One time someone asked me if I caught any fish and I said “not yet!” And he was an older gentleman teaching another father and his son how to fish and after asking he turned to them and said “that’s a true fisherman right there”

... Agree 100%. Sometimes it takes a little longer to put all of the pieces of the puzzle together. Nothing beats a positive mental attitude. One has to believe they are moving in the right direction assembling the puzzle. Sometimes taking a break, laying on the boat deck, stretching your back, looking at the sky, saying a little prayer, drinking and or eating something then get back to it. It has to, "feel right", to stay in an area. . Jeff .

I'm with you. I've been in that funk for 2 years now. Started getting in that funk at the end of the 2019 season, then covid hit and I was only on the water about 6 times in 2020. This year I was only out maybe 12 times and I've lost most of the progress I'd made.

Guess I'm one of your "hard core" viewers, Randy. I'm 74 & a bank angler. I don't do tournaments; only compete with the bass. For me fishing is entirely mental. Casting, lure selection, technique are all important aspects of the sport, but they all require thought! If your head's not in the game, why bother? If you don't think about every aspect of whatever you're doing, fishing or anything else, you're gonna suck at it!. So keep posting these "mental aspects" vids. Great job! Keep it up!

With all the information that’s out there these days, it’s enough to drive a guy crazy. However I do agree with you. I fished a brand new body of water for the first time, one day, last week. The water was 47 degrees and I felt they might be deep. The first 2 smallmouth came near the dam in about 31 feet of water. They came up almost white, they were so light. Left there and went to a series of main lake points and continued to fish in 25 to 30 feet of water. Caught a few more and my buddy stuck a good 3 lbs. smallie. Ended the day with about a 15 pound sack. Probably would have cashed a check on any Idaho lake that day. What made me happy about the whole day was the feeling I had, which ain’t rocket surgery, about the fish being deep and being close to the dam and rock. This is my 21st year as a bass fisherman and I live for it! It’s not my job only my passion. If I was a millionaire I would find a way to spend it all fishing. I subscribed to your channel due to 2 things. 1) your name recognition. 2). The title of your channel. It’s the mental game for me without that bass fishing would be way to boring.

I love the mental aspect of fishing Randy. and that you’re willing to discuss that side of angling. To me that is the real juice. I’d even say that the mental attitude goes with a spiritual aspect of fishing too. I love learning bait mods and fishing techniques, but I’m always striving to become a better angler. The mental process is The Challenge. I love learning about bass behavior and forage activity. I only compete with myself in fishing. To me, it’s similar to Poker or Martial Arts. It starts in the mind. I played poker a few years as a life choice. No regrets, learned much, and alright. The most helpful book that I read was “Zen and the Art of Poker”. It was about attitude and mindset, not playing specific hands. I view fishing the same way. It’s a Zen-like process for me. And I agree wholeheartedly about your beliefs in following one’s instincts. The key is being present and listening to your gut feelings. Thanks bro. Hope you continue discussing the important part of fishing.

Just two days ago I pulled up to my first spot, expecting action, but after about 20 minutes, I literally thought to myself "this just doesn't feel right, no idea why, but it's time to move", decided to quickly switch areas and started slamming em. Previously I would have been stubborn since the spot looked so good... There is TRUTH to what he is saying with trusting your intuition. Randy, I've only recently stumbled upon your great knowledge and I'm glad I did. Personally, I would rather only see videos that relate to the mental side of fishing (confidence, trust in yourself, etc..). There are tons of videos on the "magic bait", but the REAL magic is having confidence in what you are throwing.

Just a recently retired casual/recreational angler here who grew up on the SSE shore of Lake Erie 8 miles from the water & moved to Central Ohio 3 decades ago, but water is still 'in my blood' (I know blood is mostly water, just...you get the idea). I go out on the water for the peace & connection with Mother Nature (evolution/ancestry) & I usually fish cause it gives me something to do with my hands & helps to keep my mind on the setting & off all the rest of life & the world. I watch vids like yours because, if I'm going to fish, I'd like to catch a bit more than I typically do & bass are usually more fun to fight & land than most other species in the waters near where I now live. So no ambition to be or belief that I'll become a great, next level angler, but fully believe that all you said here still applies to my fishing success or failure. Always been a firm believer in following your instincts/intuition, though too often I'm wrapped up in intellect to recognize what my intuition is trying to tell me. One example of when I did listen & it paid off... One day this past August, I spent literally from dawn to noon fishing a variety of recommended baits, techniques, & locations without a sngle bite, was frustrated & doing some zig zag graphing while heading for the ramp when I noticed a tiny (4 boatlengths wide & 1 deep) half shaded cove with a piece of tackle stuck on the branch of a lay down. After salvaging the tackle, something told me to tie my boat to the branch (having lost my anchor that morning) & toss a nightcrawler & float rig in the shallows in hope of at leaat catching a brim before leaving. Spent the next 4 hours landing fish after fish. In all I lost 5 bluegill at the boat & caught 23 bluegill a 7 1/2 inch largemouth a 15 inch largemouth & a 17 inch catfish in that tiny cove on that simple rig. Then caught a 10 1/1 inch largemouth trolling back to the ramp with a Crappie jig. I've repeated that cove pattern with similar results & mix of species 4 more days on 2 separate lakes since then. And I try harder now to listen/feel more & overthink less. 😎

