Evergreen tree symbolizes, no loss of life during construction
@QImpact4 ай бұрын
Yes, that is true in many cases. The origin of using an evergreen tree, known as a topping tree, on the completion of the skeleton of a building structure was in Scandinavia over a thousand years ago. It signalled that the completion party was about to begin. The tradition continues to this day to signify the completion of the basic structure (e.g. a high-rise building reaching its final height). For some builders, it signifies that no one died during the construction.

Connecting to highway 401 is a huge deal, its the most used highway in Canada and is the fastest direct path to Toronto. But more significantly for locals the footpath means that we can cross for day trips without spending more time looking for parking than it would have taken to walk.

The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel can't accept hazardous shipments. The Ambassador Bridge can't handle the capacity of traffic (quite a bit is routed through Port Huron and the Blue Water Bridge). Ambassador is in a state of disrepair (I still have a rivet from the bridge that almost beaned my head back in 2000). Just wander under the bridge with binoculars and see how many rivets are gone. It's a mess. GHB is really needed to help with the traffic.

I am fully in favor of the GHI Bridge. Not only will it help relieve traffic congestion for those crossing between Canada and the US, it will also increase the element of competition which after all is the basis of capitalism. Additionally, as this video points out, commercial traffic will not automatically be forced to use residential streets at either end of the bridge but will rather have direct access to major highways which will benefit the majority of bridge users. Plus, aesthetically speaking, it is a beautiful structure. I live just outside Toronto, Ontario and plan to drive to Windsor for the sole purpose of driving over this bridge.

As a Detroiter, the bridge should increase the trade between the two countries significantly. Many folks don’t want to deal with crossing the Ambassador bridge. It just takes too long. Nice job on the video. This bridge connects 2 things for me. First I've delivered freight into Canada for years. I've been over the Ambassador Bridge 100's of times. Same with the Blue Water bridge in Port Huron to Sarnia. Then figure in as a hockey fan, Gordie Howe was a hero of mine as a kid. I wasn't old enough to see him play for Detroit, but I got his autograph one time back when I was little. I'm glad to see this bridge up. I no longer deliver freight, but the delays often made trips to or from Canada a pain. Add to that the owner of the Ambassador Bridge is a crook. One of the freight companies I worked for was owned by that guy. I had to sue them to get paid. This was back in the 90s. I think he passed away a few years ago, but his family is still crooked.

@jakeryan45454 ай бұрын
The city of Detroit is already experiencing a revival of sorts. I don't think the bridge will be some panacea in making any drastic changes. I think Detroiters learned long ago that things aren't currently as bad as many think but at the same time it will take a long time to become "good" compared to other cities (or the mythical 50s) and expecting some magical fix is kind of foolish. Will probably help a bit for logistics companies and the like. But having better infrastructure is always a good thing. I'm especially looking forward to the pedestrian / bike crossing.
@ricobarth4 ай бұрын
@@markdc1145 If it's more tolerable and convenient, then more goods will cross. That's why you improve infrastructure in the first place.

From the plans I have seen so far, the new bridge looks spectacular ... and having "choices" for crossing the river between the two countries also makes sense. I find it interesting to learn that ONE man gained all the funds from the use of a single bridge. No wonder that family wants to continue having the only bridge. To that family I say, Welcome to progress! Also the naming of the new bridge is a reminder of the sport both countries hold in common, and of a player who, although deceased, remains "Mr. Hockey" at least to MY generation!
