Great tips, especially #4. As a 10.5 hcp I try to always take enough club to get me somewhere between the hole (90% perfect strike) and the back of the green (100% perfect strike), especially if there are front bunkers or a false front to contend with. The one mistake you didn't include is lack of commitment to the shot. Too often, I'm still thinking about the 3 putt on the previous hole or "maybe I should I be hitting PW instead of GW because of the wind?" or "if I can make 3 more pars, I'll shoot my best round this year" when I'm standing over the ball. Total commitment and focus on this shot and only this shot is what I'm working on.

The 8 and 9 iron pitch shot is highly underused. I know that for 100 yards I can do a 3/4 54 to bring it in high, 1/2 9i to bump and skip and about a 1/3 8i to bump and roll. Practice at the range and figure out your options depending on your situation. Is the front of the green open? Pin in the front? Over a bunker? All different club shots.

Tip #3 is spot on. I sort of figured that one out over time and it has helped a lot. Along with tip #5. Taking a big backswing on short shots just seems to increase your chance of error in my mind. But that means you need to practice those sort of shots too. Good things to do at the range is come up with some method of applying 80%, 60% and so on until you are comfortable with it. Good stuff.

Thanks for pointers. My biggest issue is playing a chip/pitch shot from ~10-15 feet off the green, downhill lie, with minimal green to work with. I play at White Columns and seem to rein into this shot quite a bit. It’s especially difficult to know the right shot when sitting down in the Bermuda or on a tight lie under the trees where the grass hasn’t grown well.

That's it mate, think you way around. 20 Years ago, 8 iron went 160 mts, now only 120, due to age and bad back. So from a 100 in, I can go from a SW to a 8I depending on what I want to do. But i always found the biggest issue for most golfers at that distance is commitment. Cheers

Have a lesson with your pro and the track man. Know your wedge full and half swing distances. You then swing and commit to every shot. Doing this, and practising hard is what finally got me into single figures. More up and downs are much more fun👍

Hey Steve, At times I do the same so I watch my club path to be square not swinging out to in but the opposite, I also cut my follow through so I’m finishing toward the target line. It helps me, commit to the shot. Hope that helps.

Biggest struggle, hitting a lot of "fat shots" especially with wedges. Chips have now 95% become chip n rolls with 7 iron due to no consistency with wedge

As Mr SG states. Narrow stance. Grip down on club, weight a little forward with no transfer of weight during back swing.

My issue is that I notice that with mid to long irons, I start getting a little too "weight shifty" at times. If I can remind myself to stay still and solid, then I'm golden. it happens sometimes, so that's a good thing. Most times, I hit flush

Another mistake people often make not only from 100 yards but with longer shots as well is trying to help the club get the ball in the air. The best way to get the ball in the air is solid contact.

@BatMan-xr8gg3 жыл бұрын
You forgot one thing, Commitment to the shot. I see so many Golfers from a 100 in, fluff shots by decelerating on the down swing, trying to hit the club the right number and they are still unsure. I always change clubs from a 100 out depending on conditions. I can go from a SW to an 8I, and just use the shaft to control the distance. But I always commit to the shot. Otherwise i agree with every thing you have said.

Got a big gap between my PW and 50*, I usally compress the 50 to muster up those extra 8y, but maybe I should practise on a 3/4 PW instead…
@throughblindeyesmyphilippi20153 жыл бұрын
3/4 swing with wedges I'm a big believer in that too. I never hit "down" that is a death move for sure! Sometimes I'll even take a tad more club and open the face just a touch to help activate the bounce and stop from digging which is real easy to do with a wedge especially the 60. I keep my weight pretty centered with all wedges. There really is no need to transfer weight as they are scoring clubs not distance clubs. U agree with all this good job MSG 👏 👍

I'm a right handed 20 handicap golfer my mid range iron shot's always go left hooking or just way left of target. What could be causing this? My drives are pretty good and my 50 yards and in game isn't terrible either. My 2nd shot on long par 4s and 5s is what kills my score because I'll hit my ball in the trees, out of bounds or in the water if that's on the left side of the fairway. This obviously adds at least 1-3 strokes per hole to my score and it happens a lot. Help!

Thats my 52 degree range too, I think our distance 'problem' is called being average (its not a problem). Increasing club head speed and spending $$$ on lessons e.g. learning how to de loft the club at impact - may help. For me, I'm happy being 100 yards on my 52. If I need to hitit further I just take a stronger club. My 7 iron still bites on the green.
