I love my FZ/MT-07. I grew up riding dirt bikes and have a CR250 2 stroke which is much more of a handful. The MT has a good balance of power, plenty to have fun but not a ridiculous amount. For low speed maneuvers it's very easy to control and feels very agile. The throttle is also very easy to control. It's also a blast to take through Mt. Lemmon!

Personally I would say dont start with a 650ish unless you have taken the beginner rider course or ridden dirt bikes first. I think for most folks who can drive stick they'll be okay but they're happy to throw the tire up if you dump the clutch. That said took my friends mt07 for a ride (which has an R6 throttle tube for a snappier response) coming from the mt09 I was surprised at how strong it felt in the low and mid range. It's a sporty little fella around town and on back roads.

I have a Honda CB500F and totally love it. There don't seem to be a lot other people having this bike so its more or less pretty unique. Also the slipper clutch is pretty good, it helps when you let go of the clutch completely but the engine isn't reving at the right speed, then it will slip the clutch a little more so it doesn't skit or jerk really hard. Most of the time though its no noticeable.

We had the Kawasaki Z650 in my riding school (2018's & 2019's), and I actually found them quite unpleasant. The throttle on all three of them seemed really twitchy to me, compared to other bikes of roughly the same size, engine size and power that I tried around the same time when looking for a bike for myself. They also had weird "blind spots" in the power band where at a given speed, say 40 km/h, third gear would rev the hell out of the engine, while fourth gear would have it sputtering and almost stalling. I'm sure they're actually good bikes, but they did not work very well for me for learning. Other than that I agree with this list! Love the MT-07! A friend of mine got one last year, and he's been riding for a good 40 years, so it's not JUST for beginners!

I agree with this. The Z650 is so twitchy for beginners. I'm a beginner myself and just rode on this for hours last week. I do not recommend it at all as a starter bike. The sudden rev when switching gears threw me off a lot.

I think from the Kawasaki side, the Z400 is also a good option as well for a starter bike. Has enough power for all basic riding needs and room for growth without the extra weight on the Z650. I tried sitting on the CB500F mentioned and the Z400 among CB300R and the Z400 is also lower that the CB’s for height. I was almost able to fully flat foot the Z400 while the CB range had me on the balls of my feet. Granted I didn’t wear riding boots when sitting on them and I’m 5’7, buck 35 in weight. But the Z400 definitely feels very comfortable and will be my first bike.

Tony Cornea It’s a Ninja with better ergo, maybe not as great on wind protection at high speeds. But I’m not pushing over 90 much, 85 tops majority of the time. But absolutely love it on the streets. Freeway is ok, but also probably due to my physical ability to handle it while battling stage 4 cancer. So I prefer 65 range and lower for general comfort. You do need to stand on the pegs a little on bumps, it’s pretty harsh on your butt if you don’t adjust for the shock.

@@christopherm7741 I am same height and 75kgs, and asked above regarding the z400 or z650 for starters. I would say you answered pretty thoroughly. The question that I would ask, is, isn't the extra power on the z650 the necessary to do mountains, highways and pillion without a constant buzz from a small engine and low torque? All the best with your battle man. You are a warrior. Thanks.

Riding for 50 years. History of racing professional flat track and Motorcross. I think 650’s are too powerful as a beginner bike. My favorite beginner to intermediate is the Duke 390. ABS is standard( required by Euro 4 in Europe), LED headlight, Driving modes, TFT dash and it looks like its big brother, Super Duke! I like the Ducati Scambler 62(400 cc) for another premium name bike.

People saying 600 cc bikes are beginners and good for city and inter state but In India even 250cc and above are big bikes. We ride our 200cc sport tourers across the states to the other end of the country on scooters to 200cc bikes and we feel how reliable and capable they are. Only rich people ride 600 ccs here. The biking worlds of India and Western or European countries are an entire spectrum apart...lol. Our gas is very costly too so we ride 200cc sport tourers as our sport and commuter bikes which give good mileage and are sufficiently fast to satisfy our speed thirst maxing out at 150-190kph

Dan, you kind of hinted at this but I'll make it explicit. With the possible exception of the Grom, these are good 'bikes for beginners but they are not _only_ for beginners. I've been riding for nearly 20 years and I love my 2017 CB500F - it does everything from commuting, scratching through mountain hairpins, to iron butt motorway journeys, all year round. It needed a little bit of tweaking with add-ons (e.g. an Airhawk seat for those iron butt trips, a topbox and/or panniers for touring and carrying groceries home from the supermarket, Barkbusters Blizzard hand-guards to take the edge off in winter) but with those it's all the 'bike you'll ever need for road use. I suspect the others are similar... well, the Suzuki and the Kawasaki anyway - not sure how practical the MT-07 is! If money is an issue (and for most people it is), getting a 'beginner' 'bike that you'll be able to live with for years is a very good investment.

