Well I have just watched it in Films&Arts (Sept 21,2011)- I got hooked with it when it had already begun. Thanks for hanging it here so I can relish it. Great suspense!

Very enjoyable version. Full of great dialogue and action. Buchan, I think, would have approved.

O.K. Thank you for your comments. I do realize the similarities now. I still don't think it's exactly a remake, but you are right the similarities are remarkable. Both good films I thought. Guess I should watch movies more closely. Cheers.

There are at least four versions of John Buchan's The 39 Steps, none of them really like the book. . One starring Robert Donat, another starring Kenneth More, a third starring Robert Powell and this version which I really enjoyed. . Thanks very much for posting.

In prior film adaptations the ending is much different. This 1980 version has a far more dramatic and noble ending than the prior films. The professor who is wounded gets one gun shot at Victoria who falls off the pier with a bullet wound. Hannay (our hero) finds a gun and shoots the professor dead. Then after the gun fight, Hannay dives into the bay to search for Victoria. The Commander of the Secret Service tries to console Richard. The voice over declares that even tho Victoria & Richard were able to avoid a German invasion of England, they were not able to stop the course of history as England went to War under Winston Churchill. The last scene shows Harry (Victoria's brother) whispering to Richard that Victoria wanted to say farewell. They nod, and then she disappears as a load of luggage passes between them. It is Harry who encourages the viewer by saying to Richard "We'll see you after the war." Jax Sun

Does anyone besides me notice that North By Northwest is a remake of The 39 Steps. Since both were Hitchcock Films, I guess that would make sense.

I can think if 39 reasons to ignore this movie. They should have stuck with the original story. The BBC strikes again.

I'll miss the old "Mr. Memory" showing at the London Palladian. Hitchcock used that twist quite well.

Very different, and better in my view, than the fusty Hitchcock film of the mid-1930s.

@wenedsday I agree that no film could ever parallel Hitchcock's classic, but I think you're being a little harsh. Of all the versions of this story produced subsequent to the 1935 film, this is by far my favourite. I like how it intermingles aspects of the novel by Buchan and Hitchcock's film. Also, the added ingredient of the suffragist movement adds some extra flavour to this film. I particularly like the open ending which provides the opportunity for a sequel. Perhaps Greenmantle?

no film ever produced sticks to the book. The scriptwriter feels bound to alter things a bit - or quite a lot? The 1930s version goes well wide of the book. The location of the 39 Steps is never revealed. I often wonder why this is.

Where on earth did you get that from? North by Northwest was a fantasy and a vehicle for Cary Grant. The 39 Steps was an espionage thriller. They are not even remotely similar.

I really enjoyed the intrigue and the opposes attracting romance, but I do not understand the cloak and dagger, top secret ending. The German spies will be executed for murder and the Uncle will be executed as a traitor, so no one will know that Victoria is a spy.

Nice bits of acting, that, from Rupert Penry-Jones. Shows some subtlety and nuance of interpretation. Must have been miserable to film the water scenes, though. Cold and soaking wet through take after take.

Here are the similarities. 1) An ordinary man is falsely accused of murder 2) He picks up the murder weapon and leaves his finger prints 3) He is becomes the captive of and is chased by foreign agents 4) The foreign agents use an airplane to chase him through a field and kill him using the airplanes machine guns. 5) The becomes involved with a beautiful female secret agent working under cover 6) He is cleared of the murder charges by the government 7) Hitchcock directed both movies

It would probably be fair to say that North by northwest was a film using many elements from the 39 steps to make a sort of version of the story that he felt would be right for American audiences.

I agree, all the movies pull a little from the book, but it is such a good story I wonder that no one had the guts NOT to change it.

If one thinks of this as a movie all its own rather than a remake, it really is good. Just don’t try to compare it to any of the others.
