My wife and I will be cremated, and our ashes will be in a columbarium in a military cemetery. As Catholics, we consider that ground as consecrated. While I know that no one will visit our "graves", we will still be remembered. And as to scattering, I wouldn't do it, but in my heart I know that God can resurrect us regardless of what happened to our mortal bodies. Those souls lost at sea, those disintegrated by explosion, those of whom no trace can be found will still be raised up by the glory of God, for Whom nothing is impossible.

Why will you be cremated? Our bodies are Temples of the Holy Ghost. Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Orders, Matrimony, Holy Eucharist, Extreme Unction all have their indelible mark on your body to the very marrow of your bones. Cremation is a Masonic practice. Whatever happens to bodies by happenstance isn't usual, and yes God will bring us back to wholeness at the Resurrection, but why would you do that to a body which has died a natural death?

Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side.6 The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 24 And he called out, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ 27 And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house- 28 for I have five brothers-so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; ret them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’ ” Jesus is telling this story to you , will you hear Him?

Does anyone consider that most of us can't afford to pay thousands of dollars for a funeral, nor do we have loving children that would want us to have a proper burial and make sure we are taken care of as a final request. We all took care of my parents, they both wanted a funeral, and we made sure it happened, it was very important to them, but it has never been important for me and I wouldn't expect anyone I know to pitch in a few thousand to give me a proper funeral. I understand where most people plan their funeral and they have already paid for most of it, but I personally don't want to think about it until the time comes, and even then, just give the money that I would receive to animal shelters and St. Jude or Shriners for Children where it will be used for a good cause and not a funeral parlor that doesn't care about the dead, it is merely a business to them. I am a Catholic, but final rights has always bothered me. If anything, a celebration of life would be the closest thing to a funeral and that's why so many people I know have chosen that route.

The Church makes lots of random rules because they simply like rules, and they LOVE telling people what to think and what to do. My thought is that if your husband's parents wanted their ashes spread somewhere, your husband would be honoring them to do so. If they left no instructions, it's perfectly alright for you to make suggestions. But as long as your husband's ultimate decision is based on loving and honoring his parents, it seems to me that whatever he decides should be fine.

Of course, we all know God can do anything. But that is not the point. The human body is sacred and should be memorialized in a manner where they can be identified- like a cemetery. It is also proof of their existence, and reminds others to pray for them. Opposition to scattering cremains has nothing to do with whether the body can be resurrected- but it may be part of Judgement on behalf of the person arranging the scattering.

Serious question- how do we reconcile this with the fact that bits and pieces of Saints' bodies are all over the world?
@andreasheehan162 жыл бұрын
I was literally thinking the same thing! A question I’ve had for awhile.
@Xanaseb2 жыл бұрын
A piece of the saint's body is treated by the Church as equally worthy of veneration as the whole. See the discourse of Vitricius of Rouen 'In Praise of the Saints'. Some Christians however do not tend to venerate relic pieces but the whole body must be there in order to do so, namely, the Ethiopian Orthodox. Cremation causes our bodies to turn into fine dust and therefore not very easy to venerate or identify. That is why I believe the Church was wrong to start permitting cremation in the 20thC, and the traditional teaching should be upheld. In conservative Catholic countries such as Poland, it was unheard of until very recently to cremate the dead. With the Covid pandemic, the state enforced cremation for a certain time, much to the horror of the people. There was no good justification for this and it goes right against traditional Catholic practice. Let's pray for a return of bodily burial!
@Xanaseb2 жыл бұрын
@@annesmith6582 there are two questions you are posing here. Q1. Why are saints' relics worthy of veneration and a non-saint not? Q2. Why are cremated remains not worthy of veneration? A1. They are worthy to be venerated in a special way because they have been known and proven to perform miracles and answer our prayers. One can of course, and should, venerate the body of a relative or friend or honoured member of your community, etc. but that is different to the purpose of a public 'cultus' of a saint. A2. One could technically venerate ashes, just not very easily. St.Maximillian Kolbe was killed in Auschwitz. His body was cremated and scattered on the heaps of thousands of other peoples' ashes. We can't make particular veneration to his remains therefore. Only his beard survived, apparently, cut off and saved by his fellow brothers before his arrest.

I am old enough to remember when cremation was considered a sin. Then I was told that the Church approved it because especially in Europe, there wasn't enough land. I know in New Orleans; people are buried above ground in cemeteries and I understand that after a certain amount of time, their remains are pushed to the back of the crypt and other bodies placed in it. I don't understand how Church laws are so flexible. I remember when a marriage couldn't be annulled if it had been "consummated". Then, I was told that if the person you marry is not the person you thought they would be, you qualified for an annulment! In this scenario, almost everyone I know would qualify for an annulment but my observation is that it usually a man who wants to dump his 1st wife and marry a much younger woman with whom he can have more children. And the Church apparently is okay with that. How times have changed.
@suzannejane10352 жыл бұрын
@@joanschilleci7564 It's utterly untrue that you can have an annulment because the person you married wasn't the person you thought they were. Whoever told you that is wrong. There are set rules for an annulment, I am going through one at the moment and my brother who is a priest is advising me. We have the paperwork and it has to go to a canon law tribunal which then decides if the reasons stipulated in the Catholic church for the annulment have been met. The church is not 'ok' with dumping your spouse for nothing.