Grimbeard Hi, i have been looking at the CB500F too. I really love it but i’m not sure it fits me (I’m 6’2) I sat on one in the store but could really tell if it was ok or not. I did’nt want to have a test ride because i just got my license. What do you think?
@Grim_Beard
@Grim_Beard 4 жыл бұрын
@@TravelingTom1 To be honest, I'd suggest taking (more) classes until you feel competent and confident enough to take a test ride before buying any 'bike. It's a lot of money to spend, after all. Re. the 'bike itself, at your height you might find the CB500X more comfortable. Same engine, different styling and it's taller. I've had one for a day while my CB500F was being serviced and it was good but a bit high for me (at 5' 10") but might suit your height.
@Grim_Beard
@Grim_Beard 4 жыл бұрын
@@TravelingTom1 P.S. If you find that you prefer the F to the X, you could look into making some adjustments to fit you better. For example, see if anyone (reputable) makes adjustable footpegs if your legs feel cramped.

From someone who has owned an FZ-07 since 2016 please reconsider purchasing a naked bike. They are miserable bikes in situations outside of around town riding, and if you are like me there are times where you have to get on the highway. Those short stints on the highway feel much longer than they really are on a naked because you're busy fighting the wind. Get a bike with fairings if you think you are ever going to need to use it on the highway and thank me later. PS. Fairings help in cold weather and if you want to keep riding into the fall or start riding in early spring a bike that is built to protect you from the wind is going to make life much better.

I rarely dissagree with DoubleDan, but the Suzuki SV650 is a true thoroughbred. It´s very good for fast riding and very popular as a trackbike. The engine gives an outstanding midrange and you can easily hold the pace of bikes with 100hp+. It´s not a beginner bike. Basic rule: get something lightweight with not much power as your fist bike, two wheels are enough to have tons of fun. Cheers!

@@sebastianrex8856 the Mt-07 is my first bike and i have never had an issue riding it. the power is very smooth so it will not take off unexpectedly but is still powerful enough that you will never need more driving on the street. I would guess that being 6'2 you would be very comfortable on the bike but i would still go to the dealership and at least sit on it before you make a decision. The Kawasaki Z-650, Honda CB-650f and Suzuki SV-650 are all very comparable bikes. I would sit on all of them and see which fits you best. How can you say that there is not going to be any group rides when a bunch of motorcyclist get together they have a tendency of riding together especially if they show up on bikes. Whether they have a sanctioned ride or not. The best you can do is recommend keeping proper following distances and driving within personal limits. In fact you should probably do a video on group riding safety for it is likely going to happen.

Dealers call it ADM, which means Additional Dealer Markup. It’s definitely negotiable. Always ask for a breakdown of the price and if the ADM seems high and they won’t reduce it, just walk out. I have done it several times until one of the dealers at visit comes down to a reasonable ADM.

Any ideas on ADV bikes for beginners? Living in Wyoming, we have a lot of gravel roads. Is the BMW G310GS a good beginner bike?
@lawrencemonro2568
@lawrencemonro2568 4 жыл бұрын
The 310GS is based on the 310R, just with a larger front wheel and suspension. I have the 310r and I couldn't ask for a friendlier, sportier, comfortable bike to grow into. These BMW's are known as a forgiving bike to ride and learn (I did my first track day 4mths into my license and I got a comment from riders to say I was so smooth!). Even the R version off-road is nice and smooth. Definitely keep it on your shortlist, if you are on the taller side think about the KTM 390 ADV it's got front fork protection, bigger fuel tank and the engine is more capable

I am 1.74 and 75kgs and really wonder whether to start on the z400 to then upgrade to Versys 650 my dream bike (for now, Versys 1000 is a better dream ;p ). Going to Z650 and then just adding 30kgs on the same engine to go to Versys, I think would be a let down. But would the Z400 feel ok in highway and mountains to start with, or should I trust Danthe Fireman with Z650, as I feel I should? Commuting will be 90% of the use for sure.
