He's 100% correct. I'm middle aged and never really exercised in my entire life. After watching some of David's videos, I decided to start running. At first, I couldn't even run 100 yards. Now after a few months, I'm getting close to three miles but I still feel my mind telling me to quit. After the first quarter mile, my mind says hey this isn't fun time to stop. I keep going. Around a mile, the same thing happens and I keep going. At some point, I hit the zone where I don't think about the pain or discomfort anymore and I just keep going. I know my body is stronger now but more importantly, I'm learning to control my mind.

I was on the same boat. 38 years old, 5’10 240 lbs, new dad, and working night shifts. Always making excuses. 5 months later I’m about to break 200 lbs, and went from 100 yards to 5 mile runs. Gotta stay driven

"The 40% rule is simple: When your mind is telling you that you’re done, that you’re exhausted, that you cannot possibly go any further, you’re only actually 40% done."

I hope that I can ask a few quick questions: 1) Why 40%? Even in the example he used the car was doing more than 40%. Why not 80%? 2) Does this apply to everything? When I lift weights my mind tells me that I can’t lift more than 100lbs so I should really be able to lift 160lbs right? 3) Sometimes when I bench I will keep going until my arms become fatigued. With this strategy in mind muscle fatigue is just mind over matter right? Thank you for your time.

@@howtwodostuff6695 no your mind is mental lifting weights has mental but mostly physical. If you physically can’t do more than 100lbs than you can’t. But what you can control is your reaction. You say ok my max is a 100. Now I’ll go 80% of my max and get as many clean form reps as I can for 2 weeks and see where my max is then repeat. And where the 40% rule comes in in that scenario making the time to get to the gym every day 6 days a week. Even if I don’t have time I make time no excuses. Then once you’re there no slacking. You’re not tired you’re not sore fuckin stretch. Do 80% of your max if you’re arms are burning and hurting and you’re 1 rep from tieing your reps from yesterday than you don’t get off that bench until you get 2 more clean reps. That’s the 40% rule. And know your limits don’t hurt yourself. If you physically can’t do it than don’t do it. If your body gives before your mind you can’t help that. You recover and come back the next day. That’s progress. That’s pushing your mind.

Twice qualified CPT (personal trainer) here and I think most people misunderstand what "pain" is. There are 2 types of pain and everytime I train a client. I ALWAYS tell theclient that if they are feeling MUSCLE pain like burning kind of pain that's good pain you are free to push past your 40% limit there. But if you're feeling SHARP stinging ligament or bone or nerve pain you must STOP. No point passing the 40% there. It's not a sign of weakness just that your hardware has reached its limit. When you train your muscles whever it be running or weights WILL translate to LESS ligmanet and nerve pain over time. Cos you're stronger.

I didn't know that I was already doing this before at 2017 when I was training in badminton. I was surpassing that 40% and improved so much faster than the others when the others have trained much longer than I did when I only have started playing badminton for a year. I only knew about this concept when I read the book Can't hurt me by David Goggins and it was nice knowing that I was able to do that and become professional. But by 2018- 2020, I lost it. I was depressed because I was forced to stop. and Now I am back, I am trying to surpass that 40% again in studying and exercising. I will commit to it this time. Even when I feel like I can't, I will commit this time and will not go back to the time that I felt I am so entitled and became depressed. I will work hard and maybe someday, I could thank David Goggins in person.

The habit that keeps us in the comfort zone prevents us from wanting to choose a challenge that develops us. The potential inherent in us is much higher than the routine we chose. As in a car it is possible to travel much faster than our daily use. We are in the comfort zone only utilizing 40% of the potential. We will realize that we are capable and can achieve things we never thought we could.

Iv been doing 4mile jogs. Last night I did 12.4miles, which is the best i'v done for 8 years. . I just wanted to see how far my legs could take me until I was at walking pace. I really didn't even feel like jogging before I did it but when you over think "wow that to far, I can't be bothered today, , my body can't do that!" then you limit yourself to going as far as your mind saying "oh that's good going" instead of how far your body will and can actually go. I will admit its painful to walk the next day 😅😂

Sounds good but pain does mean stop for a reason. I use to push myself through massive sciatic nerve pain and keep working and it ruined my life because now I can cant walk normal and deal with agony everyday. Carful ! Pain is a wonderful things and I would advice to be aware what it is saying not ignore it.

You are not your mind and you are not your body. Just like your car is not an engine and it is not a chassis. You are the amalgamation of all of these things put together to complete one organism. Which is YOU. As far as what hes talking about, hes talking about the non cognitive functions of the brain. The stuff YOU dont think about on your own, that voice that tells you to back off from something you may want to achieve, when YOU want to do something difficult but that non cognitive part of the brain is sounding the alarms and saying this is too hard. Thats what hes saying
