS revival.

Looks like a Mazda3. Silly it lacks a manual option. Interior looks alright but I think the huge portrait style head unit is ridiculous.

What are you smoking or being high on yall? tell me the name of the decent small suvs that are sold for less than 30k today The new CX-5 is around 40k+, ridiculously expensive Also not everyone want to drive big ass cars such as the CX-5, so the impreza would be ideal for some people

yeah looks better visually but the lack of any real "hot" engine makes it a deal breaker, but i suppose if all u want is a lukewarm hatch it'll work i guess.

As an owner of 2 subarus, be on the lookout for oil leaks and you will not get the epa gas mileage if you drive a lot of in town driving. My legacy 3.6 epa is 18/25 city/highway respectfully. On the highway i was able to get 27mpg closer to when its new but now i get 23mpg average at 25%city 75% highway. When i lived 10 miles from work i was only getting 19mpg and that was with driving about 80%city.

Nice, but $32k seems steep for 182 hp. But it is kind of a niche vehicle being an awd hatch/wagon.
@97I30T
@97I30T 10 ай бұрын
That's the world we live in right now, sadly. $32k isn't nearly as much today as it used to be. The Civic and Mazda 3 hatchbacks aren't any cheaper and have nearly the same amount of power at the same price. The Corolla hatchback is cheaper, but it's also down a wee bit on power.
