Punctuation is important! In the writing paper of the B2 First (FCE), C1 Advanced (CAE) and C2 Proficiency (CPE) Cambridge English exams, one of the marking criteria the examiners look at is organisation. A well organised text is punctuated correctly, and that means using the comma appropriately. In this video, I explain the 4 most common comma mistakes.

Hi Ben, this video came right in time. I always forget to make commas, but they are so esssential. I have to take my time on practise them much more, especially now I am translating my story into English. I didn't expect a video today, so I was very late to watch it. Thank you so much for taking your time on such a special day, that makes me even more a fan 😊. I wish you and Amy and everyone in your Family a HAPPY EASTER ❤🐇

Hello Ben! Today I had my C1 advanced exam! I want to say thank you for all your hard work that you’ve put into your videos! It helped me a lot, I also bought your course and I felt so prepared for the exam. Of course I had to practice besides the course, but you made difficult things very clear to me. Hopefully I will pass! Thank you for everything you have taught me for te past 2 months! You’ve made a huge difference to my C1 exam. I would suggest everyone to buy his course if you want to pass!! It is so worth it!!

Hi Ben! I must add a fifth very common mistake: 5) substituting the full stop with commas. Many university students have forgotten the use of the full stop completely! They make an excessively long sentence full of commas in the form of paragraphs.

Hello, Ben! To the point, as always! I have some questions, though: - Was I right to put a comma before "though" in my previous statement? I mean, when we finish the sentence with "though". Like "He's a very tall boy. He doesn't play basketball, though". Although it comes at the end of the sentence, this usage seems to me very similar to introductory words and phrases you explained, so putting a comma there seems natural to me. I'm not sure, though.😉 - Conditional sentences beginning with if -- if we connect clauses with "then", should we still put a comma? Like in "If you'd taken Ben's online course, then you would've passed the exam". - Independent clauses -- the list of "co-ordinating conjunctions" you gave (fanboys) is not definite, is it? I mean -- I think that in your example "Productivity has been declining for months, so measures need to be taken", instead of "so", you could use "therefore" or "hence", couldn't you? I suppose the same rule of putting comma would still apply, right?

Hi Zoran Good questions! 1. Yes, you should put a comma before "though". Nowadays, many writers don't do it, though. 🙂 2. Yes, you need a comma before "then" in conditional sentences 3. Those are the only coordinating conjunctions (fanboys). "Therefore", "Hence", "However" etc are conjuctive adverbs, and technically should not be used to link independent clauses (although, in reality, many writers do use them in that way). They should be used at the beginning of the sentence. Eg. "Therefore, measures need to be taken." The "rules" are often broken in creative and informal writing for stylistic purposes, but they should be followed in academic contexts.

Hey, Can you help me with this paragraph please. I think sometimes I am an optimist person, but sometimes I feel like I am a realistic person, it depends of the situation I am in. Sometimes I prefer to be outgoing, I try to talk more with people, I enjoy listening to them, because I can learn many things. And I like to see the world as it is. But on the other hand some days I am quite serious, more often when I am at work I have decided to be a workaholic person.

Can I please ask on behalf of a friend who is sitting her C1 soon - the Oxford Comma in the CEFR exam: yes or no? I have my own opinion on the issue :D but for the exam/examiners - should she use the Oxford Comma or not? Thanks.

Yes, she can use the Oxford comma. I'm not a fan, but the examiners must accept both options.