„Trust your instinct“ Seems like a no brainer but you’re bang on with it! so often people don’t though (myself included), presumably cos they’re afraid it might be the wrong decision. The paradox is, there’s no such thing as a wrong decision… EVERY decision you make is actively contributing to your experience and hence is optimising your intuition. The more you do it, the better you get at it. And in fact, this applies to everything in life. And to be honest it’s not something I’ve ever thought about like that… thanks Randy for making me stop and think about it! 😁

I agree totally with you, using all your senses is very overlooked. Noticing every little subtle change and being totally focused and in tune with the conditions at hand can mean the difference between weighing in a limit and not. I struggle with this when I have a negative co-angler on board. Sometimes I just want to throw them overboard and keep fishing. Great topic. As Randy says, "much appreciated!" God bless you Randy, I enjoy all your videos, and your humbleness.

Over the years I have taught myself 48 different bass fishing techniques, and at least once a month, someone comes up with a variation of a basic style, which I call a 1.1, 1.2 etc. We all have weaknesses, and those are the ones I try to force myself to use, sometimes fishing with nothing else in the boat. When I fished back in the 90’s I discovered a “zone” (in my head) and started to think like a bass, in other words, where would I be, in this or that situation. I won two local tournaments back to back, but lost the “zone” on the next tournament and I have yet to find it again….. I credit reading the master Rick Clunn articles, that got me to that magical place. I want to find it again, and I think it will happen again this year…. Great video once again Randy, you are keeping us all on our toes…….

The esoteric aspects of fishing are the most daunting. Americans generally have been wanting to be spoon-fed from our media, since the age of radio, through movies, then television, now the internet. Every "improvement" has made learning easier, and consequently, made us more intellectually "lazy" so to speak. Personally, I enjoy your more philosophical discussions on the sport as much as the nuts and bolts stuff.

Really well said and it is so true! Took me years to realize that I needed to trust my instincts! When I find myself just casting as you mentioned...I now force myself to do a mental reset. A sort of fish the moment... moment. Most of the time I begin by searching my feelings about what I'm doing at that moment. Typically the missing ingredient is confidence in what I'm attempting to accomplish. I then make a change that makes me feel more confident about being successful.

Randy This is why 95% of the time I fish alone despite my wife's objections. So many people I take talk non stop and after over hours ask how much longer are we going to fish. When I say until dusk they come up with something they have to do. I have had countless trips that I blanked until 8-9 hours then slammed then for 2 or 3 hours. I love inclement weather tournaments. Most fisherman aren't full equipped to stand the rain, wind, cold etc. They are defeated before they leave the dock.

Angling is more art than science. Understanding Bass behavior is everything. As far as baits and techniques there are a lot of redundancy. I have a good friend that’s an excellent angler and real lure junky. Until he out fishes me with something new I don’t try anything new. We both also build baits and rods. The latest “New” lures and techniques we have come up with recently have been refinement in Jig, Buzzbait and Rod design.

Focusing on the mental aspects of fishing and the "zone" I don't know if he would be willing or not but I do know it would be something he loves discussing and would be absolutely epic. These young cats coming up could really benefit from something like that because it is rarely mentioned anymore. Just a thought..

Good vid Randy do you think a big part of your success in using intuition comes from so much repetition? I’m 62 fished since I was 10. I sometimes have a feeling that doesn’t bear out. I’m trying to address knowledge gaps on technique and presentation. If a guy fished 6 days a month that’s his practice time how much study time is reasonable to bolster your intuitive process? Or do you think study is not a high priority? Thanks

Randy I am new to your series and I like your approach. Most anglers suck at teaching and go directly to “you just need time on the water”. I agree with what you are saying but, emphasis on learning and practice together , even taking notes, is a prerequisite to intuition and “gut feelings” which are not magic or voodoo but a subconscious nudge reflecting your knowledge and experience. Great work Randy, I’ll watch a bunch more and subscribe to your videos because I always need a tune up. Old age has a few draw backs. Memory is one of them. Good luck pal.

