Speaking as Canadian military veteran, I don’t know many soldiers on a soldier salary that can afford Fallkniven and Extrema Ratio and TRC. Lol. For a soldier, price definitely needs to be factored in.

If I were in the military, I would choose the Jakkari puuko 140mm. It will kill, it's super tough and can be used to pry open whatever, includes a great sheath and importantly is inexpensive enough to use and not be concerned about it which is pretty important for a knife you want to use for a variety of situations. These are great knives but what soldier would readily pry open something or use it as a screwdriver? I wouldn't even if it might be better at it.

It’s called saving up…I’m on an average salary but have a bunch of custom and semi custom knives. I don’t buy a knife every week or month but I save up and pool my birthday/Christmas money and get 2-3 knives I really want. If you want something enough you’ll save up for it.

@MRWKFClark So So. After boot camp my monthly salary was 328$ a month. As a grunt, it's not always easy to save up. Such as "Hinderers" remake Ka-Bar, it's disappointing to see them crap on Marines with a 600$ plus price tag. Many knife companies manufacture a "Purpose Built" knife without ever considering the application group that will implement it. And shows how the Company could care less about the end user. The reason the SOG Seal Pup is so popular is because it's cheap, tough, and can be replaced easy. Many military personnel will never buy a premium knife to be used in the field because they can't afford to replace it. I used a BRK Bravo 1 in service, still have it to this day. The only reason I have it was because it's issued to all recon marines after graduation. It will never happen, but it would be nice to see folks refuse to buy knives that are insanely overpriced. As in the hinderer KaBar, about 30$ in materials, yet 600$ plus. I understand capitalism, materials, build, r&d, overhead, etc. But they try to pay everything off with each knife made. They've forgotten who got them popular and in business. They don't respect the customer anymore

I served as an Airborne Trooper during 3 wars....if I needed a big blade for my LBE, I think I would go SRK. Tough, easy to sharpen, easy to care for, not too expensive so if I lose it, Im not gonna cry over it. Also, war blades really need to be tough. Sometimes, you need to be able to beat that blade into and through something like a car trunk lid, a 55gallon drum, or a electrical panel box. Yes, I know this first hand. Also, you really need something like a LEATHERMAN tool. You need those pliers and wire cutters. You need screw drivers and small pry bars. Taking care of a belt fed MG is real work. If you are going into a jungle/tropical environment, carry a 18-24" machete. Forested area = saw.

Agreed. I had the same experience. At least 95% of tasks could be handled with a multi tool or Swiss army knife. For much of the rest a mora knife would probably suffice. However, we had logistical support with access to supplies, including tools, most of the time. A more serious, but not too heavy, knife would be necessary for survival situations and in the field when support and logistics are not available. Suitable tools like axes, saws or pry bars might not always be available when you need to pry things open, improve your cover and/or concealment, or split firewood to keep warm.

I heard the marines now think its kinda silly to see people with a kabar as that what new marines more often do. I still think they are fine though besides being a little weak on the handle. For the medium knife I would go cold steel recon tanto since it was cheap when I got it though I would not claim its handle is stronger.

Easy. 1)Cold Steel SRK or Recon Tanto because they're very tough, cheap & relatively light. 2) A quality multi tool with weapon specific tools. 3) A light hatchet. In the 90's I bought a Gerber hatchet with a hollow polymer handle. Its very light & takes abuse from trenching & making doors where there wasn't one. A top tool.

Hehemmm 🧐 The category you guys are missing is in fact "disposable knives with an expensive custom Kydex sheath". Think of it like rifle magazines where you don't necessarily want to leave them them behind but there's no skin off your back if you do. Without concern each individual knife can be dulled and swapped out for a freshy, used improperly, severely damaged, given away, stolen, lost or left behind in the field ORRRRR left behind in an... object->💀 in the field 😉 and can easily be replenished if the whole hord gets used up. My pick would be about half a Dozen Cold Steel Tanto Lite knives paird a custom custom sheath for secure carry (there are a few online currently). And although the cutting edge is not prominant from the handle I have found it makes for a great food slicer and chopper.

