"Ridiculously bright" is the Bill Lawrence philosophy in a nutshell. He really believed that a pickup should be as bright as possible, since you can easily shape the high end with simple passive electronics (resistors and capacitors). Unfortunately, guitarists were already used to simply playing with all knobs on 10. I have a lot of his later pickup designs (under his Wilde brand), and they're all great...but they are definitely bright. Tone knobs are your friend.
@DavidRavenMoon
@DavidRavenMoon Жыл бұрын
I love his pickups. They are bright. I’m a pickup maker myself and finally figured out how to get that L-500 sound. I think a lot of guitarists don’t like bright pickups because they don’t know how to get a good tone in general, and those pickups show up sloppy playing. Lol
@Mark-vv1dy
@Mark-vv1dy Жыл бұрын
@Raven Moon Totally agree. I actually just finished putting in an L-500C and L-500L into one of my Flying Vs today. The L-500C is a unicorn among humbuckers, it's so bright and snappy that I could use the same amp settings that I use for my SSS Strat.
@miahconnell23
@miahconnell23 Жыл бұрын
@@DavidRavenMoon earnest query: When y’all say “bright,” do you mean “no shame in showcasing treble ?” Or does “bright” mean super-responsive, as in: “just the ridges of my fingerprints make a treble-y sound and I haven’t even used my fingernails or a pick yet ?” I Love the sound of TV Jones’s Classics, but I’d use different adjectives such as “bell-like” and “clear” and “articulate” (as the reasons I love those so well). I’ll be shopping around for a new (new to me, probably not brand-new) guitar, and I wanna be sure I’m correctly expressing my wants/needs/preferences. Even though true hollow-bodies are my favourites, I keep eyeballing LP Special Tributes for their aesthetic and because those could be bumped or lightly damaged at rowdy pub gigs, and the guitar would remain dependable.
@DavidRavenMoon
@DavidRavenMoon Жыл бұрын
@@miahconnell23 To me “bright” is a Tele bridge pickup. I like my humbuckers to be able to get bright and chimey. You can always darken them up. It seems a lot of players want dark or “warm” sounding humbuckers. I think that covers up bad technique, and it’s probably easier for them to dial in a tone on their amp. There’s a misconception that PAFs were warm or dark sounding. But they were actually bright and snappy. They wanted them to sound like P-90s. And the P-90s back then sounded like somewhat fuller Strat pickups. And yes, Filter’Trons are nice and bright because they aren’t sound as hot and have larger magnets.
@miahconnell23
@miahconnell23 Жыл бұрын
@@DavidRavenMoon thank you, for real. If the word “bright” is linked up to a tele’s bridge pick-up, then I think I’ve been using the word correctly. Too much treble without enough mid and bass actually hurts my ears in the hands of many guitarists. But, for a rarer set of guitarists, a tele’s bridge pickup can cut through the mix and/or other instruments in the band. I think that’s pro’ly due to judicious use & use by a guitar-player who is tone-conscious.

I have the Cream Sparkle in very good condition, just with quite a bit of finish checking. My cousin gave it to me either in the late 70’s or early 80’s. The neck is always rock steady with super low action,.. one of my favorite specs is the mother of pearl dot inlays on maple.. noice!… but the nut width is so narrow that it’s a little odd. I still have all the original parts but I swapped out custom cream plastics to go with the lighter shade. The Cream Sparkle is not translucent. As a kid I was a bit cringy about the sparkle aspect with the butter yellow palette, but It’s really a killer simple guitar. She has never been my favorite.. just a sentimental favorite and I’m glad I never sold her. I often wished that I had been given a DC special instead, but I am grateful. She’s still my only Gibson so far although I have a long wishlist. It’s a rare , but quirky bird. I wonder how much mine is worth ? Yeah it can get quite bright, but that’s what’s cool about it. And the neck pickup with the tone rolled off is quite a wide contrast with the bridge. I’ve wondered at times if it was Gibson’s version of a Tele style guitar. You can tell my body is handmade … so it’s kind of cool in an imperfect way.

I had an L-6S Custom for a while (Plain Maple Finish). One of the few Gibson Guitars that I really was enjoying....but it had a problem with a neck that had a permanent backbow (I loosened the truss rod until it was rattling & it still was bad), and I didn't want to go over 10 gauge strings to try to get it more playable with a decently low action. I Loved the tones on mine! (...and I am more of a neck pick up or middle position guy anyway. Just readjust your amp settings!)

