In 1991, CEO of one of the UK’s largest high street brands lost £500m in value overnight. He almost caused his company to go bankrupt, which ultimately led to his dismissal and a complete company rebrand. In today’s episode of Nudge, I share his story, explaining the psychology behind why this happened and some messaging advice that every marketer needs to know.

Humility. It humanizes us. Even the braggart can benefit by showing occasional weakness. We want to see some humanity.

I personally learn this strategy as a coping mechanism. I have an excellent personality that put others on edge and make them feel uncomfortable around me because I will always outdo them. It makes me feel lonely and scared. To adapt, I had to start telling people I am not good in anything. It works, but my initial approach was crude. By the time I get wiser to subtly add my imperfections to my personality rather than saying it, it works better.

I’m talking about when I was a teenager. I had nothing to prove to anyone anymore. I think I enjoy being alone now.

Humans are naturally drawn towards sincerity and humility. The brands that succeed using this tactics do so because they appear honest. But it seems Gerald recently learnt the principle and is trying to play psychology. You don’t play psychology. You make it a lifestyle. If it’s a sincere mistake, everyone understands.
