Year and a half ago bought a WRX premium for just under $32K. The jittery ride and peaky motor of the old WRX were gone, heated seats, linear throttle response sold me. But I'm 73, no longer a boy racer, just an old guy who appreciates decent handling, enough power, and a manual.
@Soh909 ай бұрын
Yeah I actually LIKE the WRX. I even like how it looks. And the icing on the cake is that you can actually buy a WRX for below sticker. I recently saw one that was running on slightly lower ride height (about .5 - 1.0" all around) and a custom quad exhaust and it looked fantastic. Don't get me wrong, I love the GR Corolla and if up to me, I'd take a GR Corolla Circuit just out of sheer charm, but the WRX still has a place here!

@myredpyramidthing it is a nice vehicle. It's just that in Canada the base is $50k, while I paid $39k for my wrx limited. Off the lot, it is the best car I’ve ever driven, I feel so connected to the car and the road. I couldn’t be happier and will never ever sell it. I knew it was gonna be good but really had no idea it just how good it is! Also, it’s my first Toyota and after only 5 days, I’m a loyalist! I had a Lexus RCF for almost 9 years, highly modded with high end coilovers and bolt ons, it wasn’t a slouch by any means. Then I saw the Toyota GR up close and personal (the owner gave me a full tour). I couldn’t get it off my mind, literally 4 days later I was trading my Lexus for the GR Corolla circuit edition. Driving it has me all smiles, and the car from every single angle is gorgeous. I often find myself going to the garage just to admire it. The car is such a thrill to drive so nimble and light footed with an eagerness to be driven. The GR Corolla is the first car I have owned right out the box that has me quite satisfied. With my Lexus and previous Mercedes AMG there was always something I felt they lacked from factory and hence all the mods l would do to the cars. With the GR it’s so perfect, I’m just so satisfied with it stock. Can’t wait for the break in period to be over so I can extract the most out of that engine. I totally agree with everything you said about your experience, truly a phenomenal car! All those who say it’s just a Corolla are totally clueless, even the interior is very agreeable to me. I'm really nostalgic for cars that have spartan, low-rent interiors. Cheap, low quality interiors give me a better feeling like I can USE the car. There's a charm to vehicles that do the dynamics part inherently well, but leave the interior space to the driver to be as tidy or as messy, as cared for or lived in, as they choose to make it. If I were well off and young in 2004, I would have bought an Impreza STi. If I were young today, I'd have that Corolla. They exist in the same space for me, personally.

So I bought the WRX back in October 2022 after putting in a deposit for a GR86. Toyota kept delaying delivery so I decided with winter approaching to go with the WRX instead. My girlfriend was also pleased I went from a "4" seater coupe to a 5 seater sedan. The GTC was basically unobtanium here in my part of Canada. I have yet to actually see one in person. The WRX is exactly what you guys said, a more compliant, family friendly sports car. It's awesome, does exactly what I need it to do. I can fit things in it without issue, haul people, while also taking it on the backroads, dirt roads and have a blast in the winter. Yeah it's a little ugly, but whatever, it's quirky IMO.

@ToyotaUSA. @Everydaydriver @Subaru Nice review, thanks. I wish Toyota had the same post-sales and customer service as Subaru. My wrx series white was with me for 133k and was entirely serviced by Subaru dealers. Now, I own a GRC 23. In less than 25k miles my 4 tires became uneven. The brakes don’t respond, at first pedal action, during pouring. And my front rotors are warped, with an estimated replacement cost of $2.7K dollars. Too many issues for a new car. BTW, is this car made in China?😂

Owned a 2007 WRX TR for many years - did a lot of stuff to it, and it was always fun to drive and hoon around in. The bigger turbo (that I installed) and the hit from the boost threshold was so fun! Very theatrical. Test drove a '23 WRX and it's completely lost all its charm and character. It feels far more like an old Volvo; no drama, no fun, not really good at much. Just a comfortable daily driver. Ended up test driving a '23 GR86 and buying it on the spot.

I traded in my 2014 WRX (the last of the hatchbacks) for a 2023 WRX. I was interested in looking at the GR Corolla but, at the time, I couldn't even find one to test drive. And the Toyota dealers were asking $10k over MSRP. I got my 2023 WRX for a bit under MSRP. Compared to my 2014 WRX, the 2023 WRX has a better suspension, better power delivery, a better shifter (I got the short-throw), and a more comfortable interior. A year on, I have no regrets buying my 2023 WRX.

that's not what they're talking about, they're talking about the poor handling, even with coilovers on my wife's new VB it handles poorly and that's because it's running Forester and Crosstrek open front diff and open rear diff drivetrain. Subaru really needs to bring back optional STI package that it did in previous models that way we could get front LSD, center DCCD diff, and rear LSD and compete against GR Corolla and Civic Type R.

My problem with the new vehicles and the wrx is major proof is those massive screens that just ruin the interior appeal, the GRC screen is more managable but I do wish it was flush instead of the bump, as for driving the wrx just doesn't feel right to drive anymore, like it feels off compared to previous generations, whereas the GRC just feels like the older wrx used to be

Saw a circuit edition Corolla today and I'd probably trade my WRX for one. A hatchback s just so much more practical, and the GR has a way better designed interior instead of the stupid massive screen that is in the new Subarus. I absolutely HATE the body cladding on the WRX and would have to factor in replacements from Aeroflow dynamics into my purchase price.

