Kenjutsu = Fencing with the sword outside the sheath Kendo = Modern sport fencing based off of old kenjutsu, with armor Iaido = Modern sword cut drawing, based off of old iaijutsu/battojutsu, but done more for moving meditation
@Masterlessmusic10 ай бұрын
Kenjutsu is not fencing. Kenjutsu is quite literally combat training for the Japanese sword and incorporates grappling, tripping and wrestling techniques. All with the aim of keeping you alive and the other person less so. Fencing is a sport and Kendo is the Japanese equivalent. Although it is a budo, so it's less sportified and has a strict moral and etiquette centric focus to the study. It's forging of the character. Iaido does the same but using swords in solo and paired Kata with strong emphasis on drawing and sheathing the blade. Iaido is closer than kendo to kenjutsu in technique, however Kendo is closer to kenjutsu in terms of combative, full contact interaction. I practice both. One for about 6 years now and the other for 20 Years. So that's what I'm basing my comments on.

@@Masterlessmusic Sorry, I didn't mean to come at you like that, forgive my rudeness. Look, when I say "fencing", I mean "swordsmanship" in a very broad sense, because that's originally how the word was used. Before Olympic sport fencing, "fencing" also could have meant something HEMA based, and even many kenjutsu ryuha were often referred to as "fencing" by Westerners in older literature on Japanese culture. I'm basically saying the exact same thing you are, but you're just saying it with much more nuance.
@Masterlessmusic10 ай бұрын

liado = you should be empty. Do not think, feel ,anticipate or plan. Your training should be complete. Be like stone 🪨 give no indication. Not even to yourself ! Observe but do not react ! Focus on your danger points, not the numbers or who has what?. Listen for the opponent to step , to breath, to hesitate !!! Allow him to believe he is secure and in that second end his thoughts. Without thought, without anger or regret. Clean your blade. Enjoy your 🫖🍵 The sun will rise again tomorrow.

In a lot of ways, outside of the specific targeting areas that kendo focuses on, it puts a lot of the actual fundamentals of kenjutsu to practice. While a quick attack in kendo is more of a hit, while kenjutsu it is a cut, the difference being very significant in actual combat vs sparring safely. I would personally recommend learning both if you wanted to enter in any kind of Hema type competition. Kendo being the more important of the two. Because of the emphasis of quick attacks, good footwork, and solid fundamentals, those types of competitions don't really require you to make cuts on the opponent, rather, focusing more on just hitting the opponent in an area to score a point. Kendall already does something similar to this, there for that will serves you extremely well in those situations.

@mwjunk5 ай бұрын
Actually, all jokes aside, kendo strikes are technically meant to be slashes: forward slashes (except body strikes). You guide the blade to your target and push forward, not downward. The theoretical concept is that the curvature of the blade is utilized in this regard, which is why in kendo the strikes must come from the top end of the blade. You cannot do this forward slash at the bottom of the blade as the curvature doesn't help there, and is too close to the fulcrum to be an effective attack. It's a small distinction that most kendoka today do not make, I guess because the nature of the sport is that it doesn't matter really.

Mmmm... I hold 4th Dan in Kendo and practice Iaido as well. Our sister club practice traditional kenjutsu in addition . Although well intentioned ,this video is misleading . I do not believe you are a "trained practioner". I believe you are doing your own thing with little to no guidance from a reputable teacher. However ,I believe your heart is probably in the right place . So, for others visiting ,I'd recommend you look to other examples for demonstration of these arts/ disciplines so you may better understand them. That all being said, I applaud the enthusiasm ,but suggest you seek out an instructor / club thats affiliated under a recognised governing body. Funnel your passion into a more constructive channel. Particularly if you intend to speak in the public domain with any kind of authority on these arts. Best of luck, I hope you find your way.

I mean that's the point though. Their entire purpose is to make anime sword replicas to sell to anime fans. You might not like anime but plenty of people do like it and want to buy replica swords from their favorite animes, the other stuff like their "5 facts about katanas" or "can a katana cut through another katana" videos that they do are mainly just for advertising their products. But it would be cool if they brought someone in with extensive training in swordsmanship for the test cutting, durability test, and the experimental videos they make to advertise their katanas.
@billyholmes16911 ай бұрын
You're missing the point, their target market is anime weebs who want anime swords. They are literally just serving the purpose that their company is for, selling anime katanas. The anime-related videos are advertisements directed at (once again) their target market. Don't complain about a business for doing their job 💀
