In this video:
I leave my marina in key largo with the plan of going offshore fishing. I was 100% set on making this a catch n cook video so the goals had been set and the fishing game is on!
My first stop is the tavernier creek marina where I get gas for my offshore fishing trip. $407 of gas to be specific. Phew! And then the worst thing ever happens to someone trying to catch fish. The boat engine dies...
3 hours later and having tried to fix everything on the engine I finally get it running again. Looks like I can go offshore after all. I guess a little bit of fishing is better than no fishing at all!
I troll and troll and troll. Right off the patch reefs off key largo florida. I was hoping I could maybe hook a mahi or wahoo or literally anything, but the sun was setting and it's time to run back home.
At home I decide the fish fight is not over and head to the docks with some shrimp. I also plan on catching a buzz tonight after all those boat problems! At the docks I catch a ladyfish. I get a bunch of strikes, but ultimately am left with just a ladyfish.
Screw it! I fillet and clean the ladyfish. Then I drop it into some batter and fry the ladyfish. This better be worth the catch n cook video title. I actually think the ladyfish didn't taste too bad, the only problem is that it's FULL of little ribs.

The way to get the bones out of lady fish. Felet from head to tale, leaving felet attached at the tale, take a spoon and scrape the soft meat out of the bones which are attached to the fish skin leaving only skin and bones. Make meat into small balls or pattys, batter in dry batter and fry or mix other ingredients to make fish cakes or fritters. Very tasty! Logger John.

I grew up fishing one north side of that bridge...(well there and channel 5) used to free line with thread herring and catch so many 25+ inch mangroves also used to go around kahiki at the center of tav creek more or less . good times

I appreciate you perseverance! 😀 I also agree with investing in BoatUS towing. Thought the trolling speed was a bit too fast, but am not as experienced in that dept. A neighbor of mine offered me to try “fish croquetas” and I thought they were the best I’d had. When we talked more about it and asked what fish he used he said “lady fish”! He actually targets them to make croquettes. He told me he actually spoons the meat from them thereby avoiding the bones and only collecting the meat. Like you told us, he described the meat as very soft. Thanks for the great show and already looking forward to viewing your next one. Regards

I had to laugh! Many years ago (I was around your age at the time) I cooked a ladyfish! It has bones that run all through the meat and the meat is mushy. It is worse after being frozen... Too soft to even use as cut bait! Thanks for the memories and a good laugh!

for the lure hooks getting stuck I'd suggest taking the swivel off and putting a split ring. Not so much slack in the hook and its shorter so won't reach round to get stuck on the top

fuel injector cleaner is 5 bucks for a bottle to mix in with the gas. i use it on my antique evinrude and it runs like a brand new motor!

Your motor was flooded. I had a 1996 Mercury 90 ELPTO and would do the same thing. Wait a min and wide open throttle and would fire up again. Happened 10 miles off shore with a commercial shrimper coming at me with full gear dragging. Was glad to smell the two stroke and get out of the way.

Really enjoy your channel, I have unsubscribed from many of the other you tube channels coming out of FL. I can tell you are an avid angler and it is nice to see a real fishing trip without all the production. Definitely can't load up the box on every trip, that is not reality. I'm a new fan of your videos. The Yozuri will not troll at those speeds. It wants to pop out of the water. I fish out of Galveston and am very envious that you are in such clear and deep water so close to shore. I have a 266 Spostfish World Cat CC and to reach 100' ,I will need to motor close to 50-60 miles and still not have blue water. Try the heavy Blue and White Islander with a ballyhoo. That is always our go to lure for everything from Kingfish, Mahi, White Marlin and definitley Wahoo. Black and purple excellent also. Best, Ray, AKA, Fishnmagician of Galveston.

Steve at Seatow there in Key Largo is great. It's 80 bucks a year. Also, you can carry gas for way less. 5x 5 gallon tanks, as long as you are using the boat a lot it does not matter if you use the cheap stuff. Just put 25 gallons in each time you go and occasionally you have to make an extra trip but it will greatly cut your fuel Costs. I am really glad you were still inshore when this happened. Recently had to be towed in by a guy in a Jon boat.... Take Care, Dan

That bonito lure has that hook issue when is dropped in the water where at first gets those few skips on the surface before sinking. Try to release the lure avoiding any skips on the surface. Normally that happens because the drag on the reel is too tight at drop. I also got wrapping issues when the fish hits it without hooking. I notice that at slower trolling speeds. Overall is a good lure, but babysitting is definitely required.

You can go that route, however what i would try first is near to freespool or if such setting is not possible on your reel, turn on the clicker with no drag and let it sink. After 30+ of line release yards remains stable underneath the water. Also there are two size versions of those lures the 6" and 8". Looks like yours is the 6-3/4". I have both, and the random hook issue is the same on either size. Less on high speed trolling.

With a marketing background I'm sure you already know this, but Google AdWords video is a great way to grow your channel. You can run one of your videos as pay per click ad that will appear in people's recommended. It's only 1 or 2 cents a click and you know the person is interested in your genre because they clicked it. Food for thought.

Heads up on the ladyfish. If you want to eat it, don't bother trying to eat the fillets. Fillet it, grab a spoon, and scoop out the meat. Meat comes right off the ribs and skin. Fantastic fish for stuff like fish cakes.

After a trip out and you’re not going out for a few days Unhook your fuel line and leave your engine running to burn all the fuel out of the carbs the oil in the fuel makes the float pin get stuck closed and the engine starved for fuel