One other thing, I don't like the Jack in front, but the sides are thin to install one jack there. Maybe that's what they needed to litten up to get a 7lb guitar. One other thing, I still have, from 1982 a Bill Laurence humbucker and it still worked the last time I used it. The guitar I used it last was in a Gibson-like Les Paul's birdseye maple body with 2" inch center stripe of mahogany. Made by Michael Tobias, (before Gibson bought his sole and he was working in Hollywood) The neck was all maple Strat neck, with the black walnut skunk stripe. I played that on guitar from 1982 to 2015 and it was becoming too heavy. I bought a Squire and I strip the electronics and wired up many different guitar circuits with that guitar. My favorite circuit was humbuckers with split-coils. I fell in love creating that circuit and treble bleed circuits. I'm not crazy about the phase circuits both on a 5 way switch of capacitors or a reversal poles from a small circuit (no batteries needed) on a potentialmeter or a volume pod, 250K ohms or 500K ohms. Slowly or how you spin the knob to changing poles north to south moves. So my guitars will have best electronics combinations I know. One pickup I'd like to try would be Fishman P90s. Cheers!

Salutations Austin! That is a decent example of that particular model, and it has a very interesting finish. I used to own an L6S that was black with a set neck, a varitone control, and I believe it had a stop bar, I put two different Dimarzio pickups in it and also a MIDI pickup, it sounded and played great. The black finish on the neck wore off and exposed the maple, and it also had an ebony fretboard with 24 frets. I now miss that guitar. Thank you for posting these videos! Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️✨🎸

@5:42 I would use a small blob medium adhesion hot glue on the base of those wires. You'd be less concerned if you wanted to play and enjoy it, plus medium adhesion would come off easily enough to get it back to "stock" if you were to sell it as original. That said, I bet there is a good silicone solution as well.
@VidMashUp
@VidMashUp Жыл бұрын
There's no way you'd get any type of hot glue off if those wires without snapping them. They are the most fragile wires you can imagine. And you'd risk damaging the coating on the wire with any heat. The problem though, isn't with them breaking while you're playing the guitar. I think he was just concerned with taking them out. As fragile as they are, they don't tend to snap spontaneously.

If only their Jaguars came sooner I would of been more impressed! I look at how many tones you can pull with one guitar like from Hendrex or Stevie Ray Vaughn or Eddy Van Haylin (sorry about spelling, dyslexic problem). I also have back problems and my guitars have to be lite like 8lbs and litter than most of the Gibsons you own. Enough - cheers!

Loving these comments. The funnier they are the more true! It's worthy of consideration that Midnight Special's were essentially blowouts of bodies/necks/hardware left over from production of "real" L6-S's. Guys in the stores on 48th street used to laugh at them as being "worse than Japanese" (another story when they were pushing OEM-branded Ibanez/Fuji-Gen guitars but that's for another day). I have a '74 matte finish Midnight Special loaded with extremely early (as in bought from Larry) Dimarzio pickups and somehow it's always sounded great and been rock solid in every respect. Intonates perfectly and has a baseball bat neck with the largest frets I've ever felt on a '70's Gibson. And yep. Paul Stanley bought these things to smash. Lot's of 'em. And talk about polarizing - The L6-S itself was the cause of an epic fallout between Bill Lawrence and Gibson (as well as Santana, see below). Lawrence's prototype L6-S guitars made the rounds on 48th Street while he was tweaking them and were heralded as innovative and much-needed higher quality "mid-tier" instruments. Charlie LoBue, Giuliano Balestra and Alex (Alex Axe) were acquaintances of my Dad's and suggested that when these were released they'd be less expensive than Les Paul's and perfect candidates for my first real Gibson. Hence the budget model (I was 10). Unfortunately, the bean counters at Norlin ignored virtually all of Bill Lawrence's specs excepting body shape/contours (actually, the bottom edge of the guitar was originally contoured as deeply as the top but Gibson failed to do this on production guitars). The Super Humbuckers were el-cheapo versions of the pickups he designed (You could get these from him special order - They were tremendously high output and significantly attenuated the brightness found in many Norlin iterations). It wasn't just the pickups, when Lawrence received the final product he totally lost his sh!t and immediately dissociated himself from Gibson. Santana had been lined up to endorse these on the strength of the prototypes but was so underwhelmed (being polite here) by the production versions he appeared in one ad and continued on with Yamaha, much to Gibson's dismay. And all the crazy finishes and pickguard shape changes were "lipstick on a pig." In fact, I learned that phrase from a salesman at Sam Ash describing the L6-S line. LOL They couldn't give these things away so they started painting them with increasingly wacky colors. Ironically, everyone who has ever picked up my guitar, heard it onstage or a recording has totally dug it. Anyway, I think this is the first time I've ever commented on YT but I LOVE the Trogly show so figured I might as well. Great weekend to all.

They're epoxy potted. If it breaks past where the epoxy begins, you'd have to be one hell of a magician to fix it. The covers don't even come off.

Uh, Trogly... I know you apparently have no love for Gibson's Kalamazoo line of solid body guitars from the '60's but they had bolt-on necks. Don't Kalamazoo KG series guitars pre-date these L6 models or are you still going to maintain Kalamazoo KG's never existed?
