I can honestly say, that in the year of Covid, I took this video to the chipping & pitching area, and worked on this technique 3 days a week for months - and my handicap dropped from 11 to 5. Shortening the swing enough so that you have to load the shaft and actually hit/drive pitch shots, thinner with the lower few groves, is a life-changer.

this video inspired me to work with tyler. i had my first lesson with him yesterday. all i can say is WOW. his enthusiasm and deep knowledge were inspiring. in a short span he had me hitting effortless, half power swings that were going as far as my full effort swing from pre-lesson warmup. tyler said we have to reassess our goals because we can accomplish so much more. i have never been so excited about my game!

I find that a Hogan style, hip centric swing is very effective in the short game. I learned it by using ‘Five Lessons’ as my guide for re-tooling my swing from the feet up in 2008 after 20+ years of trying to swing like Nicklaus as learned from ‘Golf My Way.’ The essence of the Hogan swing is planting the back foot square to the target line, or even a bit turned inward for partial swings, then turning hips, shoulders and hands together in the backswing to create twisting tension and torque in the back leg and hip exactly like twisting a torsion bar. By the time the club shaft is swung up level with the ground in the backswing the resistance of the back foot will load the back leg with the resistance of the hip turn stopping the hips 45° closed to target with the club head extended in the lead arm always in the same place in 3D space ready for the force created by the heave backwards to cock the wrist. It is the loading of the back leg which allows a VERY forceful downswing and rapid acceleration of the club head into the ball. In ‘Five Lessons’ Hogan suggests a drill with mid-iron (e.g. 7 iron) starting with only 1/4 back-swing and 1/4 finish (level to level with the shaft) with the goal of learning how to unleash the wound up tension in the back foot and let to allow hips to drag shoulders and hands back down to the ball forcefully.

Out of every golf video I've ever seen, this has helped me out the most with my game. I started changing my swing thought with imagining a weight on my club head and I'm pulling it through the shot and not hitting at the golf ball.

watching this again and it really is eye opening how many false assertions people have with these type of shots that are covered in this short video. One thing that would be interesting is to have a shot tracer on the before and after swings. It's one thing to see the change in launch angle, but it would be interesting to visually see the change in ball flight as well.

Love this video! It's one of the areas of the game that is so hard to learn by trial and error. You see the pros hitting these shots and think 'how can they get so much spin on sucha a short shot!’ it just doesn't make sense and no matter how steep and aggressive you swing it just doesn't spin. Now I know why. Really great teaching style as well, informative and inclusive without being patronizing.

Excellent video. IMO one of the hardest things for us weekend players to come to grips with is hitting this shot low and with spin. We don't trust our swings enough and really fear that low screamer that flies 20 yds over the green. You can only overcome this with practice!!!

It seems like when Matt caught the ball super clean, the spin really kicked up. Sounds like Tyler recommends this! Also, this would seem to marry up well with the most recent video on the Mizuno wedge fitting. Bounce brought contact lower on the face. So cool to see your fittings and knowledge get verified in real world testing guys!