In my humble opinion, the VARUSTELEKA JÄÄKÄRIPUUKKO 110 or 140 are, again in my opinion, the best utility knife for pretty much any of the aforementioned contexts, the SKRAMA SEAX is also one of the best "big knives" for its price. The 80CRV2 is an extremely tough steel with very good edge retention whilst still being easily maintained in the field, as long as it is kept oiled to prevent rust. The cost of Varusteleka’s knives are low enough to be easily obtained and they have a comfortable grip for most people and is made from a durable material.

US Iraq combat vet here. So, most of us carried 1 or 2 knives on mission or patrol. 1: a good folder. Small, light, and used for good utility. We didn't need to carve wood, but we needed to cut things open like mre boxes or cut cord, etc. 2: When on a sweaty mission, we may also carry a good fixed blade. This would be carried with a tactical purpose like self-defense or more survival type tasks in mind. The fixed blade wasn't an overly large, heavy knife. It was as compact and light as could possibly be while still being able to perform the required tasks. Such as the benchmade nimravus 140bk with a sheath, and we would wrap the handle with paracord. There are several that would work just as good, but this one specifically was more of a fad. But it handled the task.

I completely agree, I actually preferred and still do carry the Spyderco Matriarch full serrated blade with the Emerson wave open. Not only is it one hand no sight needed operation to open and close but it is super easy and fast to sharpen, this knife also holds an edge far longer and it is truly a brutal combat weapon. Real estate on web gear and plate carriers is way to valuable for big heavy clumsy knives; may look good in the movies but not in the theatre of war. A 4 inch blade will pass through every vital organ and muscle in the body so big blades are not necessary. I don't recommend super steels that are difficult to sharpen either, S30V, VG10 and D2 are excellent combat knives. Btw, I never once made or even thought in my wildest dreams to make an open fire, lol. In todays high tech world I would recommend that people save their money on a knife and invest in good quality IR cloaking personal tarps and poncho's to hide from thermal scopes and drones which are a huge threat. Blessings

As a non military person with no experience in it either, I would say 5 knives is way overkill right from the jump. Best jack of all trades fixed blade that you can beat the hell out of and a multitool would do the trick. I would probably have a folder as well but thats it. There are many nicer knives and tools but I would be perfectly fine with my Esee 6, Leatherman Rebar, and Recon 1.

So one thing that to me makes no sense in this is you do not pick a military knife based on if you can use it with a fire steel or if it can process wood. If you are on active deployment in the field you are generally not building fires or processing wood (particularly with a knife). Fires give your position away really well. The only time such might be useful is if you are shot down, but then you don't want to be building fires anyways so that the enemy does not find and kill/capture you. Also super steel knives are not the greatest idea as you need a proper stone to be able to sharpen them. You want something that is tough and dependable and can be used for any kind of stupid job, and you might have to fight with it too, and preferably not cost a lot as knives are not very difficult to lose (or break doing stupid jobs with it).

After last few years, one would think that europeans would get resistant to fearmongering. The purpose of it is to make population more agreeing to changes like higher taxes, worse living conditions and limiting personal freedoms. Im polish, and i can assure you the enemy is not going to come from the east in ushankas and pepeshas, the enemy is already here, and was here for a very long time. When someone offers you an amazing opportunity to stop living in random dirt trench due to drone attack in some financiers war, politely decline and say they can go do it alone. Also, remind americans they are bordering dem ruskies via Bering strait, not through continental europe.

Its just a pride thing but they fail in the same places and evils. Americans are not going to war with Russia. The democrats really did a disservice getting people to quit peace talks. But they do disservices all the time though so thats nothing new. Ill just wisper it to you though. the war is lost. At least a good chunk of us knew those abrams tanks would be in a russian victory parade. half of congress sent aid knowing the war was not winnable and just let it through to keep the government funded until the next president came.

I was Marine Corps Infantryman for 6 years, I am still a student like you all and conflict has changed for the infantryman. One thing that was essential was weight savings. Regardless of your personal gear your individual fighting load, assault and sustainment load had to have the bear minimum. For most NATO armies that is 7 mags, 2 frags, IFAK, water source, admin, headlamp plus your mission dictates your assault + sustainment load so it is not uncommon for soldiers to carry more than 1/3 of their body weight when stepping off from an object rally point. This incentivized to avoid large knives or unnecessary tools, most guys carried a multitool of some sort. The more I learn from Ukraine is that the Ukrainian defenders have not be able to enjoy a reliable supply train like Americans and Nato forces have for the majority of the GWOT. So I can see the utility of having small-medium general purpose fixed blade knife for building fighting positions, digging quickly to make exploit micro terrain, these tools can help process food quicker which may not seem important but if your friends need to eat and military rations are not available you might need to live and prepare food of the economy. The whole time I was watching this I was thinking a Terava puuko 140 knife would be a economical solution for a young soldier that they could safely abuse.

