So i get from 1-2 calcium stones a month, now granted there have been months i have gone without getting any, but i have had these since i was 23. i usually can pass them without hospital visits but there have been many times i can not stand the pain and go. I am pretty good at tracking the passing of these stones from start to finish, wish these would go away these affect so much of my life from eating to drinking to just exercising or a walk with the wife.

10 days ago I figured out my horrible and crippling joint pain was due to my VERY Green smoothies! First time I have had no pain in two years. My smoothies were an entire batch of Collard greens, an entire bag of Spinach, Kale, raspberries, blueberries, collagen powder....I would have almonds with it. I even had pieces of stones floating around my knees causing terrible pain. I stopped all of it, and am now pain free. It is literally a miracle.

Brazillian stoner here. A few tips that always help me passing one: 1 - Heat is the key and for me it decreases pain instantly in about 50%, so always have a thermal bag in home. 2 - Drink as much as you can of apple cider vinegar with lemon juice, whole cups of it. Gladly to help. And to prevent any kind os stone my tip is to always have a bottle of water by your side in every ocasion of your day and drink a cup of apple cider vinegar with lemon juice every single day of your life. Im clean of stones for 3 years now since i started this "strategy".

Just came back from the ER, I get recurring kidney stones every year, and this one was the biggest at 8mm for me. At this point I've had so many that even though the pain is the same, I'm able to drive myself to the hospital so long as I stay calm and take deep breaths. Had to stay overnight, they gave me a JJ-stemp, some antibiotics, and sent me home the next day. To anyone who's never had a kidney stone, god I envy you.

Another 2-3 days where pain meds barely cut into the pain and finally plop, 5 mm stone. I feel small when you all say 8mm and 9mm. :)

My husband had a 12 mm... Had absolutely no pain. Actually had gallbladder pain and that's how it was discovered. Three surgery later finally passed the stone. Three stents as well. Just did 6 months follow up only to discover he has another 12 mm on the other side. So now we're going through this whole low oxalate diet... It's just insane. We eat healthy. He exercises. He drinks a ton of water....

Thanks for the highly informative video. I had a kidney stone in 2013. I haven't had one since, thank God, but I am always wary about what I eat how much I drink. At the time of my infliction, I thought I was living a healthy life. I went to the gym three to four times a week, my meals were relatively balanced, and I drank primarily water. But I should add that this was also a very stressful period in my life. A new job overseas awaited me and I was to be wed shortly before my departure. I believe all of this became a bit overwhelming for me and manifested itself into a kidney stone. Perhaps the cause might not always be one's diet. Sometimes the reason could be psychosomatic.

My story is I have had four hospitalizations for severe sepsis but MDs couldn’t find source. After the third time it was determined to be a 6mm kidney stone caught in the tube going from the kidney to the bladder. It was removed by Dr. Bennett. I am asymptomatic for kidney stone pain, and had a fourth episode a year later. I’m on low dose nitrofurantoin and diet, so this visual method of learning was helpful!

@TRUST - I passed 14 little stones each with a diameter of 2 mm or less. This was totally painless. Now, I was lucky because I had Extracorporal Sound Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL). I highly recommend you try this method because it was totally non-invasive, no stent was needed and painless. There was some blood in the urine on day one. But no pain.

German M. Sc. of chemistry here ... at the uni I gave lectures in front of quite a few soon-to-be physicians as well and I had kidney stones, too! Today I avoid - not exclude - those mentioned ingredients. I combine them with milk products so the calcium oxalate precipitates as indigestible solid in my stomach. OR I use my fizzy tablets containing lots of citrate flooding my body and urine with it thus I 'camouflage' the calcium in the urine so oxalate does not find any and cannot precipitate in my kidneys. 😉

Since so many foods contain oxalates it seems to come down to moderation in eating. Rather than label any one food verboten, eating smaller portions overall seems to make more sense. Besides, Americans tend to eat supersize portions of nearly everything. Take, for example, the smoothie makers who go through a 1/2 bag of spinach a day. Thanks much for your video.

Well done example. What popped out at me first and foremost was that when adding the meat there was no oxalate listed because it’s insignificant. Yet, most of the advice that doctors give their patients is to avoid animal meat. We live in a world where we tend to believe in advice from authorities who are continuously giving us the exact opposite dietary advice to what would actually make us healthy and cure us of diseases.
@dfinite11112 жыл бұрын
Not certain, but I think they recommend to not eat much protein from animal meat, because it makes the kidneys work very hard.
@humblerojo63002 жыл бұрын
@@dfinite1111 I understand why that was previously the advice given based on theory and assumptions but that’s now a well disproven myth with recent metabolic understanding and evidence. Doctors who no longer wish to learn beyond their original programming (mis-training) either haven’t caught up yet or refuse to reverse their previous advice for fear of reprisal. That said, if your patient has kidney damage it might be good advice to moderate ALL protein not just animal protein. It’s also important to understand that animal fat and protein (eaten in the absence of carbs and unnecessary fiber) is actually easier to digest and more bioavailable for people with a healthy gut than is plant protein.

@@Protolamna I’m aware that some hack researchers with dubious funding designed a study where they chose to make an assumption that TMAO was linked to cardiovascular disease. However, that was not evidence based, lab based nor was the study even long enough to track any meaningful data to find any cause and effect. Then Beyond Meat took that study and shouted it to the rooftops as “evidence” that their fake meat is better. TMAO is the same TMAO that humans have had for over a million years without cardiovascular disease. That disease has risen steadily and sharply from the moment people started eating seed oils. How can faux meat have better ingredients than beef which is 1 ingredient? Beyond Meat: Water, pea protein isolate, expeller-pressed canola oil, refined coconut oil, rice protein, natural flavors, cocoa butter, mung bean protein, methylcellulose, potato starch, apple extract, pomegranate extract, salt, potassium chloride, vinegar, lemon juice concentrate, sunflower lecithin, beet juice extract, and carrot.

