I spoke with somebody in a bar in Funchal and he explained that wages are very low in Madeira, plus the current situation around the world has really hit tourism there. Though wages are higher in the UK the cost of living is also very high so I understand why you say you would be poorer when you go back home. Happy to hear that it sounds like you are enjoying your time here though despite the current worldwide situation. The UK also has some great places to visit as long as you can deal with the weather. Personally, I prefer the warm and sunny weather in Madeira.

Ronny Rachow I mainly used the Rother walking guide because they have detailed descriptions of the hikes and when Googling you find a lot of hiking sites. I don't remember which ones I used. I just googled "hiking madeira" plus terms like "waterfall" to find hikes I would like...
