Love, Death, and ... Drink.
Many of the great Irish folk ballads wrestle with one or two of these big themes.
Carrickfergus manages to cover all three while also giving a shout-out to towns in both the north and south of the island.
The melody originates from an 18th-century Irish language song, translated as There Was A Noblewoman.
The first time I heard that melody, it immediately lodged in my memory. It's so hard to forget that you'd be forgiven for volunteering an unaccompanied rendition at the tail-end of a wedding or a late-night pub session.
The Clancy Brothers, Chieftains, and The Dubliners have all recorded the song.
Even Bryan Ferry crooned his own inimitable version on his 1978 album, The Bride Stripped Bare.
Check out our stripped-down take on it, filmed close to home at a viewpoint overlooking Carlingford Bay.
Filmed on location at Flagstaff Viewpoint, Newry, Co. Armagh by FleadhTV for TV3, Ireland.
