If he's satisfied with the richness of the sound - than his search for rich perfect sound pedal is over ! It's very true that when you look at the value of the components used there is a huge profit margin. I find it funny when it says 'hand-wired' as a selling point because even the cheapest 'made in China' are hand-wired and soldered.
@j_freed
@j_freed 4 жыл бұрын
Sort of! That's saying very little though. You sometimes look at a 2% difference that makes a difference. It's like with guitars, doing a fully proper nut and fully worked frets etc. makes the guitar physically 99.8% the same as before, but those piddling minor differences can have a lot of leverage in the overall usefulness of the gear (playability and tone.) Small physical differences are amplified, literally. Obviously, there's a 'mass' market for players of guitars who settle, eg. who always use the raw and rough factory setup and never try a good guitar tech. Then there's another 'boutique' market for guys who want all their guitars spot on, want to try every overdrive and compression pedal etc. The cheap guys save money and they also support the majority market.
@gavinpearcey
@gavinpearcey 4 жыл бұрын
@@j_freed there's a big difference between pedals and proper guitar finishing. Properly levelling the frets and filing the but and setting the action aren't mass producible things. A circuit board with solder in components is. All of the fine work is done once in the circuit design. There is no special soldering technique or way to wire a pot to the board to make these comparible.

Actually if the circuit is the same and the components are the same then there's no difference between them. The little differences is due to capacitors tolerance (no capacitor can have an exact perfect value, but the value is in a little range around the target value) so the sum of all the caps imperfections gives to the pedal it's fingerprint. I mean, also two identical 5k pedals may sound a liiitle different

But they're not the same because the original Klon has a black gook that's put over the circuit boards to prevent ppl from doing precisely what you're saying. You can't see the circuits. That said- whoever made this one got really close by just listening it seems. There's a difference in the way they sound but- it's nowhere near the difference of what they cost. The problem is- now there are tons of Klon clones- how do I know if I'm getting this particular one?

@@couscousdude2991 Yeah- now they have software too that will analyze the circuit for you- you don't even have to see it. I ended up buying a 23-dollar Mosky clone that sounds so much like this 7G pedal if you close your eyes, it's really hard to tell the difference. The original is a tad brighter but, that's about it. JHS did an online test with the two and the guys actually picked the Mosky as the one that sounded best when they didn't know which was which. I think the tone he's achieving in this video that I like so much has more to do with the amp and guitar he's using than necessarily this pedal.

You need to do a blind AB test. You're playing harder on the Klon for starters. Also knob position will not equate - go by ear. Level was lower on smaller pedal with same knob position. I'm not sure there's any significant difference between the two.
@nicwilson89
@nicwilson89 2 жыл бұрын
Yea, the tolerance on component values will mean that you can not set the knobs to the same position and get exactly the same sound, it'd even still be slightly different if you cherry picked parts between two real klons, whether or not it'd be perceptible to the ear. You can use much more expensive .1% components but that's a massive waste of money and would lead to a massive build cost. Gotta play around with the knobs to find the same sorta sounds between the two

On top of it Josh from JHS makes the point that the part tolerances are going to be different. You can’t just make them sound the same by using the same the setting. This even goes comparing a real Klon to another real Klon. They are going sound different until you dial them in. A klon or now even a KTR are just collectors items. There is nothing mystical about the Klon. Talked with an electrician engineer and talked about Bill’s story about the rare Russian diodes that he has. He just started laughing at the whole idea. So the only great thing about a real Klon is the origin story you get to tell as a collector.

Good point. It's like anything, even identical twins are not the same. Everything a little different. I want to hear that on a big stage, then we'll know if these clones really cut the mustard or this is just some kind of trick from wish---maybe buy two of these clones and compare them to your klons, then compare the two clones against each other. let's see how well these Chinese manufacturers have this down to a science.

I'm split on this, to me the Klon sounds way less buzzy and midrangey - compared to the copy it's more smooth and open with lusher harmonics. To my ear the copy sounds more 'stressed' and the dynamics are harsher, the transients are rougher. You can't EQ for original harmonic content, whether it's a pedal, a voice, or an acoustic guitar. You can fake together a mix to sound 'balanced in frequencies' but that is not the same as originating real timbre or harmonic content. All unicorn chasing with tone is obviously about harmonic content and dynamic response of amps, pedals, and guitars. People chase those rare Dumble amps -those amps were actually built for specific players so if you did find one for sale a particular old Dumble or 60s Vox AC30 or Bassman might not even be the right amp for your personal tone chasing goals and your playing. And rarer isn't better... it's fun to play in some funky little amp and get a sound out of it regardless. That concludes today's lesson.

@@AAllinsonNN the breakup is about identical.within 99 percent accuracy. What Alex is referring to is slightly different frequency curves heard. But not really any differences in dynamics or characteristics of harmonics other than very microscopic variations in the timbre of the harmonics. Second, I found myself nearly salivating about owning a real one, it sounds so good. But the differences between it and the clone are so small, I could never spend $5k for the original. This is like when Andertons compared a $7,000 Les Paul against a $700 Epiphone. Was there a difference? Yes. Was it worth spending the extra $6,300? Not really, unless you're a rich rock star. We're so lucky to have so many smart, talented people on the web teaching. It's awesome when they're also hilarious, (see Greg Koch)! Thanks Tyler! And you may have a side career as a stunt double for John Leguizamo. You look like his younger brother.

Also remember that unless you are absolutely sure the volume output is the same, it’s not an apples to apples test. Volume matching is the trickiest part of all of this. That said, the Klon to my ear sounded better at all settings than the knock-off. But that Knock-off is pretty great for what it is. Makes me wonder if I would pay $100 for a Klone vs $29. The Klon seems more harmonically complex at lower volume, for example. But at the 3/4 knob positions there wasn’t as much difference for me. But again, the volume output of each and how it’s driving the preamp is also a factor. The Klon enclosure is a work of art all its own, and for me that makes it more valuable, just maybe not to the tune of 4K.
@Lantertronics
@Lantertronics 2 жыл бұрын
I think the original Klon had pots with custom tapers; if the clone isn't matching that exactly you'd get some variation. The germanium diodes are supposedly magic, but really the rest of it is just standard components. I suspect that if he had just cranked the volume on the clone a bit people wouldn't be able to tell which is which in a blind listening test.