Indeed, good choice. Nice and light. Keeping it light is now more important than ever, again as we see in Ukraine. Reason is so you can more easily run duck and dive away from drones. And NO, I am not making light of it, I am very serious. I'm half Ukrainian with family and friends there. I'm the last person that would make a joke of it. It's just the reality of today's warfare which is heavily dependent on cheap drones (on all sides). Stay light and work on stamina and cardio.

Happy new year! On the topic I would say judging from ukraine, lots of soldiers are having to build dugouts and trenches (lots of wood chopping) themselves so maybe having a good hatchet that is carried in your ruck but left at your position during assaults and a small, light 4 inch knife such as my fav (acta non verbal p200 😂) that's still usable for bushcraft but also a good general use and fighting knife would be ideal for me personally. As saving weight where u can to make carrying around your mission essential gear is very important to not fatigue you since most of knife use would be cutting cord and opening food.

Happy new year! Hopefully things don’t escalate over there. Serving in U.S. Marines there was no need for any kitchen knife when all you ate were MRE’s. Multi tool is great. I had a small pair of needle nose pliers in my first aide kit and a Victorianox. Of course I had the one with the Phillips head and no corkscrew in areas where we could get or trade for bottles of wine. Had a large pocket folder, SOG Tomcat at the time, primary knife was a Buckmaster on Right hip, please don’t laugh, no one knew any better back then. Would have my Fallkniven A1x now. Finally had a British Commando dagger tucked away on the left side of my pistol belt so if holding the grip of my rifle in Right hand it could be drawn easily in a reverse grip with my left hand and could hopefully penetrate an enemies gear or some soft armor. I have broken at least two Ka-bars and was carrying the M203 grenade launcher so I didn’t get issued a bayonet. I was also in a unit that allowed personal knives, a lot didn’t. My lieutenant made fun of my knives all the time especially the commando dagger, he knew I watched too many WW2 films.

All choices seem good, you could also easily replace them. It doesn't have to be a heavy brick of a blade, and trust me weight will be a factor, especially if we're talking War, Combat, defense against man or beast, etc.. the faster you can get your knife out and stab & slice the better, the Cold Steel SRK in CPM3V would be one of my picks for sure, the Demko Armiger 4 would be good for smaller chores or a backup blade. A good Machete would be very useful too. The CS Recon Scout in CPM3V would be a great choice for all around everything in a Survival or Combat scenario. You could go on all day, several good choices imo.

My two cents: I do like carrying more tools than most, but not in war. *I think that in addition to the multitool, you want a stout, 4-6" knife with a stabby tip. And you can argue for carrying a backup to that one.* That's if it's war. I don't see the point of carrying the weight of a delicate kitchen slicer. That's wasted weight. It just reduces the amount of ammunition or water that you could be carrying. A thin slicer is not wasted weight for a camper/hiker who will prepare food. Unless you intend to fight with a knife( EG: Kukri), to carry around a big, heavy knife longer than 6" for very infrequent use won't be worth the weight cost.

Since weight is everything: 1. Fällkniven Modern Bowie; 2. Victorinox Swiss Tool MX with the ratchet accessory; 3. Kid sized metal shovel with a shortened handle (like the ones they use at bothies in the UK). The MB replaces both saw and hatchet, lowering total weight. The MX has a one-handed opening knife while it still has all the other tools. You can repair (metal) gear (screws, wood, etc.) with the MX, while you can do camp tasks (shelter building, fire making, cooking) with the MB. The shortened shovel is lighter weight than the NATO stuff, but doesn’t unscrew and doesn’t have rough edges. It weighs around 0,5 kg, while the foldable shovels weigh around 1 kg. All together you would be looking at around 1,3 kg of weight. Heavy, but manageable.

