Hi! When I told my eye doctor that I use to take Lutein supplements from time to time, she told me that for young people it's not necessary and that I best eat more often blueberries. So, what do you think about the benefits of blueberries for the eyes?
@DoctorEyeHealth Жыл бұрын
Blueberries do have a lot of antioxidants and pigments which may be great for the body, but funny enough - beans have as much if not more antioxidant power than blueberries. I have seen no evidence for why they think lutein is only good for older individuals - possibly because of the AREDS studies, but new research on lutein and children show it to be just as beneficial. I do encourage people to eat whole foods first and consider supplements second, in most cases.

A longer answer to your question about whether my eye doctor has ever recommended lutein to me.... never. And usually no other habit or dietary recommendations. Granted, my last visit was before the pandemic (how insane is it that we get to say that to mark eras?). First, I have pretty substantial dry eye and constantly doing eye drops. I'm a glaucoma suspect because my grandpa had it but my dad doesn't. In my teens and 20s, I recall going to optometrists. Then, in my 30s, I started going to an ophthalmologist because my uncle who was an MD recommended it due to having the glaucoma suspect risk. With the ophthalmologist, the appointments were always rushed. Like, taking the time for questions was a strained effort. Granted, the office was stupid busy, and primarily an office that catered to ... more experienced patients. Doc's office tested my tears and definitely unhealthy, but nothing but regular or lubricating eyedrops were recommended. When I would ask about anything pertaining to my dry eye symptoms or "what should I be adding to my diet or avoiding", it was very much "nothing is proven to do this or that". Even talk of carrots and beta carotene felt like a shrug. I'm REALLY glad your channel exists and that you take substantial time to care and share. ❤ The benefits of lutein for my eyes is what I've been looking for. 👀 🤣 The benefits about cortisol and sleep is a major ➕️. Thank you! Keep at it!

Glaucoma is a chronic condition and while we have great medications and surgical options for treatment, we currently don't have a "cure" for it. Thankfully, many of the treatments are cost-effective and when managed well, most people never lose eyesight from glaucoma anymore. There are some studies showing that reducing stress from meditation has helped lower eye pressure when used as an adjunct treatment, However, I encourage you to keep taking your medications and follow up with your eye doctor as they recommend. One of the major causes of glaucoma getting worse is because people fail to follow up with their doctor. Hope this helps. Many blessings.

Love this question! Astaxanthin has been gaining some interest over the last 5 years or so for eye health. There are only a few studies on humans but it seems to have a role as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and helps prevent the degradation of nitric oxide - which can be potent at helping muscle relaxation and could potentially help with eye pressure (such as in cases of glaucoma) and may help with eye muscles relaxation too - helping with focus and eyestrain. I eat more Carrots than Bugs Bunny (Broccoli and Eggs too), and I've been taking a Lutein supplement for 5 years or more, so I'm disappointed that over the last year or so, I've suffered flashing lights and floaters in both eyes! I suspect PVD, which I believe is common at my age? (61) Looking through a cloud of floaters actually gets me down sometimes! I keep thinking I'm seeing flies! Incidentally, for a while I've been eating Pineapple too. I've also started eating Blueberries.

Keep eating well, as you have! AND reach out to your friends and family members when you’re starting to feel blue. Do N O T suffer in silence, marc … you DON’T have to go this alone!

Yes, floaters and PVD are common with age - still worth seeing a doctor to get things checked out if you haven't already. Sorry to hear that the floaters get you down sometimes, but I get it. Hopefully everything improves for you. Cheers my friend.

A good omega-3 supplement would be useful too. If you're feeling blue, take a walk in the morning sunlight and exercise. Family and friends are helpful too to lift your mood up.

I have really good eyes and am way over 50. No glasses, have never seen an eye doctor (but subscribe to you here for great knowledge and advice).I was very interested in your "ocular migraine" videos because I've had this sporadically since 4th grade. I notice dehydration plays into my episodes. (and stress). I've been taking spirulina tablets my entire life. I also take the Preservision Arreds formula (with lutein) and eat lots of blueberries and leafy greens. I wash my eyelids every night and also do occasional eye exercises. I have noticed that because of my job, I naturally look very closely at things (on phone or laptop), and then I'm focusing more long distance in all my travels. I think it's important to "stretch" the vision with different focus. Both of my parents needed glasses by age 40, so I know I'm doing the right things!

