Episode 229 of Mike Finnegan's Garage is all about making big time progress on my 1961 Cadillac Coupe DeVille because we finally have the Nelson Racing Engines 540ci twin-turbo big-block Chevrolet engine. We wasted no time in swinging the Dart engine block, Master Motorsports cylinder heads and NRE Alien intake maninold between the fenders of the Mac Daddy Caddy only to find out that fitting this thing under the stock hood is gonna be harder than it looks!

Keep up the great work, cant wait to see the caddy make some progress and get on the road.

100% agree, 2 smaller intercoolers, on either side of the rad. Then you can have fun building or at least designing a custom intake adaptor to go with that sweet intake. The rad and a/c condenser will have more room and probably breath better, and reduce possible overheating issues if you get stuck in traffic.

A common mod on f+bodies is to use a Nissan wiper motor. It bolts up, you do loose delay unless you get creative with the wiring. It is much smaller than the GM one. Don't know if it is an option here but may want to pull the wiper motor and go junkyard craw and see if you can find a smaller one that doesn't require modifications.

@port nut best bet is to find a face book group or an old forum for the specific car, someone has probably found a good option. The next is to take the wiper motor and go to pull a part or a junkyard that will let you walk around with it and find one.

Something I like to do when installing transmissions is to find 2 shoulder bolts that match the bell housing bolt thread pitch and cut the heads off and cut a slot in the cut end. You can thread them in the block as an alignment dowel and use it to guide the transmission into place until you get other bolts in. Once the other bolts are in you can use a flat blade screw driver to remove the home made dowels and install your final bolts.

Mike my thoughts are take out the wiper motor and linkage and use a wiper setup from like a 30s or 40s hotrod that uses a motor under each blade. Then you can cut (oops massage) the firewall to make things fit.As for turbo placement Im thinking behind the tires because of weight balance.Take a close look at Tom Bailey's car or Jeff Lutz car. Then you can get engine back and have the room in front for what you need.

Dunno how I missed this episode but glad to see you moving ahead on the Caddy. Lost a buddy of mine to the Rona just over a year ago that had a black Caddy really close to this body style. His car was the four door hardtop version in black with black interior. We used to pile in that car as kids on the weekends to go eat ice cream when his dad owned the car. Usually ended up being around a 100 mile road-trip to some out of the way small town to get ice cream or go fishing and usually made a whole day of it. Always got to learn some sort of local history from his dad pertaining to places he had used his excavation equipment or from the locals around the coffee shops or gas stations. It’s a shame that we don’t see people doing that sorta stuff with kids or even in general very much anymore. On a similar note, his dad having equipment was what lead to me learning to run a dozer at 12 years old. Still running equipment all these years later. Really quick tip on the mid plate, ran into the same deal on a tube chassis car. Realized really quickly how handy studs or all thread was for that exact situation. Throw a couple of studs in the block where your bell housing bolts go to hold the mid plate and trans till you get dowels. Anyway good luck with this one, kinda glad it didn’t end up being some double frame rail, round tube sort of build that later on ends up being mostly fiberglass and lexan covered.

All things considered MIke, I think you should run methanol, put the turbos in the gap behind the control arms and call KSR about how they did the dual fuel on Mullet for Cleetus. You'll have clearance for the A/C condenser, smaller headers so less heat soak under the hood and more potential to manage that heat. When it's done it'll look super clean and be very functional. Good luck sir!

Very functional. You clearly have never raced or owned a methanol car, have you? It's the absolute dumbest idea for what he is doing. The maintenance associated with methanol is huge compared to E85. On top of that the car is not a full race car like Mullet and it is only certified for 8.5. He wanted a car that he can cruise, jump in for fun, don't worry too much about and just do fun stuff with. So why on earth should he run a fuel that will make more power than the chassis will handle or that he will need? That whole idea stems from yet another Finnegan idea where he does not think things through and make some rather dumb choices.

