+Tim Davis Thanks Tim - yes, those acronyms help learn all kinds of information. When hooking & unhooking a semi-trailer, it's important to do it in the same order every time so the driver doesn't drop it on the ground, smash the landing gear, or rip off the air lines. Thanks Cheers Rick

The driving school I'm going to only teaches progressive shifting even though we are right in the rocky mountains. I expect to pass my road test next month but I want to learn double clutching. Would I be able to attend a class or two at your school after I get my Class 1 just to learn double clutching?

Hi Darlene - thank you for your comment. Where are you in the Rockies? Which school are you working with? It's going to be tough for your to learn double clutching after you get your license and can already drive. I suggest the best thing is for us to have a conversation. Send me an email at rick@smartdrivetest.com and I'll send you my number. And give me a time that is best to contact you. I'll give you a ring and we can discuss some option. All the best, Cheers Rick

I'm curious why ICBC allows on a class 1 road exam for a semi to break MVA 165. They allow the semi at multi lane intersections to swing across ALL the lanes, rather than finishing in the correct lane, right turn right lane, left turn left lane. here on page 66 in ICBC's road exam manual,,,,,,, www.icbc.com/driver-licensing/driving-guides/Pages/Driving-commercial-vehicles.aspx,,,,,,,,,,, Curious on your thoughts as BC is the only place this is allowed and still pass the road exam.

Hi Graham: Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately the link didn't work, but I should be able to shed some light on your query. The keyword in the BC Motor Vehicle Act is "practicable". In other words, can the manoeuvre can be done successfully? And for larger vehicles that accelerate & brake slower than cars & light trucks, drivers of these vehicle first priority is not to obstruct or impede other traffic - or at least keep that to a minimum. Therefore, when travelling on multi-lane roads & highways, these vehicles must travel in the right-hand lane, unless passing. During turns--due to the size of these vehicles--drivers are going to cross into the right-hand lane and then come back to the left - as we did a decade ago when I worked in Ontario. In an effort to reduce impediment to other traffic, larger vehicles move directly into the right hand lane when turning left. Drop me a note if you have further questions. Cheers Rick

That's why I find it wrong, as close as practicable in the supreme court of Canada means to finish in the correct lane or be at fault in a crash. And as I have drive 45'' & 53' trailers as well as Super-B trailers from NWT down to the Mexican boarder, multi millions of kms in almost every major city in the western half of North America, I have yet to find one intersection I can't finish my left & right turns in the correct lane without impediment to other traffic,(so it's very Possible) and failure to do so on a road exam is marks added on, too many marks equals a fail, BC is the only place that allows that I have found, It's only ICBC sub standards that allow this even though the courts don't. Here is the link, it's working now. www.icbc.com/driver-licensing/driving-guides/Pages/Driving-commercial-vehicles.aspx

Hi Graham - I would be interested in seeing the legal case to which you refer in the Supreme Court, as I’m not familiar with it. Would you be able to send me that reference? It would be great to have read that and provide some information for all the smart drivers looking at my KZbin channel. Thanks Cheers Rick

Yes, no problem, www.canlii.org/en/bc/bcsc/doc/2014/2014bcsc154/2014bcsc154.html ,,,,,,,, And at [52] you can clearly see the judges ruling. You may be interested as well that I contacted the RCMP & CVSE as well and asked if semi's had to follow the MVA the same as all other motor vehicles, and indeed they do. The proper turn as it is very practicable to finish a left or a right turn in the correct lane and then do proper when safe lane changes after completion of the turn, same as all other vehicles, there are no separate MVA laws for semi's, other than to allow for off-track of course, as you well know we have to even at times swing all the way into the oncoming lanes. The best commercial drivers manual I have found that shows the 3 correct ways for a semi to turn at multi lane intersections is Manitoba's, here,, www.mpi.mb.ca/en/PDFs/ProfDriverHBookComp.pdf ,,,,, pages 60-68,,, But even next door in Alberta, failure to finish in the correct lane on a road exam results in demerits, & too many demerits = a fail. In BC breaking MVA 165(5) can result in 3 points & $109 fine, and as you can see a loss in court should a crash occur. Thanks Graham :-)
