Attended an under 17s game in Kilkenny in April. It was fantastic, family and community fun, just brilliant. Then I found a hurley artisan and he gave me a tour of his workshop and then we had tea in his kitchen. Lovely man, Willy Bulfin.

Hurling is related to the Scottish game, Cammanachd, or Shinty. Shinty is related to Golf, and the only international game Hurling has (as far as I’m aware (I’m open for correction)) is the Irish v Scottish Glenmorangie cup, played over two games, over two years.

when the scottish and irish immigrants in canada saw the first nations playing lacrosse i'm sure they could immediately identify. lacrosse is the oldest sport in north america and the first national sport of canada, hockey being the second. hockey began in nova scotia and was formalized into the modern game in montreal like lacrosse had been previously. check out lacrosse, both field and box, if you haven't before and you'll see the similarities with hurling and shinty.

Really enjoyed this one Davy.. these videos of the past live again in your hands.. Sad to hear that hurling is dying out in Irish schools.. 😭💔wish there was a way to change that.. Saw a comment about comparing this with field jockey in Canada .. there is no comparison.. Yes we played field hockey in Canada.. but there was a coach who knew hurling and taught some lads who were interested.. he did this on his own time because it was banned in school.. wanted them to know history of the game.. Thank you for this one Davy.. as always excellent work on a topic many know not much about💜💙☘️

The new GGA President Jarlath Burns, in his Inauguration Speech, stated that the promotion of Hurling will be no. 1 on his presidential agenda. So this focus will be shifted to widening the playing presence and numbers of players.

I had a wonderful conversation with a solicitor who was heavily involved in GAA sports as I was with football (soccer). We both bemoaned the lack of young talent following through beyond their mid teens. We all know the answer, as most of us suffered the same problems ourselves.

Played it as a young teen in the late 60's early 70's in south Dublin. My interest declined as I did't see it, and the GAA, as very dynamic and modern, and I moved away from playing sport in general. Stupid of me I know.

It’s nothing like field hockey. At all.. its about twice the length and width and you actually have to hit the ball over half that distance high into the air at pin point accuracy. Plus more differences. It’s nothing like it
@Joseph13163
@Joseph13163 Ай бұрын
Completely different much of the footage you see here is from earlier times when the game was more ground based,but now its very different a lot more handling and aerial play.The rules are much the same but the sticks were more suited to ground play back then.