A true mechanic doesn't allow excuses to stop progress. Remember, most gifted mechanics always work alone and never hesitate on certain tasks. To get the dowels out you heat the surrounding area and cool the dowels. The heat difference releases the dowels efficiently. Remember young ones, we did all this work by ourselves and with basically no tools or calculating materials. This was the good old days when things were strong and built right 👍. Days were D.C. Motors would last a lifetime on equipment. The old lathing machines during WWII are still being used in shops around the world still because they were built so well and strong. You can build mountains if you put your mind to it. You don't need fancy degrees or tools to be successful, just grit and determination. Thanks.

Another easy way around the dowel issue is if you have extra bellhousing bolts take 2 of them cut the heads off and thread them into 2 level holes one on each side slide everything into place get other bolts installed. When shugged down remove the headless bolts and replace them with the bolts you intend to use. It worked great for us in the army changing flywheels without pulling the engine or xmsn.

Drop the engine down and back and run it on E85. FMIC will have the most room to plumb.

I am absolutely in love with this car. The Nelson engine is a great choice, in my opinion. I've been following him for a long time.

Hi Mr. Mechanic, I'm a huge Cadillac fan, been one for over forty years and thanks for building this beauty. One request, no floor shifter. Cadillacs aren't Cadillacs unless they have a column shifter. Everyone goes weak and wimps out and puts in a floor shifter on a Cadillac?? Cadillac is about luxury and comfort for everyone in the car. Column shifter with bench seat is the ultimate luxury, always has been. In the 50's these cars came with wet bars in the glove box to entertain clients or friends. The 50's & 60's was about pure luxury or speed. Cadillac had luxury and speed. Mopars would test their performance lined up against a Cadillac. I remember the old days. A great time for cars then. Thanks for the video 📸

In the future drill a 1/8 inch hole through the dowell, then drill the end out just enough to tap it for a small grease zirt. then you can take a grease gun and remove them any time you need to. I was a skilled trade machine repairman at Cummins engine for 30 years and this trick save a lot of work and tine as when we got a machine indicated in and torqued all the bolts we would ream the hole to the correct size insert the dowell and check the alingment and then remove the dowells so that when they crashed the machine the nevt time all we had to do was loosen the bolts line the dowell holes put them in and retorque the bolts and pull them back out and we had every thing back where it was supposed to go. This wil also work for indicating a bell housing to an engine, you can ream the holes to a dowell size and no need to pull them untill you need to change a bell housing.

I'm literally dealing with the same issues in my 71 c10. Just not intercooler issues. There is a fine line between what you want and can do and it's generally the thickness of a piece of paper and your last sain thought. Personally I would go e85 firewall turbos 2 smaller air to water up front behind headlights. Then you will have 2 heat exchangers ac and intercooler. The intercooler heat exchanger could even be done with trans coolers as you only really need it for the street drive.

I hear ya on working alone Mike. I love it that way but it has plenty of challenges. I just wish I had your even temperament. I do not! And when I blue flame it usually cost the hell out of me. Loving this build and at 72 I am excited, believe it or not. Thanks!

id go turbos behind the wheels to reduce underhood heat, air to water units forward of the wheels for compact packaging and maybe less volume between the turbo and intake, then plumb as much heat exchanger as you have room for in the front and make up the rest with copper tube (free heat sink) under the car to a reservoir in the back, maybe get fancy with a liquid to liquid unit in the back, so a glycol mix can run in the primary system and be maintenance free (forget to winterize and it freezes), but you can still ice the secondary down for pulling extra heat on those long runs if you still plan for top speed runs, not just drag and drive

Love the build Mike! The car is going to be off the charts cool. Have you considered a rear mounted AC system? The trunk certainly has plenty of room. That would free up a good amount of space in front of the engine for the intercooler. I agree methanol for a street car is a major hassle. I like the turbos behind the front wheels as this will help weight bias and, like you said keeps the turbos away from the cooling system. Looking forward to seeing the progression of this build!