I appreciate that fact you are willing to share your knowledge and it doesn't go unnoticed . I've been bass fishing my whole life but mostly from small bits and canoes. I caught 3 bass at 7 lbs or just over in a 12 month period here in NH at different locations and I can tell you that following your instinct and what feels right is no joke! The mental part of fishing is the most important part by far. Everyone either has or has access to the rest of the knowledge. Theres videos out there of people bass fishing in every season in every lake in the USA. Showing and explaining what they are doing in a certain season in certain weather conditions, etc. Theres lake breakdowns, theres everything. There is something to the mental just like there is something in "the power of positive thinking" Same thing happens in bass fishing. When your confidence is high, and you KNOW you are going to catch them, and things are good, you catch them. Just like when bad happens, it seems to compound. You break off a fish, then you lose a big one at the boat, etc. Subconsiously you are frustrated and irritated you are probably going faster and wilder than you realize, we've all had those bad days. This year in tournaments, I had 2 tournaments in which I didnt catch a single scoreable bass. Then I had 2 tournaments in which I placed in the top 10. When I look back at things, I realize that on those bad days, I made poor decsions, i made a million bait changes, I didn't bail out of bad areas, I tried to force it because I caught good fish there during practice, etc. It's wild how much your mental outlook affects everything. Now I try to look at fishing a tournament just a blessing to be out there at all, and stay positive and in a great mood.

Excellent thanks. Took me awhile to fully embrace my intuition on the water. I used to fight thru it, not sure why. Now I often stop and change, even if only for a little bit. I realized that if something is nagging me, I’m not fishing my best anyway so just go try what you’re thinking and stay in the present.

So important. Keep doing these. Hopefully they will get it one day. When you keep getting skunked again and again, then you start to care more about these details.👍

I really enjoy and appreciate the mental insight that you provide.. You have spent more time on the water than most will in a lifetime. I could watch hours of video on theories and witnessed behaviors. Keep up the great work Randy 👍

Make more of the videos like these. I really like it. That’s the hardest part to develop for me. The decision making on the water. I struggle with that… sometimes I know I’m doing the wrong thing but I haven’t developed what to change too.

Randy, 10% of the fishermen win 90% of the tournaments. You either have it or you don’t.

I like learning from all my fishing whether I catch or not, I'm grateful to have the opportunity and time in nature is healing. If you're obsessed with catching bigs only, or just focused purely on catching in general, you find yourself unsatisfied and thus incapable of learning and growing as an angler. Real fishing is a love imo

Randy, I love this concept. I occasionally fish with a friend who is a successful flw angler. I greatly respect and treasure the time with him. On our last trip we pulled into a creek arm and he said " shut the boat off, sit still and observe for 5 minutes. Look for life in the area. Look at your mapping and the terrain. Watch how the wind moves, how the birds move... then make your decisions." So many times we're in a hurry to fish that we become narrowed in our focus.

This video is an introduction into finding the "Zone". You hear all athletes say it after dominating performance, "I was in the Zone". You and I have been in the Zone and we know what it is in fishing. Someone has never had that experience, it could be hard to understand. I explain it as a knowing... You get to the lake, you choose the area to fish, the lure, the technique based on your experience. You know the fish are there and you not only catch them, you pattern them. You have one of those days where you fish incredibly big and clean to the point of it almost being a religious experience. I hope you will do more videos on this subject "The Zone" and what it is to be "Fishing in the Zone"

DO NOT go away from mental aspects of bass fishing. If only 1 person watches and it helps then the video was worth it. That one person would be me 😆

I believe the term for what you're describing in the video is called unconscious competence. In order to master a subject, one must develop unconscious competence. Achieved by these three items; repetitiveness (time on the water), muscle memory ( the casting and motion aspect) situational awareness ( your fish movement and conditions aspect).

Yessir, successful tournament bass fishing is mental! I learned that the hard way this year. This was my first year tournament fishing and I did a lot of second guessing and just generally spinning out and it cost me bass, I didn’t start settling down till the end of the season and really felt like my mental state started to even out at the BFL regional. Awesome vids thanks Randy! Keep these coming!

Randy: Dude, stop worrying about the guys who don’t listen to the need for intuition. Give us that juice and forget the false reward of approval from wanna-bes. If you are going to teach us how to be above average or even great anglers, then do it and punt the people who don’t want to develop the discipline necessary to grow in the pursuit of excellence. Trust those of us who want to grow to use your coaching to help us hone our skills. Help us improve our craft. Thanks.

Most younguns that are buying waypoint sd cards and loading up on youtubes cheatcodes will never understand the why you are talking about. That feeling is never molded by process. They use given waypoints instead of finding their own and blame others when techniques dont work. They have no feel. Its a shame that everybody wants the answer but dont put in the work.
