I don't get why so many people hate the harmonica bridge. It's objectively the best bridge Gibson has ever put out, with superior adjustment range both in height and intonation range.
@bwgti6 жыл бұрын
Those are probably all true points. But people hate them because they look clunky.
@karlreimner40142 жыл бұрын
It’s not because the radius of the bridge is greater then the radius of the neck, which means you cant get the middle two stings low enough. Unless you file the groves down, then it’s perfect

I purchased a Marauder in Mar of 1975 my second guitar. I still play it in a band on a regular basis. I have never found anything I liked better. I have replaced the pickups all of the wiring the faceplate and tuners. I removed the switch and tone control. I have a volume control for each pickup and that's it. 45 years of regular use. Never had a fret job and doesn't need one.

Awesome! I take it that these things were built very tough. My big brother had a Gibson Grabber bass from about 1977 to 1983. Gibson was very in to trying to branch out. The problem was probably with price point. Around my area, stores only stocked these models ONCE. If you didn't pick up on one new by 1979, you were out of luck. This is a quality axe. Thanks for presenting it. At the time, my brother was playing bass (and not guitar at that point) so I don't think he ever tried one out at a music store or anything. This answers a lot of 40 year old questions that I've had. My question is, were these sort of "budget" Gibsons? If not, one of the reasons you'd get a Gibson is because it "looked" like a Gibson. These ones didn't. So, you didn't get anything on "snob appeal" or "other player envy." Case in point, when my brother traded off his Grabber, it sat in that shop for about a year or so.

Gibson gave Paul boxes and boxes of them that were originally going to be destroyed by Gibson. So, they let him trash them instead. Gibson sponsored Kiss at that time. ALL of them were given Gibson's to play and the Pearl drums too (Gibson owned). So......that is as deep as that goes. Great guitars......and just free, defective instruments given to a sponsored act.

I love the Norlin era of Gibson. The RD's especially. My memory of the Marauder was when I first started playing I was jamming Metallica tunes with a guy that had one. I was playing an old Gibson EB-0 copy bass and he had a an early model Marauder with the clear pickups. I loved that guitar especially the clear pickups. Was my introduction to an actual Gibson. When I was younger and still playing heavily I never found one otherwise I would have picked it up in a heartbeat. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a 77 RD Standard bass for cheap, though. Now even though a lot of people hate the Norlin stuff the prices are through the roof. Would still be nice to have one but can't justify the price. Maybe one day...lol.

I wonder if Gibson realised that when they changed the selector switch for a blend control they were actually referencing the wiring that the two-pickup Esquire (which became the Telecaster) had between 1950 and 1951?

Great to see and hear a 'new old stock' -piece. I own a stock 1978 natural mahogany example, with the blend switch. I love this thing. It's not a Les Paul of course, and it's not really a Telecaster too. It is something on its own. Got his three single coil-brother, the S-1, as well. Love that one also.

@alabamahebrew6 жыл бұрын
Austin - why such a low price? I know they are not high dollar guitars but this one is such a rare find I thought it would be at least $800 more than what you're asking price is. How do you know where to set your prices? Is there like a web site you can go to check the value of your guitar? That is one nice guitar, as you know I'm not into the flat top LP style but I think I could deal with that in this guitar. I love that fully adjustable tone/pup control. I am more like you where I don't want a ton of options, but I can see where that full range pot would be sweet instead of just a two position. I think once you play it enough you will just kind of know where to put it to get the particular sound you're looking for in a certain song. LOL nice usage of KISS there and your lead editing!! I know it's all part of "the show" but It has always irked me to see rock stars smashing their guitars!! I know Paul Stanley has smashed probably 100,000 guitars now and ya know what? There are starving kids in China who would love to have one of those guitars lol. Maybe that's Gibsons plan? come out with a cheap entry level guitar and make enough to give to the rock stars to smash?
@_dmfd5 жыл бұрын
They're generally not worth too much. More of a novelty guitar. Mines a mid 70's model and in great condition besides the finish is worn but since it's a natural finish not too big of a deal. I'd never sell it just cause' I actually love the way it plays and sounds but I had it appraised in 2012 from a local shop owned by a Luthier in Dayton, OH and he said mine then was worth around $1,200 in the condition. Since then the finish has worn considerably more. It's also a 70's era Gibson which.. eh.

These are funky and cool guitars. The one thing I don't like is that a fairly large number of them have really sloppy neck pockets. Fender took a lot of flack (deservedly so) for their neck pockets in the 70s but many of those never approached the gap size you see on some of these Gibsons
@Trog6 жыл бұрын
The worn marauder you see in this video does have a HUGE gap, this NOS one isn't too bad though!

I have a 1974 " Natural " finish Marauder but mine is not in this condition at all lmao. My finish looks like the guitar spent its life as a workbench table top. Either way I love that guitar so much. The tone is so quirky. Pretty sure mine is Mahogony. The neck very much plays like a Tele. The only thing I don't like about the guitar is the Flying V style headstock. These were mass produced but a shit ton of these didn't make it out past the 90's. You can get a good condition one for around $1k - $1.2k.

Hi, my first Gibson, very underpowered guitar, my band then, the lead had a les paul firebrand to my marauder, we had matching silver face twins, and you couldn't hear me unless he was playing lead. Got an S1 next, same thing, I always felt that heavy layer of plastic on the pickups affected the volume. I moved on to a new explorer with shaw pickups, and never looked back to my entry level Gibsons.

@corneliuscrewe81656 жыл бұрын
There is a website that has a bunch of info on it, I’ll try to find it for you. The short version is that Les Paul was Ace’s main guitar for years, and in the early days it doubled as the smoker, so it kinda got beat up. When they hit big, Ace gradually switched over to the 3 pickup Customs (some of which weren’t 3 pickups at all, they had dummy middle pickups glued onto them). Anyhow, at some point Ace had the Tobacco converted to a double cutaway by Strings n Things and painted black, then sold it when times got tough. It has since resurfaced, and Ace was even reunited with it onstage. Shame about the damned extra cutaway.

Just think of all the Marauders that were smashed by Paul Stanley from 1975 to 1980....Then, for the 1982-83 "Creatures of the Night" tour (which, to the best of my knowledge, was the last tour for guitar smashing until the reunion tour in 1996), Gibson gave him Sonex 180s. I'd imagine there were a few fights in the audience over the carnage.

Another famous user of the Marauder is George Kooijmans of Golden earring, who uses (still does) one as his dropped D guitar for songs like "Long blond animal" kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2TRaISteseFrcU He gets a really bad ass sound from it. But I should say that the most surprising user of a Marauder I can think of was in an AC/DC tribute band, he was their "Malcolm." and he got his Marauder sound so convincingly like Malcolm's Gretsch it was mind blowing.
