My dad had a 706 that had that problem. The return on that unit went in the bottom of the tank so ih used a ball style check valve. After awhile the little ball rusts and gets stuck. Took the tractor to the local ih dealer and they insisted we needed to rebuild the pump. Unknown to us the pump shop told the dealer when they took the pump apart there was nothing wrong with it and to replace the return check valve. Dealer said go ahead with the rebuild and over 1000 bucks later the tractor ran the same. The check valve was about 20 dollars new from ih.

If it happens again I think there should be a check ball in the return fitting at the pump that can get plugged with shit and stuck. Worst case scenario loosen the timing inspection plate on the side to relieve the pressure to get it to where you need to go.

There is a little filter screen and check valve ball on the top in take side in the injector pump. I had a John Deere do that to me John Deere mechanics said I needed new pump that the screen is not there when I cleaned it the tractor ran like new. You have to take the pipe off then unscrew that piece it goes into it will look like a metal coffee filter. KZbin rebuilding a John Deere injector pump and it will show where that is.
