2G shut off back in 2018 here in Australia. My carrier shut of 3G at the beginning of February this year and it truly is sad to see. It's depressing to see phones that once dominated the market, now not even being able to connect to a carrier network anymore.

This is very sad, as I've used 2G not too long ago in areas of Missouri where not even 4G is able to reach. I'm willing to support 5g, but not until i can get coverage that i can rely on... That was once 3g here... It would just work, and I'd always be connected to get the minimum i need for an emergency calling and texting. If AM radio can stay, then 2G should too.
@PhilAndOr

The reason you get trusty old 3g always reliable in remote areas, while 4g not so much, is because network operators don't bother investing in expensive equipment upgrades in areas with no users. If the regulators force them to commit to switching off the 3g network however, then the operators are forced to make those investments. In theory, 4g should be a strict upgrade over 3g operating on the same frequencies.

3G phones can fallback on 2G, but not the other way around. Also, 2G requires significantly less bandwidth than 3G. Lastly, millions of IOT devices, and M2M connections rely on 2G. GSM is cheap, simple, easy, and is usually sufficient for basic communication.

Spotify, internet researching and texting is already with classic EDGE no problem at all.

@@aavvironalex The range of the signal is a function of the frequency it is transmitted at, it's not a special property of 2g that is has longer range than 3g or anything. If you transmit both LTE-A and 2g at 1800 MHz, the 4g one should have the same range or better and be significantly faster due to improved protocol, signal processing, hardware etc. the combined developments of 30+ years since 2g was introduced. The main reason 2g/3g are still going strong in remote areas is because network operators don't bother to invest in upgrading their equipment in areas with few users. In Russia, likely they will be using 2g+3g for many, many years to come, because they're too busy spending all their oil dollars on missiles to bomb their neighbour and not investing in national infrastructure - especially in remote regions.

@@ExperiencersInternational I'm on Rogers. Depending on the source, 2G is either long gone or will be shut down at some date in the future. A friend, who is with a different company, was given a free 4G phone when his company shut down 2G. Rogers has definitely shut down 2G & 3G on 1.9 GHz and will be killing 3G entirely on July 31. Rogers has both 3.5 & 3.7 GHz blocks in C band, so I could be on either. One fun fact, when there was that scare about C band interfering with altimeters, the government issued a map showing areas where there were restrictions on C band use near airports. I live near the biggest airport in the country and just a couple of blocks from one of those areas. However, that problem has since been resolved, so I guess those maps no longer apply.

When you run out of high speed data in a data plan, your phone does slow down to 2G speeds, but it does NOT actually connect to the 2G network. If you ever use up all your data, you’ll notice that you’ll still most likely have “LTE” or “5G” next to your signal bars. If it connects to 2G, you’ll see either “2G”, “G”, (which stands for GPRS), E, (which stands for EDGE), or, if by some miracle you are near a working CDMA tower, you’ll see 1X, (short for 1xRTT). They actually don't call it the iPhone 4G. It's the iPhone 4. The 2G and 3G got their names because of the networks they can connect to, while the iPhone 4 got its name because it was the 4th iPhone.
@EriksenElias
@EriksenElias 6 күн бұрын
I know that. But a lot of people didn’t know, because the media kept referring to it as the 4th generation iPhone (and rightfully so). Eventually they started shortening it to 4G, which caused the confusion.

Hell no :D Here in Czechia the providers have to specifically support your phone for VoLTE to work (unlike in the USA, you dont have to rely on providers to buy phones .. electronic stores sell them just like any other appliance .. you dont even have to go to a store that only carries a certain brand.. normal electronic stores sell a whole variety ... if 2G goes away you could end up with a brand new phone that cant make or receive calls in this country.

Maybe really old phones, but even then, not likely. The cellular MODEM is often tied to the rest of the phone’s logic board, so adding one in isn’t so easy. Lately people have been using software defined radios to make small cellular base stations that their phones can connect to. The good thing about those is that you can program them to work on almost any cellular frequency and mimic any carrier. Sadly, CDMA base stations are still not really available because Qualcomm controls the use of CDMA technology very tightly. AMPS, GSM, UMTS, and even LTE are totally doable though.

Here in Brazil we’re soon going to be loosing our 3G network, making a lot of devices either useless or unusable for phone calls, also I think we don’t have 2G anymore, but l’ll have to check. The reason why a lot of devices won’t support phone calls is because our network providers don’t have voLTE.
