The 5 Most Unreliable BMW 5 Series Models You Can Buy
If you're wondering which of the BMW 5 series models you should stay away from, then this video is for you. I go through the most unreliable models of BMW in the 5 series, and I give you the reasons why these cars were the least reliable cars ever from BMW. Are BMW M5's reliable? Well, some of them are...but none of them on this list.
The BMW e60 M5 is certainly one of the least reliable BMWs on the market today, and I think it's pretty easy to see why. Everything from the Vanos, to the sophisticated electronics, to the e60 rod bearing issues gives this car a claim to being one of the 5 most unreliable BMW 5 series models.
You'll notice different versions of the e60 m5 BMW models all throughout this list, with the N47 diesel engine making an appearance in the 520D, the e60 m5, and the e60 535i all making an appearance here. We also had the BMW e39 show up, as well as the 530i make an appearance. All of these cars just missed the mark in terms of reliability for a variety of reasons.
All in all, the BMW 5 series can be a reliable car. These are great performance vehicles, but sometimes they give up too much in reliability, and these 5 cars are a great example of that.
Now go ahead and SMASH that SUBSCRIBE button and stay tuned for the next great video from Mark Holubetz at ExoticCar PlayPlace.

When you love your e39 m5 like I do you enjoy fixing it. All vehicles break and some cost more than others. If you want reliability buy a boring Toyota or a Honda and don't be fooled into thinking they won't break because all vehicles are slowly breaking with each turn of the crank. My M5 is worth every penny I put into it and I admire the engineering put into it every time I turn a wrench on it. Nice video and mostly accurate.

Agreed! I have an E39 M5 and it has been extremely reliable. The clutch just went out at 230K miles - hard to complain about that. There are plenty of little things that broke, such as the window shades. I haven't seen the check engine light come on since I coded out the AA secondary air pump code :D .

It really is up to the previous owner. All e39’s can be reliable but the V8’s are only reliable if the timing guides and engine maintenance were up to date. Overall, e39’s are very good though.

I own a 2001 BMW 530iM auto thats done over 220000ks here in nz, and its the best ive had and come across,, ive had my days of repairs such as brake fluid leak and control arm repairs and speedometer repair, and honestly, its more reliable then you think, its BMW's most loved 01-02 530iM car, and manywould agree, yet will be the car everyone is now wanting as they are becoming rare, and also have the real BMW power, style and performance, its always a head turner for most, its also still the dream car for some in the world, yet becoming a high value by the year, its mostly about how you maintain the 2001-2002 530iM cars , you treat it good and it will treat you better in return, people who have never kept upto date with maintainance would say the cars unreliable, i say these cars will be still number 1 for bmw and also most loved generation at bimmerfest / Ashpaltfieber, and worldwide

Agreed. My 2001 540i w/ sport package has been a fantastic car. Daily driver for past seven years. Powerful, comfortable, still looks fine. 150k miles. Other than tires and brakes/rotors, I've replaced alternator, power steering hose, and thrust arms. That's it. Original owner took good care... full service records from day off the lot. Of course, if you can't diy it'll be costly, but anyone buying one of these should know that.

On the other edge. The best and most reliable 5series was and still is the E39 530d! If you service it it is kind of bullet proof and built to last forever. Mine is 21 years old now and feels, looks and drives on absolute top level. Nothing compares to this. The Automatic Gearbox is unfortunately from GM in this model but still fine when you handle it properly and smooth in all those years. It make me happy whenever I sit in the car ❤️

Those are the best cars to have. M50 intake slapped on the engine, M54 3L cams (modified for the 2.5L) and we are talking about ~210hp. That engine I think is the best engine BMW has done. Check for breather valve, the CCV, those hard lines are going "puff" and the breather valve is very often dead. Poor idle is the first sign of breather valve failure on any inline 6 from BMW.

@@eEnzo0 I would have to agree with you the beating that I put on this car and if they never ever died and I beat the living crap out of it I put high performance coils in there I lowered it inch and a half and put high performance air cooler in the only thing I haven't attacked was the exhaust I just put a regular exhaust in and then I became disabled and unable to keep up with the maintenance on it it's got 320000 miles on it. I had with the original motor original clutch I've replaced the fuel filter and the radiator brakes and exhaust on it as it is in 92 and its first 18 years or so was spent in San Diego so there was Zero rust on it as well I still have it today I'm just trying to figure out where I'm going to get the money to rebuild it because I know in a few years it's going to be worth ten times what it is today

I've got an e34 with an m20 engine, had a broken rocker last year which resulted in getting the engine rebuilt plus stroked from 2.5 to 2.8. It died around 351k km and after the rebuild it has been working like a charm, I just hit 360k on the clock. Other than having the throttle body rip a hole in itself it has been mostly reliable. Although I wish it was a little more fuel efficient and more torquey.