Hand gun bayonette is a little more reasonable. Knife tied to stick. Atached to helmet like a rino. I would not want a knife on the ground far away easy to lose and mess with walking. Most come with an attachment to belts anyways.

Personally, I wouldn't use a clean blade or one with a polished or mirror finish. I would use something more sober so that it doesn't generate reflections or something similar. The Glock knife seems like a good option to me.

I don’t have a specific military knowledge nor experience, and I hope I never have to have it. But as a person who had to live in the forest for months at a time, I know that an axe and a larger Swiss Army knife is all you need. Now, for a war scenario I would change that combo for a purpose built military knife like a Peltonen M95 and a multitool. Maybe I would also add a very light and clean razor sharp folder with a partly serrated blade as a backup.

With my experience, I went to the same conclusion as many others allready wrote down. Always with me are: 1: Multitool: Victorinox Swiss Tool MXBS or Leathermen MUT or ARC 2: Pocket knife: Victorinox Swiss Soldier's Knife 08 or Ranger 55 Grip Onyx Black if you like the vine opener :) Depending the missions I did: 1: If wet and a lot of lying around: Big stainless steel folder on Vest: Fox TRAKER MESKWAKI or Extrema Ratio Rao 2 2: If more of a breaching job: Ka-Bar Becker Tac Tool or Extrema Ratio FULCRUM DESERT WARFARE if less intense 3: Always in Backpack: Saw Silky Pocketboy Outback Edition 4: Always in Backpack: Showel Bundeswehr Dreifach-klappspaten 5: If you know that you won't have to be quite and can cut trees with violence: switching out number 2 with a Terävä Scrama 240 in the backpack, just for fun (Yes, the military can sometimes be fun) In the army, there are usually two rules. If you still have all your gear, it wasn't lost or stolen yet. If you miss some gear, you either lost it or somebody borrowed it for an indefinite amount of time Therefor, all the knives you take with you, you have to accept the fact that you might either loose it, break it or that somebody will "borrow" it. Where I am, I don't need to be able to scratch firesteel that often. I usually had to break stuff or dig holes or cut things. Or Lay around for days... If I need to scratch some firesteel, I use the metal strip sold with it, or the blade or the multitool. Or a lighter :) I had to resharpen my every day knives a ton of times, because it's the stuff you use the most. The weight is not really an issue, because the backpacks end up weighting between 40 kg to 70 kg.... But if you can manage to keep the weight low, like with you own ceramic/PE ballistic plates, own lightweight Sleeping bag and sleeping bag goretex cover, you win a lot of weight, space and confort. Knives are tools and spending a lot of money on them doesn't make sens, if you only use them as tools that can break. But if you are a knife entousiast like me, it's sometimes pleaseful to have some nice gear. At the end, everything works, as long as you are prepared to use them. But If I had to choose knives will always carry with me, it would be: 1: Victorinox Swiss Tool MXBS Multitool 2: Victorinox Swiss Soldier's Knife 08 3: Terävä Scrama 240 or 200 4: A Fällkniven DC4 sharpening stone I would however spend more money on some quality Backpack, some robust Camelbak, a really good sleeping bag, gore-tex sleeping cover and sleeping mat. If your back hurts, you won't last long. If you can sleep well, you won't last long. If you can't keep warm, you won't last long. And If you have no water left, It's won't take long either. But this isn't a big of an issue in Europe These are my two cents :)

HMK Scalpel (EDC neck knife for all small tasks) 3. Bark River Bravo 1 (can do everything) 4. Benchmade Hidden Canyon Hunter STE-15017-1 (hunting / skinning) 5. Granfors Forest Axe - or the Silky Gomboy 270 (if it has to be a knife it would be the Skrama 240 for wood processing) I kind of feel like a Multitool is missing but I'm not sure what to exchange for it (if I'd had to, it would probably go in place of the 4) :)

It's extremely rare for a knife-on-knife combat scenario where a bigger knife might have an advantage between two equal opponents. So, ask yourself what's the likelihood that you'll end up in close-quarters battle (CQB)? If you expect to have to fight with the knife, that's going to color what knife you choose. For fighting, the style of knife you choose MUST align with your training and situation. As an example, if you've never trained with a karambit, then it's a terrible choice regardless of how cool it looks. If you expect to need to fight someone in a very confined space or from being surprised, a Clench Pick, MDV Plus One, or TDI are good choices. If you expect to need a fighting knife that you don't need to drop to use a firearm, then the MDV Plus One or fixed blade Adamas are good choices. An important factor for any combat knife is speed of deployment. If you've never trained with a knife, then you will likely be incapable of fighting a skilled opponent. The mental side of being able to defend yourself cannot be overstated. All that said, relatively low cost, easy, care, and high durability are critical to selection.

