Ho Ho Ho, Happy Holidays! Tis the season for gambling as we play another game of Three Film Monte. Which movie will we watch? The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T? Meet Me in St. Louis? Or Rare Exports? Watch and find out.
In Seen It, we discuss fidelity, desire and Spanish Vampires.
All film footage is used in accordance with fair use and US copyright law. All music in the show is used with full permission of the composer.
Thanks for all the great comments. Keep em coming! If you watch one of the movies we discuss, let us know what you thought of it.
Welcome To The Basement" is a show about watching, discussing and having fun with movies. Matt choses the movie and Craig doesn't know what it is until the cameras start rolling, so none of the discussion or riffing is planned ahead of time.
Movie announced on facebook before every new episode. Get the movie and follow along. We do discuss the entire movie, including the ending, so if you want to avoid spoilers, watch the movie first.

Ted Geisel enjoyed writing the lyrics and making the designs but was devastated when he saw the result. Even after a re-edit. He was simply ahead of his time. You guys are dead on when you say people didn't understand the idea of a trippy cult kids movie in the fifties. The basement scene is one of the most brilliant and strange scenes in any musical!

Thank you so much for reviewing this film! I saw it as a kid over the same weekend as 'Santa Claus Conquers the Martians' and my memory had kind of jumbled the two films together, When I finally re-watched 'SCCtM' as an adult i was very disappointed as all the parts that I liked were actually in '5000 Fingers'. Great show, guys!

As always your analisys blows my mind in its deepness. You really changed my way of watching movies and I owe you one for that. On a "Seen It" note, did you ever watch any of the Don Camillo movies starring Fernandel and Gino Cervi ? They were filmed near my town Parma, home of the Parmigiano Cheese, and I love how the filmmakers depicted the life of my parents after the WWII with some deep thoughts on how it's easy to mix politics, religion and love when you are a honest human being. Greetings from Italy and Merry Christmas.

When seeing Hans Conried I thought That's the guy from I Love Lucy's Hires an English Tutor! It's so adorable seeing his short hair jump around. Was truly delighted seeing him in that final carnival nutcracker outfit. 😃 Question for Dr. Suess fans: is it legal to have murder included in a Dr. Suess story? Not only was there one murder it was a siamese murder when the guy cuts their beard and instantly kills them. 😧

Seuss might not have dealt with Hollywood per se, however he seemed to have a friendly enough relationship with Warner Bros. animation department, collaborating with them on Private Snafu as well a short based on Horton Hatches The Egg, and then after WWII he worked three more times with Chuck Jones.

The other day this movie just popped back in my memory, i remember this movie, I think I was about 9 years old. Anyway like you mentioned the movie was trippy especially for those times. When I first saw it...oh boy was I scared but at the same time I enjoyed it. I never understood what it was about. I never saw the movie again , guess I forgot all about it till now. Thanks for explaining it. Just saw it once when I was little. So I enjoyed your review and would definitely like to watch you both do a screening segment on that classic Syfy 1953 movie INVADERS FROM MARS. That would be awesome. I watched it back in 1966 and it scared me . And I really believed in martians, my two older brothers used to tell me they were real. I was little I didn't know better. They loved teasing their little sister (me). Now am all grown up and know better. Anyway thankyou from Evy in Boston Massachusetts

My absolute favorite feature film based on the works of Dr. Seuss. The problem with most feature adaptations of Dr. Seuss, is they are based on short stories. That means they require a huge amount of padding to get to 90 minutes. I certainly enjoy many of the television shorts that Dr. Seuss worked on, such as "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" with Boris Karloff, a lot better then feature films like "The Grinch" and "The Lorax".

It's a wonderfully odd film that I saw when I was a few times between ages 5 and 10 years old. It's one of those films, like Dr. Zeuss' books in general, that have a number of levels of meanings that children and adults can appreciate on many different levels. And to be frank, as bizarre as this film was for me as a kid, it was no way as "scary" or as weird as "The Wizard of Oz." I mean, those flying monkeys are enough to mess with any kid's head, let alone the squashed witch under Dorothy's home and her feet rolling up as the "ruby slippers" magically appear on Dorothy's feet.