I love my GR Corolla and mostly drive with the rear seats folded flat; in the last few days, I've carried a six foot Willow tree, a five-foot tall and quite large roll of steel fencing and stakes. At 6'6", I'm snug; the seat could go lower (and have a longer seat), the pedals should engage closer to the fire wall, and the steering wheel should telescope further... ...or, my tall ass is too big for this thing lol! Amazing car though, undeniably!

I drove both and felt claustrophobia in the GR. Also, no adults can ever ride in the back. Can't take skis on your trip either. In Montana, this was a no brainer. The WRX is a much better all around car, and can easily accept mods to beat the GR in an autocross or rallycross event.

@panderalexander9 ай бұрын
well the reason Elantra N did better than WRX is because it comes standard with LSD. New WRX has no option for LSD, it only runs open front diff and open rear diff drivetrain from Forester and Crosstrek.

One thing about the WRX, that's basically the de-tuned power and torque. That should mean that it's drastically understressed and will last a long time... or some enterprising tuners could milk it out hard.

one HUGE difference is the tunability of these cars, I feel like and this is just my opinion, but i feel like the GR Corolla is already stretching to make 300hp froma 1.6l 3 cyl engine. whereas the WRX has a big 2.4l 4 cyl. I think the WRX has more overhead especially when you start adding downpipes and turbo upgrades. but, there goes your reliability. so its all about what you want and how much youre willing to spend to get it. I just got the base WRX and im loving it. I'm sure i would love the GR corolla more but i cant afford it. gg
@TheDrNinjaman5 ай бұрын
This is a common misconception. Toyota did their homework and put the all the money into the powertrain on this car. 1.6l triple sounds small, but it is built for power. One fewer piston means that the ones you do have can be built stronger for the same price. As is the transmission. I've heard of tuners getting 750hp out of this new motor already. I had 04 WRX that I put a stage 2 kit and tune on and reading over the forums, you have to do a lot of supporting mods to the driveline to go to really big power in the WRX. Obviously, time will tell, but for myself, more power just means more frequent trips to the pump. 300hp is just perfect for me in this size of car. Plenty quick and I love that it gets 30mpg on the highway and anytime I can keep my right foot under control. And the brakes! The GR is such a driver's car right out of the box. Everything I had made my WRX into by the end, but with a factory warranty and way better fuel economy.

Why aren’t there more hatchbacks offered? Are they afraid they’ll leach away sales from suvs? Bring back the hatchback/wagon Subaru, focus, A4, Jetta etc…Not everyone wants a huge suv or cuv. What about those who want a car that fits in their garage, has decent mpg , and doesn’t cost an arm/leg in insurance. Offer them in turbo or hybrid variants with AUTO or “E-CVT. Bring back the affordable fun car!

@mihan56609 ай бұрын
Bc cuvs are more profitable in the US. they cost about the same to make, but are differientiated enough to sell for several thousand more, which is pure profit. Like the corolla cross
@AndelaPandela9 ай бұрын
Hatchbacks get *slightly* worse mpg than sedans, so I've always imagined that's the reason some manufacturers avoid making them. For example, the current Mazda3 sedans get better MPG than the hatchbacks, despite both looking pretty sleek.
@mihan56609 ай бұрын
@@AndelaPandela for sporty vehicles, like the wrx, compared to sedans, hatchbacks also tend to get a bit worse lap times than the same car as a coupe or sedan. C&d blamed the hatchback setup for the 2008 sti's dismal result on the lightning lap. When they tested the 2019 jetta gli, they noted it had also beat the last (2015) golf r they had tested, despite the golf r being the much more powerful, performance car of the brand.

What a well thought out review. WRX hits the spot for me. I have a motorcycle to that is more fun than any car (and way less expensive too) I've owned, so the additional fun-factor of the GRC doesn't tip the scales in its favor for me. The WRX as a 4 season vehicle and the added trunk space and fold down seats is better for camping and great for transporting bicycles and canoes, and the stick shift and power make it more than enough. It will look and function better with a roof rack than the GRC. Hopefully the added plastic (which I think looks OK) means less corrosion and a longer lasting body. The big vertically oriented screen fits nicely into the design and I surprise myself a bit saying that since I hate screens in cars.

I loved my '05 STI, but I can't help but feel like Subaru has lost its way. The TR and GT are around STI prices but without any of the things people want from an STI. Just did a few hours of hard driving in the Gr premium and a Subi TR. So much so we had to refuel both. Definitely the Gr noticeably has more power and has a much more fun rev happy engine with a great shifter. However it’s loud, the interior is cheap, the seats are just only okay plus they place you in a more truck or SUV like orientation which feels like you are sitting on top of the car instead of inside and the rough ride quality as a daily comes into question. Plus that rev happy engine seams to always need to have the RPMs up high even though it has more torque than the WRX. Fuel economy is not great. The WRX TR has more room everywhere, better ride quality, is just plain easy to drive and has a better ability to handle bad bumpy road surfaces more comfortable seats, more options, nicer cabin and it’s materials. Both have their strong points and weak points. Bottom line is the GR is a better track car and the TR is better at everything else. If you want cheaper insurance, better ride quality and comfort, more room, utility, MPG, etc. the choice is obvious.
