Looking at the clothing I made in 2021, I see that my 18th century fixation did indeed continue 😁
I made a lot more special occasion items than I had planned, and while it was fun, that will need to change in 2022. I need basics.
Dang. I forgot I made a bumroll. I guess that makes 22 😁
Also my grammar is really bad in this one. I definitely said "blowed around". I blame covid 🙃

I would definitely recommend learning how to knit and/or crochet. It is so useful and fun! Also, I started crocheting a lot more this year, and I found that it was much quicker and less intimidating than I had initially thought.

I'm so relieved to see I'm not the only one who didn't get good results with the Bootstrap dress form. I saw so many videos raving about it, I felt like a terrible sewing failure for how horribly mine turned out!

I have the same irrational loathing of knitting needles as I have too many memories from my childhood of dropped stitches on half made scarf projects 😂 Crochet on the other hand feels like a completely different craft and skill. Projects come together very quickly and you only ever have to deal with a single stitch at a time, wiggle a single stick around and ta-da! you have a cardigan etc

Since you have a serger, you can totally make cardigans and sweaters without being able to knit. All it takes is the right patterns and some nice, cozy sweater knit fabrics.

I find crochet easier than knitting. Tunesian/Afghan crochet can give you the look of kniting but is much easier.

I always enjoy how your analytical mind works. As one who is always being accused of being too self-critical, I love to hear someone else who really breaks down the pros and cons! Folks, it doesn't mean we hate the item (usually) just that we want to see the whole picture. I love the 18th century history bounding dress, the silk blouse, and the Christmas dress outfit. But I definitely agree that daily wear should be easier. I'm disappointed myself in the "summer vacation" tops. At least they worked for that specific purpose. And you learned what will make them better. I loved that video, and contemplate a version for myself, maybe... You learned one of the most important things about wirking with stretch fabric: check the amount of stretch. (And don't forget to check it both ways--some knits really stretch and can sag up and down.) Is there any way you could make your neck a little bigger on that sweater? It looked very nice on you.

ME TOO; super critical. But it means that whatever we produce is of a very high standard, or we will say that it is not! I wouldn't change this for anything. (It is simply not easy to lie with ourselves... but age helps!)

For the jacket you didn’t like, perhaps you could draft a historical sleeve and armscythe so that when you raise your arm, the entire jacket bodice doesn’t ride up as well. (Or you could add an underarm gusset.)

This was what I came to say, I think Bernadette has a good section about this when she talks about the Hamilton costumes, how Broadway costumers make garments that are heavily shaped but also allow a full range of motion without having to be rearranged every time you move. I have a to do item to experiment with adding arm gussets into RTW/off the shelf clothing that I already have but don't wear because of the fit.

I agree, it is definitely inspiring the way she has it all planned out and has a plan to finish it in 2 years. With how detailed it is and all the rest of the projects she is doing, inspiring all the way. It is always hard to start, I had to start with something like a circle skirt, using a circle skirt calculator online, or a simple skirt from a pattern. It helped to get started, then after a couple of projects under your belt you can add something a little more complicated. Remember it is always ok to set a project aside and reevaluate it. You got this!

A possible fix for your pumpkin jacket might be adding a 3-4" skirt to it. nothing too fancy but I think a scalloped slightly flared skirt at the bottom would take care of the "I hate that it hikes up" factor and would flatter your figure. Theories are great but they all need adjustment in practice. the collar is another problem where theory falls down, though fixing it is the bigger challenge due to the fitted nature of it and I don't know if it's worth the hassle. I love that you made a plan and stuck with it, though! I have such a hard time with this myself finding someone who can do it, gives me hope for the future!

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I, for one, am amazed at your productivity. It should get easier because you’ve “worked out the glitches” in your patterns. Allow extra fabric at the waistline, you can take it in but once you’ve cut it you’re stuck with it. Also, the Same with the length! Add 3 inches. Then you can adjust to what pleases you. You can always gusset under the arm to allow more room. Redo the sleeve on the Christmas plaid to a wrist length with maybe a bit of puff at the top. Then you can wear with out a sweater… or wear with long fingerless gloves. It would look amazing. 💖💖💖💖💖You can do it!!! You’re brilliant!!✨⚡️💫🌟✨⚡️💫🌟Happy New Year!!!

Your hair is absolutely breath-taking in this video!! Now, at the risk of seeming insincere with the compliment I just made... a hat from the Vogue 9044 pattern would go quite nicely with your turtle neck. It's option C at the bottom right on the pattern cover if you want to look it up. The hat and turtle neck would go well together. But visualized with this hairstyle... wow! Best of luck with your projects this year. I'm a new subscriber and look forward to your historically-inspired creations in 2022.

