In this productivity tip, we'll cover the four different types of distractions and interruptions described by Chris Bailey in his book Hyperfocus.
Distractions can be categorised as whether they're annoying or fun and whether you have control over them or not.
The first type is Annoying Distractions Out of Your Control - like unnecessary meetings or loud coworkers. You can't avoid these, so just power through and refocus after.
Then there are Fun Distractions Out of Your Control - say, someone inviting you to an impromptu lunch. Enjoy the break, but get back on task after.
The third type is Annoying Distractions In Your Control - things like notification pings or checking emails constantly. Be proactive and turn these off to avoid interruptions entirely.
Finally, there are Fun Distractions In Your Control - like scrolling social media or watching viral videos. You control these, so schedule them as intentional breaks when you're ready.
Categorising distractions this way lets you handle each type properly. Embrace fun surprises, avoid annoying interruptions you control, and just deal with the ones outside your control by quickly refocusing.
Use this simple framework to become aware of distractions and manage them better!