If your useing a fighting knife you probably don't have a firearm. Katanas start at 60 dollars in 1060 and 1095 are hugely better unless your afraid of a little rust and it comeing with small defects in its look. If a knife require a martial art to be effective at all its probably not a good one for the job. The effectiveness of little knifes for slashing is highly questionable.

Varusteleka Jaakaripuuko 140 or Peltonen M95 Ranger as high self-reliance well-proven, rugged 'fieldknife' with bushcraft lineage. Taking Skrama 240 in the overall selection is a good idea in terms of versatility and dependability in self-reliance scenarios.... however, load out and size are considerations. Like a small machete, a Bushcraft tool such as Skrama size/type concerning, self-defense, intimidation factors (even in untrained hands), and transitioning bush use to deterent to melee weapon could prove game changingly allround useful. Especially when considering maybe in your country, firearms, ammunition, archery equipment etc. are not nearly as commonplace like here in Alaska. In 'fieldknife' class with mostly bushcraft leaning lineage... also consider the Mora Garberg (tho' it lacks guarding). In more strict terms of 'fieldknife'... knives such as Gerber StrongArm and Cold Steel SRK should not be overlooked. You guys mentioned, why not a daggar? Same could go for karambit, kukri, amoung others... That said, I do feel the Glock knife should have a place in your bag as a wartime expedient (after you have reprofiled/ sharpened). Having Multitool or SAK makes reasonable sensibility. If running a folder... I would go overbuilt/oversized, insist on TriadLock, and not care too much about steel type (ie. ColdSteel SR1, Spartan, etc.). As far as smaller fixed blades go... my recommedations would be paring knives or deckhand knives in the sort of bird and trout processing or veggie slicing knives category. I wager you guys with good intent, got too hung up on nice expensive knives you have in collection, steel selection, edge type, and perhaps special usage. One aspect you could have covered quite a bit better was how you are going to carry whatever you're carrying. I do agree with having one of your five knives being the one you really like and cherish as a morale booster. However, this is perhaps not so good a mindset going into any sort of battle preparedness mindset. Good stuff and things to think about. Happy New Year DBK guys!

As recon/attack helicopter pilots facing a downed aircraft survival and evasion scenario, We were issued Gerber LMF II’s (which for us was a variant called the ASEK). I recall seeing quite a few Gerber Strongarms here or there as well. Some bought ESEE or others with their own funds to carry instead of the LMF II. My first deployment, I had the ASEK but also a handmade knife given to me as a gift in a poor fitting leather sheath. I carried it everywhere all of the time. It was not large and earned every ounce of personal value to it, which is what you call your “treasure knife” here. It’s not the greatest at virtually anything, but it’s still coming with me. Next deployment it was one of the first things I packed, and so on. Now that I’m out and have gained a lot of knife and steel knowledge, I will profess my love of TRC. My Mille Cuori is a prized possession, as is their Apocalypse model. One thing to consider in all of this which I may have missed you covering is weight and mobility. If shit is getting spicy, and especially if you’re on foot, you’ll likely not have a sack full of knives weighing you down in all reality. Four knives, which includes a multitool such as a Leatherman because the Gerbers feel cheap in comparison, that’s like the max-maximum-max I could conceivably support, personally And, aside from your multitool and “treasure” knife, those other two would need to be incredibly robust and useful for the gamut of all things being encountered in a bombed out town, evading and surviving in both urban and the woods, etc. Talking through that, I’m at: 1) Mille Cuori 2) Leatherman 3) “Treasure knife” (morale boost is a thing, so long as this knife isn’t overly cumbersome) 4) TRC This is Freedom, a small Bushcrafter as you mentioned, something along those lines like the smaller ones you put on the table. Finally. Y’all kick ass and please keep up the great work!
