We, in the studio have become obsessed with compressors. I remember reading an article that was written by a famous mixing engineer and he said, in the old days, you didnt worry about what type of compressor you had, you just used what was available, didn't matter, 1176 or a radio shack compressor, you just used it. He said that the biggest worry that the engineer had in those days was getting through the sessions without the tape machine breaking down and not what type of compressor you were using..

You missed probably the most important one - the diode bridge compressor made famous by Rupert Neve in the 70s e.g. the 2254

Fantastic explanation. Unfortunately the compressor in my garage adds too much noise to the mix so I'd better go for these four types. Badum tiss. Lol. Seriously though, explaining the difference between a compressor that's best for a source rather than a bus is huge. Tubes and FETs are voltage controlled devices whereas ooto isolators and transistors are current controlled. Electrical engineering game is strong. Now if only I could sing ...

This was informative. I tend to use compressors on their respective sources; FET on individual tracks, VCA on busses, and optical sometimes when stacking compression. But I never knew why I subconsciously reached for these compressors for these applications, until now!

You left out Pulse WIdth Modulation compression like the POM Pye and the Bridge Diode compressors like the Neve 33609. Don't forget about air compressors like the Ingersoll Rand which blows compressed air toward your speakers to reduce the dynamic range. OK I'm joking about the last one but the others are worth a mention.

Electricity isn’t 1/100’th the speed of light. What you are referring to is frequency being at 60 hz, coming off the line. A lot of instances boost the frequency. Frequency drives on a motor for example. Electronic ballasts in a light commonly change frequencies to 50Khz, which makes electricity way faster than the speed of light (according to your claim)

It's the internet, so facts are not important, or pronunciation or how compressors work, or what components are important in a FET. But outside of that, it's a very nice video. Now viewers think they know what is going on, which is the value KZbin brings us.

@@lewisticknor audio is a strange area of expertise. A kid with a laptop and headphones can make better music and mixes than someone who is experienced, competent, knowledgeable etc… which raises a question in philosophy. And all these software companies are trying to make the best pre-set workflow so everyone can sound the same. $$$

I almost always use Eq first because I want my compression to smooth it out! This is something I adopted from old school mixers on ssl boards that always put the eq first to smooth out large boosts that might not sound musical. Opto and tube are the ones to go to for color! -Miami
