Someone recently asked me about gun cleaning and at that moment I realized how complicated the topic of cleaning a firearm has become. So in this video I tried to simplify the topic of cleaning to make easier for the average shooting enthusiast to understand.

It should give most people a warm fuzzy feeling just to look at, hold, and wipe down a gun. Thanks Tom

I’m doing a Tom River watch marathon tonight, lol. Thank you for this video. After watching approx 20 other rifle cleaning videos, I must admit it had my head spinning! I love how you bring common sense to the how and why in your 3 level cleaning techniques. Your experience with wisdom cuts through all confusing B.S. out there. So many treat it religiously as if rocket science. Previously after watching 20 or so cleaning videos I was looking for certain commonalities that seemed to prevail the most often, I then took this info as my way to go about the process. I must say your video makes the most sense to me as you dispel a-lot of the stuff that my gut told me was just B.S. Other stuff you said was directly in-line with what many of the other so called pros suggested. The most crazy thing I heard was how you must never use a clean rod without a bore guide. The thought to push from breach to muzzle and remove patch each time made sense as to push crap away from the action, so why need a bore guide? People talk about the bore guide keeping a brass rod from scratching the bore by keeping it centered in the bore. I must say I didn’t understand how a brass rod could ever scratch the harder surface of a steel barrel. The thought of using the bore guid did make sense to keep crap out of the action however. But as you mentioned, unless you are cleaning very often its hardly likely you’ll ever splatter enough solvent around to effect your wood bedding or action. So anyways, yes I ended up with the dewey one piece steel rod coated with nylon. Also picked up a nice brass jag set, as well as brass brushes with brass wire twisted spindles rather than steel ones. Thanks Tom for dispelling alot of the dues and don’t mythes of rifle cleaning. You did a great job of covering it all, I trust what you say because it makes the most logical sense to me my friend! God bless you Sir, thanks for another educational video my friend. ✌️😎👍

I would say; Level 1: Boresnake and a lite oil cleaning. Level 2: A good tear down, rod cleaning with solvent, and lite oil cleaning. Level 3: A complete rifle disassembly. Bolt, action, trigger, and barrel. Bore scope, JB bore Brite with Kroil. Solvent, followed up with a Quality CLP. Reassemble then test.

A little tip, if you've got a rifle with a chambering that shares the same size cartridge as a 30-06. A .410 bore mop works perfect for wiping out the chamber of the rifle.

My cleaning process usually doesn't change my ar15 and ak I generally clean after 1k rounds if I am using oil I apply more gear oil as needed. When I store a gun I use grease. I always enjoy these kind of videos. My hunting rifles are painted so only have to worry about the bore rusting. I love bore snakes to

KNIFE TIP: Get some “ rust erasers “. They are rubber in 3 different grits. I use them to strop my pocket knives. They get sharp in less than two minutes work. These things are simple, unbreakable and last for years. 11/2”x21/2”x5/8”.. slips in your pocket .

Tom what do you use to clean and preserve the wood. I want to keep the wood looking new on my model 70. Thank you

Herb I just wipe mine down with a slightly damp cloth (water) and then a dry micro fiber cloth or soft cotton. All of the stocks now are coated with basically a polyurethane coating over the wood so all you have to do is keep the grime off them and don't leave them in direct sun light. If a stock is really smugged from oil or something like that I'll use just a little vinegar diluted in water. Just make sure you don't wipe them down with oil. Oil tough on the wood.

I can agree with confusing. If you use the wrong solvents or oils, you can easily ruin a firearm. Like a medical Doctor, first do no harm.

The ever so controversial topic of how when why and what to do when your cleaning a rifle bore!! These gun cleaning supply company’s have everyone thinking you gota have 1000$ kit and roads and solvents to clean a bore. My hunting rifles never see copper solvent after the initial barrel brake in good ol hopps#9 and some rem oil my long range rifles clean to bare steel every 500 rounds totally different guns totally different expectations from both and one gets fired way way way more than just my hunting rifles