I have E60 545i and it's hard to believe that there are cars that are even worse than that. Lately every month I've had some minor or major issue with it. The complexity of it is beyond belief and problems cover everything - mechanical and electrical systems... It's surely not meant to be daily driven. Hard to believe that engineers @BMW don't know what they are doing. Most likely they are absolutely aware of every time bomb they put into cars (bad timing chains, incorrect tolerances of rod bearings, valvetronic lifters, poor quality materials etc.) they make... and for them it's fine, as long as there are "enthusiasts" that still buy BMW's :)

My 2001 GS430 (Toyota Aristo w/ 3UZ-FE engine) has been the best car, by FAR, that I've owned. (albeit... only a couple of Nissan's and mostly GM's- over 10 Pontiacs, 2 GMC trucks, and 3 Cadillacs) I love the E60 550i, too...but, if anything... the 550i prob isn't any better at all (cost/maintenance/reliability-wise) over the 545i, right?

@@AirRideFanatic Yes, It's my daily driver but If you would want to daily 550i, I wouldn't recommend. As a second weekend car, it would be a great fun, but definitely not cheaper to maintain. As far as I know there are only some improvements like secondary air injection, but basically it's all the same. As the car ages it becomes more unreliable... the newest 550i E60 you can get is already 8 years old. If you are still considering, at least find any BMW expert that really understands BMW electronics and has experience with N62 - valvetronic and vanos systems... and have couple thousand $ ready for the unknown. :) For me the maintenance cost is about 3.5k$ per 10k km, fuel excluded.

If you're a D.I.Y kind of guy now is your time to buy an N54 car because most of that maintenance has probably already been done and if your Hpfp fails or gaskets, the parts are plentiful and cheap to replace. I got quoted 900$ CANADIAN and 400$ labor to fix my HPFP on my 335i. I went on eBay, bought a brand new pump for $250 by OASIS and installed the damn thing myself. It's all about knowing what you're doing. If you're not handy, don't buy one. If you are handy, and have a love for cars, the car is for you. My friends ask me all the time how I can afford a car like mine and I tell them all the time I bought it for probably 2/3 of the price of their Toyota Camry or Honda accord Lol

You're right, but if you buy a 530i, BMW expect the "typical buyer" not to beat the car every time the engine runs. With a Performance "///M Motorsport" Car the Manufacturer should expect, that after the engine reaches working temperature the car is Hammered. It decreases the Lifetime of every engine when you hammer it every time, but the M-Engines should have more reserves to compensate for it.

I my self have own a few BMW's started when I was younger with a 325 then moved up to a 99 M3 to my current one a 530i witch I love what do you think about it. I've owned it for a year now the only thing I have notice was once in a while I get a gas smell coming from the opposite side of the gas tank. Have any idea what this might be if so thanks for the info. I'll keep watching your videos and keep them coming love watching them.

E60 is way more reliable compared to f10s. Not sure how much you know about the f10s? This makes an e60 look like a saint. We see so many locked up engines on n63 v8s and N20 4cyl engines breaking oil pump timing chains, blown turbos, chains, coolant leaks and I can go on and on. Way more oil leaks and coolant leak issues then e60s. Also, the n55 engine suffer from crankshafts bending and rod bearing failures! I would add the f10 on the #1 list then the e60

As for me, E34 was way more reliable. Easier to fix, less electronics to go wrong and in general design looked more serious. Now having E39 530d for a year, I can say that I don't particularly miss e34, but also wouldn't mind driving again. E39 is a little more comfortable to drive, feels a tad heavier but still is way better on highway than anything else I have driven. A lot more comfort equipment, but that's the two-edged sword. My car runs quite well overall, has 269Kkm on dash, but LCM last recorded high was around 410kkm (someone has made mileage look better before I got it), so it has a fair bit of life behind it. Mechanically absolutely fine, but electronics have a lot of minor issues here and there. Usually down to bad connectors, corroded pins, rub wire insulation etc. And compared to e34 it has a lot of wiring. But still, I have WAYYYY easier life than my friend with E60 530d, so there's that.

I have the E39 2002 540i yes it is unreliable but easy to fix. In fact I bought another off clist for 800 bucks so that I can part it out for my daily driver. I'm no longer buying new with tons of sensors and computers because they will break. All BMWs are built with plastics designed to break or bake to brittle and shatter. I guess is all designed that way to keep buying every time.

@@ECPP After I bought my used 2002 on 2005 and the wheel well cover ripped and almost caught on fire while on the highway. I contacted BMW in Stuttgard Germany only to get a call from some BMW VP from NJ. "Barbara" and when I asked if they had improved their plastics she responded I should buy a newer model because of the newer parts and better made..... so no she didn't answer my question. BTW you forgot to mention the seats twisting the backrests, the valley pan leaks and the water pump impellers made out of plastic instead of metal thus breaking apart and the engine over heating.

Total bullshit. Had several E60/E61’s, 535d & 550i (man) pre LCI and a E61 Alpina B5S and did approx 250K km’s without any issues. If you can’t drive, yeah, they will break down. No tech feeling & save on maintenance = problems. With all cars. M5 E60 crap? Bullshit. Change your rod bearings every 60K km and you have no issues. Expensive? No, not compared to your gas bill.

Maintenance records look good, I had to have a fuel feed line replaced, but otherwise runs well at 81k miles.
