There actually is a 5-second-rule that is related to this (somewhat). You'd have to do a bit research into the nuerochemistry of why this works but it works EVERY TIME! Just an idea if you actually do want to make a series of this XD

This video came in at the perfect time. I'm gonna write "5 minute rule" on a sticky note to keep reminding myself of it. So far, in the past 10 minutes, I've done 2 things. A really important extra note - Use the 5-minute rule not to trick yourself into doing more work, otherwise you will just see it as the big scary task. Genuinely let yourself leave the task after 5 minutes if you want to, otherwise, you won't use the technique and make doing that task a long term habit.

This is the most important part! Committing to 5 minutes but with guilt-free abandonment fully on the cards. This worked when I was trying to get myself to exercise. Getting my shoes on and out the door was the hardest part, so once I'd started it didn't seem to be too bad to continue. But if I turned back early I called it a win.

Short summary of the video that you can paste in your notes. The 5 minute rule: If you want to stop procrastinating and actually get started on a big project/anything else that you are intimidated to do, set a 5 minute timer and work on that project. Once the time is up you can do whatever you want tho chances are high that you will want to finish the whole project because you already surpassed your comfort zone, which is the hardest part.

Here are the 2 reasons you've found yourself procrastinating your whole life. 1) You're not doing something you naturally enjoy and you naturally find yourself working at. If you have to force it, you'll eventually procrastinate no matter how disciplined. 2) You have subconscious fears of failure/judgement. You won't work on that essay or on your work if you're associating your value with the quality of the end result. Therefore, procrastinating will give you a scapegoat.

In fact, if you think about it, our brain is our everything. The information we receive while watching this video is stored in our brains. So, logically, I can say that I will give 5 minutes to myself or my work, but my brain already knows that it will not be 5 minutes. This can create a feeling of procrastination again (I don't have a problem with procrastination, I can do something directly, but I'm just theorizing lol) In short, we don't need to create such "5 minutes" rules for ourselves because it's probably a short-term thing (which might actually work for some people). The important thing is to think well and understand what we want in life. To understand what we need to do for what we want and what it entails. In this way, even when you are not motivated, you will be able to continue because you know your wishes. By the way, great video Matt!

Another great 5-minutes rule to be productive - do all the things that take less than 5 minutes in the moment, instead of planning them for the future. Just do them. I think a big problem with “procrastination” or “not having the energy” to do something is that our worlds have become incredibly comfortable (evolutionarily speaking). There must be a bigger consequence to NOT acting than there is the reward of acting. Yet, we are often confused on our risk/benefit analysis. So we THINK sitting on the couch is more rewarding than going to the gym. Either way, the threat of something greater or more beneficial isn’t there when our lives are super comfy. 100 years ago if you didn’t get off your ass and tend your farm, you died. Pretty big motivator. Now if you don’t get off your ass and cook a meal, there’s always uber eats.

I feel like that if the point of the 5 minute rule is to "trick your brain" into doing hard work, your brain is going to associate the rule with doing hard work and naturally feel resistance to it. I feel like a better idea is to define a specific small task to complete that will actually advance you forward. If you still feel resistance to completing the task, you can make it simpler. The idea is that as long as you complete the task, you have made progress. I find that just working on something for 5 minutes often results in no actual progress being made, and my brain isn't usually tricked into working longer if I even manage to start the 5 minutes. An actual defined task has much more motivation associated with it. Though of course if the 5 minute rule works for you that's fine too 😅

@@sarahinsf They're really not that big of a deal. They can't hurt you, the only danger with them is, as you say, a surprise car visit. But they're pretty common in houses. My family call all huntsmans Stanley. They're pretty much harmless.

I absolutely love this concept! It's extremely valuable in life. I also really enjoy your videos! My girlfriend introduced me to a couple of vids today and man it couldn't have been a more opportune time. I am in the middle of a career change which was scary and overwhelming at certain times. I had to make decisions that my mind was at complete conflict with. Watching this vid was the info therapy I needed to keep pushing! Thanks S/O to my loving and caring girlfriend for showing me this & S/O to you Matt D'Avella for making these vids. You don't know how much this has aided me in such a challenging time. Cheers,

Ok so you tell your brain “just 5 minutes” and you wind up doing 5 hours. Next time you tell your brain “just 5 minutes” and your brain goes “HELL NO! You said that last time and LIED! I’m outa here fool!”

As someone in cybersecurity, that ad portion about cybersecurity was really nice. I know it was sponsored and probably had notes from Google but it's still great that someone with as big a reach as you is talking about bad passwords.

I came here to learn how to invest after listening to a guy on radio talk about the importance of investing and how he made $460,000 in 4 months from $160k, somehow this video has helped shed light on some things, but I'm still confused, I'm a newbie and I'm open to ideas.

Having monitored my portfolio performance which has made a jaw dropping $370k from just the past two quarters alone, I have learned why experienced traders make enormous returns from the seemingly unknown market.

Interesting. I have a lump sum doing absolutely nothing at all in my bank account, I wanna get something started with it. You seem to be doing excellent for yourself, how do you achieve this?

@Owen Watson jr Am trading with expert Mrs Mitchell Roland, a regulated broker in the US. Met her sometime early last year at a startup funding event. She had some interesting things to say about the state of algorithmic trading today.very obviously I'm seeing the results.

@Owen Watson jr My money stays right in my trading account, my account just mirrors her trades in real-time.that's the idea behind copy trading.

I love this! I actually developed a system of once a day, picking two rooms and spending three minutes on each room for a total of 6 minutes! I call it the 1,2,3 Simplicity Method (inspired by James Clear's Atomic Habits)! I've shared it with friends who found it useful as a good jumping off point to develop this habit of tidying their homes! Thank you for sharing this video!

great...now I procrastinate setting the 5 minute timer! All joking aside, this is great advice. I find developing an unbreakable habit works well. I've use that habit for my daily morning walk and meditation. No matter what, that alarm goes off at 5:20am, I get out of bed, change and get walking. even in the pouring rain, I don't falter. I also took a page from Einstein and Steve Jobs with not wasting brain power deciding on what to wear. I spun it towards lunch instead of clothes. I have been eating a smoothie every day for about 3 years and pack a salad for lunch for 7 years now. Call it boring, but it saves my brain power for more important things.

I agree with the other comments about being willing to keep your bargain with yourself. I think that if you do that, you might be far more willing to come back and work more on the project. You can pat yourself on the back for the five or however many minutes you did, or you can beat yourself up for not doing the whole thing. I think that positive self-talk gets you more in the end than being harsh.
