Hog nose are a great introductory snake, because of their personality. When I was wee, my dad swerved to avoid something, and pulled over. He had me get out with him and come meet the gopher snake. “Let’s talk about North American colubrids!” Yes, please. A whole video on them. There’s so much beautiful variety among them. You have garter snakes, king snakes, corn and rat snakes, bull snakes, plus crazy stuff like indigos, and some that you don’t see as much like smooth green snakes and the teeeeny tiny little ring-necked snakes. A lot of them don’t get nearly as much love as pythons and boas, and I think that’s a shame, since many of them are outgoing and have pretty moderate care requirements.

I adore garter snakes and have several living wild on my property (I have a habitat set up specifically for them). Probably my favorite snake, though, is a close relative of the garter snake, the lined snake (Tropidoclonion lineatum). They make lousy pets because they’re nocturnal and fossorial, but they don’t bite and I’ve never been musked by one. DeKay’s Brown snakes look similar, but they are grumpy, nervous and bitey like their watersnake cousins. My favorite pet snake was a black ratsnake that I caught as a hatchling and kept for years.

Species is big when looking for friendly snakes. You also have to meet any snake you want to buy. I have met mean ball pythons, I have a Boa that loves to be around people, Tyler Nolan has a king cobra that gives kisses. Every snake has it's own personality. Some pythons just ball up or wrap up on you and go to sleep, others are interested in socializing, they stay active and curious the whole time they are out. Some pythons are grumps and bite people. Same with Boas.
@CrimFerret2 жыл бұрын
Based on personal experience, I'd have to include gopher snakes with an honorable mention. My experience picking up a wild one and taking it home (don't do this) when I was in my teens was that it was as handleable as any socialized snake I've interacted with from day one. He was handled by a lot of people in his life and never objected, hissed or bit. That experience was similar to the one Episode on Clint's Reptiles where he picked one up and it was just as chill. We had a bull snake (similar species) get inside at one point last Summer. My housemate was looking for a pillow case and some sort of tongs. I just picked the snake up, carried it outside, and let it go in a safe place for a snake. It didn't hiss or struggle. Hopefully it's still nomming on the plentiful mice in the area.

I believe that some snakes DO like to be handled-at least as much as they "like" anything. It's the warmth of your body that they enjoy. For many species, a 98.6° (Fahrenheit, or 37° Celsius) hand or neck is a cozy place. And maybe your seemingly random petting and stroking adds a bit of enrichment, too.

Yay, African house snakes made it to a list! I have a baby T- albino Cape African House Snake, and she is the most curious little one. I target trained her for food, which only took two feedings for her to learn. And I got her to go to my hand willingly from the enclosure, and explore around my hand. She's also the only snake who escaped from her enclosure. African house snake babies are smarter than you expect and so thin that you can mistake them for sentient shoelaces. She found a cavity in the top cover of her enclosure that was designed for threading cables inside like thermostat cables. But it has an extra space on a blind spot and since I couldn't see it, I didn't plug it there. So I totally agree with number one spot. Just keep in mind that this is the true escape artist. If there are any openings that you can thread a shoelace through, for your own sanity and their safety, cover it.

Western/Plains hognose have a personality all their own, so funny. And Garters are fantastic captives, I agree!

My fav snake I own right now is Maru my Mexican Black Kingsnake. She has such a curious personality. She never attacked me and she is so easy to handle. She is still very young so she doesnt really sit still in your hand but it does feel like she has her own sas in her personality and I luv that girl

I kept a few of the Lamprophis species (before the taxomomy re-work) and capensis is by far the easiest.

We just got my dream snake a Ball Python. Pastel colour. She's already such a sweetheart. She's best friends with our 3yo who's extremely gentle (not all kids are!) Sits watching her kids pad together and will fall asleep cuddling her. They might be common but, they're my all time favourite snake 🐍. I'm in Montreal Canada. Absolutely the #1 in my heart ❤️

Yay. I have a black african house snek. Right out of the shipping box, he has never struck, hissed, or done anything except dart away to avoid being held. My only gripe is he is so very nocturnal. I never see him until all lights are off. But maybe he will grow out of that.

I just added a four-year-old bumblebee Ball python to my collection today and he is such a sweetheart and I'm already in love and it's only been a couple of hours. He is joining my 3 other ball pythons and my boa.

I own a half hog island half hypo and he is a sweet boy. His second birthday is tomorrow. He is a stringbean at only 2.5-3 foot and it is a joy to hold him. He is so small compared to normal BIs of his age. He eats like a champ though and is definitely growing! He was also born with a face that is slightly deformed, so maybe it's his genetics. He seems pretty healthy, though :)

Honestly, my foster retic was the best animal i had ever met. She was so tolerant, trusting, and never held a grudge for how often we had to give her shots. She would always want to ‘come over’ to you if you were near her enclosure. She never struck out of fear or mistook for food. One time the vet had to flush her nose. They gave her back and she crawled on my shoulders and just stayed there unmoving. She was done, wanted to go home and be left alone. I was honored that she saw/used me for safety. She passed recently, just too sick. I’ll miss her. I wish i got to see her grow to 15 feet long, but someone didn’t care about her anymore and it lead to a very serious infection that her little heart couldnt take it anymore. I get her ashes soon. I was her forever home all along.

Thank you! This is a bridge that I am looking to cross so that I can offer rescue to snakes. I have some experience with large snakes but am researching small (which actually intimidate me where as an 8 foot doesn't even make me pause) to choose my first pet snake. Will be doing more research on the African house snake. So very lovely!
