The reason you get trusty old 3g always reliable in remote areas, while 4g not so much, is because network operators don't bother investing in expensive equipment upgrades in areas with no users. If the regulators force them to commit to switching off the 3g network however, then the operators are forced to make those investments. @@aavvironalex The range of the signal is a function of the frequency it is transmitted at, it's not a special property of 2g that is has longer range than 3g or anything. If you transmit both LTE-A and 2g at 1800 MHz, the 4g one should have the same range or better and be significantly faster due to improved protocol, signal processing, hardware etc. the combined developments of 30+ years since 2g was introduced. The main reason 2g/3g are still going strong in remote areas is because network operators don't bother to invest in upgrading their equipment in areas with few users. If it connects to 2G, you’ll see either “2G”, “G”, (which stands for GPRS), E, (which stands for EDGE), or, if by some miracle you are near a working CDMA tower, you’ll see 1X, (short for 1xRTT). ik some people will add 4g capability to these older phones
@93Volvo2409 ай бұрын
Maybe really old phones, but even then, not likely. The cellular MODEM is often tied to the rest of the phone’s logic board, so adding one in isn’t so easy. Lately people have been using software defined radios to make small cellular base stations that their phones can connect to. The good thing about those is that you can program them to work on almost any cellular frequency and mimic any carrier. Sadly, CDMA base stations are still not really available because Qualcomm controls the use of CDMA technology very tightly. AMPS, GSM, UMTS, and even LTE are totally doable though.

Here in Brazil we’re soon going to be loosing our 3G network, making a lot of devices either useless or unusable for phone calls, also I think we don’t have 2G anymore, but l’ll have to check. The reason why a lot of devices won’t support phone calls is because our network providers don’t have voLTE.