I was sorely tempted to scatter her ashes off Harvey's Beach, Northport, also in Suffolk County on the Long Island Sound. Long story short, I did not, because of the Church’s teaching, but I'm not going to lie-i wanted to. Thank you again.. -

Do you not know that the Creator of Heaven and Earth can do anything? Amos 5:8 "seek him that maketh the Pleiades and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night; that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth (Jehovah is his name);" Who are you looking to for eternal life? The Son of God or what man says. Here is some Good News no matter what happens at death. Romans 5:8-11 "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life; and not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation." Your dead body will be completely unaware if part of your cousin is in there with you or not. Maybe she's scattering him in places that had meaning for him. That's what I did with my parents. They both asked to be spread in the back yard, so part of them are there, and the rest of them ended up in Michigan where they met. I think they would have liked that had I ever brought it up to them. I think they just didn't want anyone to be troubled by disposing of them. It wasn't a problem. Thank you for explaining this to us, Father Mike. So many people I know have their loved ones remains at home and never bury them. They take them to the ocean or their favorite place and scatter them and think this is okay. As you said, It is an act of mercy.

My mother died almost three years ago (september 2019 the same year my son was born). She said that when her time was due we should bury in a casket and then after some time her body should be cremated. Now her ashes are in an osary at the church she used to go to.

I never realized until maybe a few years ago how I as a Catholic, Celebrate similar as to The Day of the Dead. We celebrate my grandma’s birthday by having her favorite meal and listening to Spanish music. When I lived in Florida, and when we visit, we visit my grandma and grandpa, my stepdad and my great uncle. It’s good to keep their memory alive with my daughter and my cousins kids. And it’s good to pray for them. When I lived closer, we would visit all the time. I will have a talk with my grandpa and grandma. Tell them what’s going on in my life. Do some prayers. And we bring Holy Water and sprinkle it around on all the graves as we pass by to visit our loved ones. I feel my loved ones presence as we pray and talk to them and visit. I think it’s good and healthy to keep that spiritual connection with our loved ones. That’s me but that’s how I feel. ♥️

1 Thessalonians 4 KJV 13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

@@angelalemos9811 I’ve learned on some kind of documentary that The Day of the Dead is the Catholic celebration of All Souls Day. I just looked it up and it said: this day is observed by The Roman Catholic Church to remember the souls of those who are in Purgatory. The Holloween is Hallow’s Eve, the Eve of All Saints Day. Then there is Day of the Dead, which is All Souls Day. I’ve never heard of the Satan day, which I would NEVER celebrate or observe that anyways. I definitely stay close to God and His teachings, especially within the church and Jewish traditions.

I am not a Catholic but two of my brothers married Catholic women and changed their religion so I have respect for both followings as we all worship the same God. I already have my place of rest in a Church Yard where my daughter was married and my family members ashes are already laid to rest. I always say a prayer for my lost family at the graveyard and when visiting a church I will say a prayer and light a candle for them. I think saying a prayer gives you strength to cope with the loss of love ones as well.

I don't want to leave my boys with questions about what and how I feel about cremation. I'm afraid to have my ashes "scattered" one day.. I pray that our Lord has a long healthy life for me! I am now 65! God bless you father, I'm so thankful you!

This is reassuring for me. My grandma passed away 2 months ago as of tomorrow morning and she wanted to be cremated (she was Christian, not Catholic to my knowledge). Before I saw this I thought Catholics didn't advocate for cremation at all based on what my RCIA leaders told me, but I didn't say anything because I didn't want to go against her wishes and it wasn't my decision to make. Since her ashes will be kept in an urn I don't see an issue anymore. Thank you.
@JanuaryRose022 жыл бұрын
Catholic or Christian the burden falls upon you and your soul. You had her cremated. You were wrong. You can fix it, by having her cremains properly buried. You do know that Christians are just fallen Catholics, right?! As a Cathoic, do what is right.

Please study the Bible and listen to real theologians like Dr. John Ankerberg and learn that ALL dead bodies are unclean, the High Priest wasn't even allowed to enter a cemetery! You should also know that there is a huuuge difference between human ashes and the animal ashes. The ashes of the red heifer has been used to cleanse the Temple. Human remans/ashes are disgusting and must be buried and not kept at home or anywhere above ground! And by the way, GOD doesn't really like cremation, read the Book of Amos: Judgment on Moab, Judah, and Israel Amos 2: 1 This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Moab, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because he burned to lime the bones of Edom’s king. 2So I will send fire against Moab to consume the citadels of Kerioth. Moab will die in tumult, amid war cries and the sound of the ram’s horn .… (Yes, we live under JESUS' new Covenant but the New Testament also refers to dead bodies/cemeteries as unclean) Human remains are unclean and unclean/occult/accursed things attract demons and give them a foothold. Do your own research on these things, look up the occult objects list The good news is that death is not the end and the most important thing for everyone is to get saved: accept JESUS CHRIST as your Lord and Savior while you can! It must come form the bottom of your heart and remember that JESUS is GOD, see John 1!

I have a question - If a person's remains need to be kept together, why is it OK for relics of saints to be separated and distributed to various places? I understand that the relic is kept on sacred ground, however, the parts of the body is separated. How does the Church approve of this?
@sadie45382 жыл бұрын
Saints are so special, they are closer to God because of the life and/or suffering they experienced -- many were martyred for the Faith! They grant miracles (there have been many people who have been healed by merely touching a relic of a saint); there are powerful, intercessory prayers to saints, etc. So, I think that based on the extraordinary lives they led, and miracles they have performed, and - to coin a phrase - everyone wants a piece of them! (no disrespect intended) God bless.

Thank you Fr Mike. Mother tended the graves of her parents, sister and husband for decades. I started helping a few years ago, and now do it bringing her along to 'supervise'. People don't understand the solace it brings to honour our dead. I find it very peaceful there as I contemplate what my own wishes are. Thinking of a 'green burial' in the same cemetery as my family members; no children and there doesn't seem to be anyone in the next generation who has shown any interest. I have a plot but don't see the sense in the expense these days. Would appreciate your thoughts.
