It's very true that when you look at the value of the components used there is a huge profit margin. I find it funny when it says 'hand-wired' as a selling point because even the cheapest 'made in China' are hand-wired and soldered.
@j_freed4 жыл бұрын
Sort of! That's saying very little though. You sometimes look at a 2% difference that makes a difference. It's like with guitars, doing a fully proper nut and fully worked frets etc. makes the guitar physically 99.8% the same as before, but those piddling minor differences can have a lot of leverage in the overall usefulness of the gear (playability and tone.) Small physical differences are amplified, literally. Obviously, there's a 'mass' market for players of guitars who settle, eg. who always use the raw and rough factory setup and never try a good guitar tech. Then there's another 'boutique' market for guys who want all their guitars spot on, want to try every overdrive and compression pedal etc. The cheap guys save money and they also support the majority market.
@gavinpearcey4 жыл бұрын
@@j_freed there's a big difference between pedals and proper guitar finishing. Properly levelling the frets and filing the but and setting the action aren't mass producible things. A circuit board with solder in components is. All of the fine work is done once in the circuit design. There is no special soldering technique or way to wire a pot to the board to make these comparible.

Actually if the circuit is the same and the components are the same then there's no difference between them. The little differences is due to capacitors tolerance (no capacitor can have an exact perfect value, but the value is in a little range around the target value) so the sum of all the caps imperfections gives to the pedal it's fingerprint. I mean, also two identical 5k pedals may sound a liiitle different

But they're not the same because the original Klon has a black gook that's put over the circuit boards to prevent ppl from doing precisely what you're saying. You can't see the circuits. @nicwilson892 жыл бұрын
Yea, the tolerance on component values will mean that you can not set the knobs to the same position and get exactly the same sound, it'd even still be slightly different if you cherry picked parts between two real klons, whether or not it'd be perceptible to the ear. You can use much more expensive .1% components but that's a massive waste of money and would lead to a massive build cost. Gotta play around with the knobs to find the same sorta sounds between the two

That’s actually a good point especially for the original although isn’t it supposed to have a built in buffer? Or both have buffers if they’re supposed to be the same? I think a better test would have been to have each tested individually instead of having them on a single chain.
@jlindsay0709 Жыл бұрын
On top of it Josh from JHS makes the point that the part tolerances are going to be different. You can’t just make them sound the same by using the same the setting. This even goes comparing a real Klon to another real Klon. They are going sound different until you dial them in. A klon or now even a KTR are just collectors items. There is nothing mystical about the Klon. Talked with an electrician engineer and talked about Bill’s story about the rare Russian diodes that he has. He just started laughing at the whole idea. @j_freed4 жыл бұрын
I'm split on this, to me the Klon sounds way less buzzy and midrangey - compared to the copy it's more smooth and open with lusher harmonics. To my ear the copy sounds more 'stressed' and the dynamics are harsher, the transients are rougher. You can't EQ for original harmonic content, whether it's a pedal, a voice, or an acoustic guitar. You can fake together a mix to sound 'balanced in frequencies' but that is not the same as originating real timbre or harmonic content. All unicorn chasing with tone is obviously about harmonic content and dynamic response of amps, pedals, and guitars. People chase those rare Dumble amps -those amps were actually built for specific players so if you did find one for sale a particular old Dumble or 60s Vox AC30 or Bassman might not even be the right amp for your personal tone chasing goals and your playing. And rarer isn't better... it's fun to play in some funky little amp and get a sound out of it regardless. That concludes today's lesson.

Also remember that unless you are absolutely sure the volume output is the same, it’s not an apples to apples test. Volume matching is the trickiest part of all of this. That said, the Klon to my ear sounded better at all settings than the knock-off. But that Knock-off is pretty great for what it is. Makes me wonder if I would pay $100 for a Klone vs $29. The Klon seems more harmonically complex at lower volume, for example. But at the 3/4 knob positions there wasn’t as much difference for me. But again, the volume output of each and how it’s driving the preamp is also a factor. The Klon enclosure is a work of art all its own, and for me that makes it more valuable, just maybe not to the tune of 4K.

The copycat is the EXACT SAME CIRCUIT. The only difference in the sound is variations among components like the diodes. Even the original builder use to go through lots of diodes to get the sound he was looking for, but there is variation even among original Klons due to that. None of them sound better or worse, they are all just slightly different.

I think the greatest difference (to my ear at least) was on the "clean" test and when both the gain and treble were waaay up. Still though, way closer than I would have thought.

Always amazes me when someone cannot believe that two circuits that are identical sound the same :D
@GreatBurningNullifier4 жыл бұрын
LOL Are you implying that those two pedals sound the same??! Because they definitely don't.
@bernardosilva73064 жыл бұрын
@@GreatBurningNullifier No two analog pedals will EVER sound the same, even from the same company! Capacitors change overtime, imprecisions on the components can drastically affect the overall sound. POTs normally have a 20% margin of error alone! Do those two pedals sound the same? No. Do two original Klon pedals sound the same? No. Do they do the same "job"? Yes. Identical circuits are "almost" identical in sound, it is simple engineering. If you remove the "bias" of thinking that one "sound" is $5000 and the other is $30, some people will prefer one over the other and some will be the inverse (it is a matter of taste and margin of error on the circuit components).

Definitely a loss of detail and clarity in the knock-off pedal. It reminds me of the loss of detail when we used to make a cassette copy (this really ages me) of a vinyl record. The second generation analogue copy never had the same level of detail. But for $35 I would definitely buy one. In the end it boils down to one question-is the incremental improvement in sound worth $4,965 to you? Cheers and all the best for 2021
@django-unchained3 жыл бұрын
Yes a clear difference with the Chinese replica being more compressed and less overtone-shime. But the difference varies from settings. Very very interesting comparison. And the difference in most places is vague and up to the players fingers.

I completely agree, I hate when reviewers never demonstrate a CLEAN clean tone first (*cough* Chapman *cough*.) Yeah, I get it, this pedal is usually used to push an already breaking up amp into harder breakup, but we also want to hear what the pedal is doing to a CLEAN tone as well. Otherwise you are only demoing your amp and not the pedal.

@Luke Hill and others...Agreed. The differences are subtle, but "one dimensional" is an apt description for the cheaper one. It just feels like the expensive box has richer harmonic layering, particularly at the high end. I think the more important question regards production: If your mics, mic'ing, mix, or mastering suck, neither pedal is going to sound $5,000-awesome. If you can't properly capture and commit that sound then why bother with the price tag?
