This week we'll be looking at the 2 most flexible and common scales you're ever likely to use in your bass lines: The Major and Minor Pentatonic scales.
Pentatonic scales are simple 5 note scales so there are literally hundreds of possible variations. But the most common are the Major and Minor Pentatonic.
In this lesson we'll work through a basic 1 octave shape for each scale and then apply them to a simple chord progression.
Enjoy!

Perfect, just perfect. Lifelong drummer here just picking up the bass again. I have plenty of theory but needed these basics to avoid developing typical bad habits and I thank you for that.

Hi Mark. As per my question on a recent live stream, I’m still obsessed with the Neapolitan scale. More specifically how the N6 chord fits in with other chords tones. Also, I’ve been learning about secondary dominants. I understand the the theory but no so much as to living up a bass line. It would be great to get some advice on this. Cheers from Portsmouth.

When you were soloing over the track at the end of the video, how do you transition from one scale to the next? The track starts on C and then goes to G, so how are you transitioning from the C scale to the G scale in your solo? A video on this would be great. Thank you.

I'd be very interested in how the modes are connected to each other. For example if you play an E phrygian scale further down you basically end up in an A minor scale starting from the A on the E string. I see a pattern but I can't quite figure it out. I hope you can make a nice video explaining this. PS thanks for all your work! I'm a huge fan of what you do!

Awesome teacher! Can you please help out with how to apply scales or modes or what ever in to a song, and can you please help me out with a very simple to understand the ninth chord, and will playing by the numbers systems, help me learn to play by ear more, I know the whole fretboard, all the major minor scale major minor triads, major minor pentatonic scales and a few other, I can play them anywhere on the fretboard, I also know the numbers systems and how it is layed out, but I have only been learning for about 9 months now, I don't know how to put it together in a song? So could you please help me or other people out, i am sick of banging on the root note!

I know my scales and modes, but I just hammer through them with quarter notes or double up with sixteenth notes. I hear players like Duck Dunn just float through these modes with different patterns and rhythms. I would like to learn how to practice that. I also hear a lot of Jazz players jamming through these modes with what sounds to me like one lick after the next. I want to get out of this box I'm stuck in using these modes. Please help.

Holy crap he’s wearing an LA Guns shirt! This was an enjoyable concert tho. They sound like shit which is entertaining in its own right, and there’s a few magic moments in it but it’s sort of like watching a car wreck. The drummer is amazing. Just fascinating watch/listen really. I really like Celtic Frost but this was a lame performance but I’m glad it’s here. Mixed emotions which for me means GLORIOUS!

Yeah that LA Guns shirt is the blackest you’ll ever see. I don’t have a drummer with me but I’m sure what you’re hearing is wicked. As for Celtic Frost, I didn’t really include any in the lesson but I’ll think about it in future. Thanks for the insightful critique
