My BP is definitely the exception to a lot of the cons listed here lol. She's active, she's got a strong feeding response, rarely goes on hunger strikes. When she was smaller if she struck and missed she'd scare herself out of eating that night and would need to be offered food again the next day but otherwise just super responsive. Usually a couple hours before I head to bed she's up against the enclosure doors being nosy.

@neilchace18583 жыл бұрын
From my experience, hungerstrikes are often (but not always), because they are being fed too big of rodents. I've worked with two ball pythons, Juvie and Addie. Juvie will never reject a meal, and readily takes her small rat every three weeks. Addie would often go on hungerstrikes and wouldn't eat very often. However, Addie was more willing to eat when offered a hopper mouse instead of a rat. Similarly, our kenyan sand boa was known to go on hungerstrikes up to eight months at a time. Many times people would feed him small mice and he wouldn't accept, but I've had a lot of luck feeding him pinkies instead. Our policy has since changed so that the sand boa is fed two pinkies every 14 days instead of one small mouse every 14 days.

This video has been great and because I live in Australia I'm counting myself very lucky. Dude when you mentioned Anterasia (Meculosa, Perthensis, Stimsoni, and Childreni) I jumped for joy. Seriously under rated snakes in the states. They eat so well and handle so nice. They'd eat every day and every time if you let them (don't over feed, please). Plus they exhibit more curiosity, intelligence (like Boelens ) and they are straight FUN to handle. They grip and move like Colubrids. There is a few morphs in the states and I hope to be one of the ones to expand on this with my growing breeding collection. They have a gorgeous iridescence like the better known Columbian and Brazilian rainbow boas. Morphs in states to my knowledge include Granite, Patternless, and I believe the crazy occasional anomaly. Alot more true localities and morphs in Australia. They also give very telling signs when gravid and they a super hardy little snake. Also if anyone for husbandry is curious they do not finger paint or defecate like Indigos, and much smaller amounts so spot cleaning is a breeze. Very rewarding species and GREAT starter snake. Just a bit of info for anyone wondering.

I had chosen a Dumeril's over a Ball Python as I was afraid of the infamous hunger strikes, but in the end the Dumeril I got was super nervous, bitey and had hunger strikes. Ended up giving it away to a very experienced keeper and rescued a Ball python...which is a very ravenous eater and I am in love with it's personality! Everything depends on the snake's individual personnality.

Definitely a nice list of alternative options to the very popular ball python. The childrens python and it’s relatives are a good choice that is not so well known only until recently. The only thing I think was missing was the carpet python. They reach a solid length and not too large(except the coastal), have great temperaments, are solid feeders with the same care requirements as other pythons, plus they are not so expensive. To add they have so many varieties - Bredli, Darwin’s, jungle, zebra, jaguar, Iryan Jaya, albino’s, diamond and other localities. It is one of my favorites and I’ve had 3 of them, all were pleasant to keep and I can’t help but recommend them.

First of all, love your arm tattoo! For the Python bivittatus progschai: I kept them a couple years, they are known to be quite aggressive, although mine were not, but I got to know some real monsters, that won't be quite the alternative for "beginners". Most of morphs are also Mixes between normals and progschai. Also, I had a female that only ate chicks, no rats, no mice, so not that easy sometimes. Also, I don't think morphs make the animal, a normal Angolan is way cooler than a 1000€ ball python morph. What I'm trying to say, its not the morph, that clarifies the money in many animals, at this case it's rare, and that is what is cool. Besides that, great video and nice suggestions, this just should be constructive/positive criticism 😁😅

I've had basically all of these on my dream reptile list- except for the Australian pythons (just not my preference). However, because I live in NY where burms are illegal, I've NEVER heard of dwarf burms. And since I am disabled, I had sworn off anything larger than a boa- now I can officially add dwarf burms to my dream reptile list😭

*#1 Positive Feature about Ball Pythons:* Snickering immaturely when people refer to them as just "balls"! 😆

I bought a bredding pair of hog Island boats 15 years ago for 200. Spent 10 years breeding them before I quit. Great snakes.

I never really have a problem with my ball eating, warmer seasons he usually eats twice a month, winter and fall he eats once a month. I think it depends on humidity tho, I have moss to add humidity so he sheds better