I agree with most in this video, but absolutely couldn't disagree more with the animal protein. Best my blood work has been since I was in my early 20s is right now (45 now). It may not work for everyone but I sure am thankful I'm one of the ones it has.

Good that it worked for you! Hope you're still healthy. But it's good to know that they say that animal protein excretes calcium, oxalate and uric acid in your urine. Which are the main conditions that lead to kidney stones. Maybe there was something else in your diet that helped you stay out of trouble. Enough hydration? Enough citrate in the urine? Low oxalate and uric acid in the urine? Who knows? But I wouldn't play with fire myself 😂.

Well, I have my opinion on these. First, it is not clear about the serving size of each ingredients. You should have put the weight or how many tablespoons are used for each ingredients. Second, all of these oxalates are not really that much of a problem if u can counteract them with some lemons or ACV and some fasting (2-3 day water fasting) as fasting can be considered the best natural medicine in the world to clear toxin and promotes autophagy. Third, animal protein wont give u kidney stone as people who do carnivore diet dont get such problems. Btw I dont do such diet.

Not everyone is a stone former. So carnivore diet is OK if you are Not stone former. Second if you are stone former And still want to go carnivore then add calcium , Lemon juice,ACV, pot And mag citrate supplement And vit k2

How much mm (max) stone can pass thought urine?
@DrRobertChan4 жыл бұрын
5 mm is my rule of thumb that can pass through ureter.
@eb61954 жыл бұрын
Some doc's say 5.5mm has 50%-60% chance of passing and 8.5mm has a 20% chance of passing. IMHO all else being equal I wouldn't try anything over 5mm.
@piosian49144 жыл бұрын
a sharp jagged pointy stone can scrape and/or perforate your ureter, a smooth rounded stone can pass through even the size of soy bean.

Hello Dr Robert Chan. What type of calcium could be taken to supplement with? I have read that calcium can bind oxalates.
@DrRobertChan4 жыл бұрын
hi uberprep, if you can just eat calcium rich foods, that's usually the best. you are correct in that calcium can bind the oxalates in your diet. sometimes people are told to actually cut out calcium in their diet, which doesn't help. Here's a great article by the National Kidney Foundation that goes into a little bit more detail. www.kidney.org/atoz/content/calcium-oxalate-stone

I totally disagree. Most of the vegetables have a lot of oxalates. We need animal protein and fats. Blend a whole lemon in 12oz of distilled or spring water and drink it everyday or squeeze a whole lemon in 12oz of water. Drink another 4oz of water to rinse your mouth. Make sure to get a high amount of vitamin A. Also take D, calcium, magnesium and potassium. Few people know that you have to have vitamin A for D to be more available and effective

Also turmeric & rhubarb are high in oxalates.
@eb61954 жыл бұрын
I was told fresh rhubarb was high in vitamin C & since I had some in the garden I put 1/2 a stock (leaves are poisonous) in some of my green smoothie. Lesson learned, don't do it! I will be ripping out my rhubarb plant. By the way, I read that cooking doesn't remove oxalates. I would re-think eating that strawberry rhubarb pie!

that's so interesting that you have rhubarb. i find that it's such an unusual plant that most people don't utilize it in their cooking.

@DrRobertChan4 жыл бұрын
Buckwheat - 1 cup cooked has 133mg of oxalates. so as long as you try to stay underneath 100 mg with everything you are good. you should try to measure how much a few tablespoons of buckwheat ends up being when cooked.

My mother is very prone to kidney stones but I've never had one. I'm a female weightlifter. I eat a high protein, high low-fat dairy, high complex carb (lots of potatoes, oats, beans, lemtils and rice), moderate fruit/veg, very low-fat diet. I know I have too much caffeine and salt. So far so good...I do drink about 2-2.5 L of fluids a day so maybe I just keep everything flushed out🤔
@arianepenrose9287 Жыл бұрын
I too wonder if flushing is the golden ticket?
@mddell24 Жыл бұрын
Eat Calcium foods in the same meal as Oxalate, this causes Ca to bind to oxalate in the gut and this cannot be absorbed. Hence traditional foods such as Spinach and Ricotta (cheese) roll cancels the high Oxalate in spinach. Caffeine increases fluid through put, flushing helps reduce Ca-oxalate precipitation (crystallization). Salt is fine. Our neurons need the right Sodium-Potassium amount and balance to work. I often wonder if the low-salt craze is/has caused some of the post 2000 decrease in cognition (IQ)... In Roman times people were paid in salt and sprinkled salt on their salad. Leaf vegetables have Potassium but lower Sodium. Hence the words: Salary - Salt - Salad, are all related.

I was about to pass out from the pain, had a fever, but managed to get the pain down. My scan viewed a stone from what I’m told was a 5mm and very nauseous. They prescribed basic pain meds, some bladder helpers, said lots of fluid and no Calcium Oxolate. I was able to pass the stone maybe 2 days later and the stone was literally a rock. I took it back into the hospital and had labs send it out. My pain is now at about a 3 compared to the constant 10 for hours there. Was blocking my bladder from what I understand and now relieving feels so much better. Seeing a urologist next week. Just say no to stones! Plant based diet mostly the past 3 years, hardly any junk no sodas only water. I drink a min a gallon a day and the occasional energy drink for taste purposes. I do a lot of the protein powders for plant based because I’m lactose. Hope this helps

People forget they need to hydrate themselves. We dont drink enough water .....and most people eat too much animal protein. Id rather eat the greens or have a smoothie with pineapple than eat meat. But lemon water every morning will help prevent them big time.