This is terrible for sensory issues but wear the turtle neck for a few minutes and then lay flat to dry. Do that a few times and it will fit a little better. I like turtle neck shirts but I have broad shoulders so the neck is always a little tight at the seam.

Knitting's great, and I highly recommend it--you can customize sweaters and socks to your body and it's awesome. But if you don't have time for that, sweater knit fabrics are available from quite a few fabric stores and online vendors so you can sew a sweater. You just won't have as much customizable choice as you would if you were knitting your own sweater since color, fiber content, and texture will be dependent on available fabric.

Looking at the jacket and red plaid dress, it looks like one of the fit issues you're having (most notable on the jacket) is that the armholes aren't fitted tight enough. It sounds like you need to bet a bunch of calico/muslin and absolutely nail your block.

Re: Pumpkin Jacket: Could you perhaps convert it to a vest? Possibly with an extension/peplum cleverly pieced together from the sleeves and/or scraps? *Shrug* My two cents. Shirtdresses: Oh, wow! I recently decided to add skirts/extensions to my blouses for the same reason you mentioned--the weight of the skirt keeping the bodice from riding up over the outer skirt and creating the dreaded "muffin-waist." XD Proof that great minds think alike. ;-) Feel better, and happy sewing!

You had a very productive year. I love seeing the depths of your collection. And good note about the pointed bodice. I've been tempted to make some myself but as someone who sits down in a wheelchair a lot, I can see how it will not be flattering. Also you are absolutely correct that anyone with a short torso who makes a garment to end at the waist line ends up looking like a crop top. The only way I have found that works for me is if I include it in a dress with a wide skirt.

For the knit turtleneck take the zipper down below the collar and add buttons with thread loops. It looks nice and you can add a small amount if space. I love everything you made but my favorite is the jumper. Its just so practical and I love it. I have been thinking of making myself on too. In wool probably, but its spring now and time for the garden l. #homesteader

I think you could easy learn to knit. If you start to learn garter and stocking stitch with a basic rib ( you will have the basic for colour work) Look for patterns that are seamless and knit on circle needles. This is a better learning process of which cuts out Garment construction/ less seaming. also to learn on a child garment this uses less wool and faster than an adult size. You can iron out you mistakes before tackling a larger size it is will be like as sample piece and future reference. It will also work out you unique individual tension. I honestly think you'll enjoy the investigation of different grade weights of wool and how you can manipulate once you got this skill under your belt. I would be totally interested in your journey and I'm sure those going down the textile road will too! 😉

Oh no, illness. : ( I got covid post-Christmas too and my voice is still a bit wonky...at least in my head because of congestion. Hope you continue to feel better! I had a similar experience with my bootstrap dress form - hoping it would allow for draping and finding it nowhere near accurate enough for that. I did not have any kind of dress form before though, so it is nice to now have something I can put my projects on and futz with the look and feel of things (like pleating on skirts) even if I cannot trust it for fit adjustments. I think I prefer it to buying a "standard size" form just for body image reasons. It has not been useful for hemming though. The distribution of mass between it and myself for the butt, hip and upper thighs region is pretty far off (I'm very, very pear shaped), so I still have to put on my skirts and do my best with a puffing chalk maker. I couple that with putting my phone near the floor and recording a video of myself rotating next to the chalk marker stand, so I can get a feel for if my hem markings are level, or if I need to adjust my markings some.

with the Pumpkin Jacket, is it possible to remove the arms and turn it into a waistcoat? I've found, with my own fit issues, that a lot of long-sleeve items that "should fit" (based on bust measurements, waist measurements) but that don't, suddenly do once I remove the sleeves. You could use the sleeve fabric then to create some kind of matching decoration to cover or obscure the bust darts? I don't know, I haven't finished my morning coffee yet, but I've been buying a lot of second-hand dresses lately and then taking the sleeves off.

Instead of a belt I prefer putting elastic in the waist band instead of a belt. I did it with jeans and a pair if shorts that were a size or two big in the waist. If the elastic is run threw most of the waist it doesn't really look like it even had elastic but I used non roll elastic in the jeans. So maybe use higher quality elastic. It's much more comfortable than a fitted waist but it might still have to have fastners with a stiffer or fabric without lycra. It seems most jeans are slightly stretchy anymore so I could get away with leaving them fastened when I took them off.

honestly, the biggest issue with the pumpkin jacket might just have been the fabric being to bulky for such a petite presenting person. the original was imho using a much crisper (thinner) wool. and the 1 dart made the dar so much more visible that it should have. I also would suggest smaller buttons for you. the models are all VERY tall (and thin obviously) so to keep those lines in proportion you may need to make everything a BIT "thinner/smaller" - again - just imho (love your content)