That's great to hear but also a good idea to go to the optometrist for yearly checkups since there are many slow progressing eye diseases that they could potentially catch before it's too late :)
@kkrolf2782 Жыл бұрын
@@FinnishTomatoI agree with your statement about the possibility of conditions creeping up on us. There seems to be a number of things the medical field has in its arsenal to delay full-blown vision loss IF a condition is diagnosed early; just far too few things they can do once a condition gets too far advanced.
@kkrolf2782 Жыл бұрын
Congrats!! I’ve had to wear glasses since the 3rd grade, and was told I probably needed them even before that. NOW, because of general conditions related to atopic dermatitis, some days my vision wasn’t even helped by them, as I also have had s e v e r e Dry Eye Syndrome / Meibomium Gland Disfunction. THANK HEAVEN ABOVE, I found LIPIFLOW Treatments to help forestall the major corneal scarring which had begun due to my eyes’ lack of oil film !! I urge ANY- and EVERYONE who has experienced even occasional dry eyes, to get evaluated!! Your eye balls may be capable of fantastic vision, but if the covering over them is flawed in ANY way, it WILL impact your life - in THE most horrific of ways!!! Once the meibomium glands atrophy (dry up, close down, seal shut), there’s NO BRINGING THEM BACK!

Great to hear all of this! Thanks for subscribing and leaving comments - as that does help the channel 🙏🙏 There is some truth to "stretching" the accommodative muscles - they can help improve eye muscle coordination and help delay the onset of presbyopia to a degree (ultimately it still sets in though). For some people, as they age, the pupil gets small and helps improve the range of focus - I wonder if you did get in to see an eye doc, if you would be slightly nearsighted (which would also help explain whey you can still see well up close despite being over 50. ) Either way - Happy to hear you are doing well and yes, I do encourage you to get your eyes checked even if you are doing great and taking care of yourself so well. Cheers.

I would love to get your take on maqui berry extract for dry eye. I recently read an article stating maqui berry extract can dramatically boost natural tear production.
@DoctorEyeHealth Жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking! I read a few studies on this and they appear to help with tear production - suggesting the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect of the berry helps with tear production and ocular surface healing. However, these were pretty small studies (less than 30 participants). I am not fully aware of the health risks of taking the berry or the clinical significance of eating it fresh vs supplementation but its interesting nonetheless.

Is it effective to take a lutein supplement with a full meal? Seems like that would aid absorption if there's fat in it.

Hi doc, thank you for sharing your knowledge. I’ve been wondering whether you need to replace sunglasses/whether they lose efficacy with time? Thank you for your time!
@DoctorEyeHealth Жыл бұрын
Interesting question! but no, the UV protection from sunglasses usually comes from the lens material itself. So it shouldn't need to be replaced. Some eye clinics do have UV meters to test sunglasses - so perhaps you could find a place and have it checked?

@@DoctorEyeHealth thank you so much for replying. A dermatologist here on KZbin recommended buying new sunglasses every two years, so that’s where the question came from. Have a nice day!

Can a Yag laser treatment for floaters cause a retina to tear. Can Laser treatment for floaters damage the back of a cataract lens? I had a floater problem and my doc used a laser to help me with the problem. A few weeks later I experienced a couple huge black dots, followed by an eclipse coming over a third of my eye. the doc led me to believe it was a blood clot and that I lost my right eye. Since then, I learned it was actually a retina tear which was untreated for 9 months as I thought I lost my eye. Now I have 1/3rd light penetration and very blurred vision in the right eye. I watched one of your videos and i thought you said that the laser could damage the lens. I'm hoping that I might regain some sight by replacing the lens. I'm taking eye vitamins with lutein.

Watching a nature documentary some time back, it showed a bear selecting the eyes and brains of salmon before wholly discarding the rest. Porridge was not a mainstay of this chap's diet. I bet they know something we don't. I'd wager the roe is not to be sniffed at either. Downstream scavengers are really onto a winner there.

"Hi, I am an albino person. I have albinism in my eyes, which means there is a lack of pigment or melanin in my eyes. As a result, extra light enters my eyes and is reflected and scattered. My doctor prescribed color contact lenses to restrict this unwanted extra light. Now, there are many types of contact lenses available in the market, and I am getting confused about which one to choose for the best results. Can you help me choose the perfect contact lenses for my case?"

I have severe astigmatism. I’m far sighted. I can’t see things upclose. I see farther away. I also was born with a severely turned in eye. I had surgery at 4 to fix the muscles in my eyes. Just here recently my sight has gone down hill. I have to wear glasses 24/7. I WISH I could do contacts, i just don’t do well getting them in and out. I want to get LASIKs but due to the symptoms above, I’ve been told it’s not an option for me. Could you explain why LASIK doesn’t work for some??
@DoctorEyeHealth Жыл бұрын
Sure. Lasik is best for people who are nearsighted - it can help with farsightedness to a degree but it doesn't have as good of results as for nearsightedness. In addition to this, if someone has amblyopia - from a turned eye, for example. Then Lasik is unlikely to help with this anyway. Another option that does exist, although not everyone may be great candidates for it, and that it may be relatively expensive, would be to consider a refractive lens exchange. (essentially cataract surgery but done before a cataract develops). Many of the new implants for this procedure can correct the high glasses prescription and may even be able to help restore some near vision. Hope this helps! thanks for the great question.

@@DoctorEyeHealth wow, thank you for responding. I will definitely research refractive lenses. Thanks, again!
