The truth is I didn’t always love reading. I preferred video games, playing sport (tennis footage) or listening to music growing up. It’s because I was always introduced to non fiction books at school and college. I didn’t love reading about fantasy and imagination that wasn’t grounded in reality. I didn’t know that then but it became more apparent as my father introduced me to self help, wisdom and autobiography books. Then I was introduced to Blinkist.
Right now Blinkist has a special offer just for our audience. Go to blinkist.com/jayshetty to start your free 7 day trial and get 25% off of a Blinkist Premium membership.

I'm glad you suggested Blinklist before reading the book itself as a way to create foundational awareness, instead of using it instead of reading! When I began this video and heard you express your preference for non-fiction over fiction, I paused the video for a moment to contemplate the difference between the two, and personally came to the conclusion that good fiction is superior - briefly, because it must show, and that is closer to reality where knowledge is chaotic and truth is uncertain, shaped by different possibilities and perceived in nuance based on these things. In a world almost possessive about knowledge I think we have the tendency to prefer to be told things, and this is somewhat reductive. We collect ideas, truths based on paths already chosen. This is like taking the path from the hotel to the beach. It's fine, however it takes valuable experiential learning and counterbalancing from the process. Not everyone necessarily does this, but its easy to do. Because fiction relies on developing a paracosm of a sort, or microcosm if you like, it ultimately relies on the power of play and is hugely important in seeing how these ideas hold up. I think it acts as a method against over intellectualisation and reduction, and I think it does this by requiring the reader to rely on her/his intuition, own thoughts; forcing (or encouraging) them to play. I think this is super important to comprehension. However, one has to trust and accept the uncertainty and the intuition and the more convoluted processing needed to engage with information in this way. Ultimately, the path is personalised by the convolution. Of course, there is nothing wrong with picking a more direct route to information, and nothing wrong with non fiction, my shelves are packed with that too. You've provided me with strong grounds to get hold of Blinklist because used foundationally it sounds really good! I used to be quite worried people wanted fast cuts to reading and really so much of understanding is about the journey. Okay, I've had my waffles now.

Hello Jay, thank you very much for sharing these Ideas, it's really gonna help a lot. I would also like to share something: I was never a book-reading kind of guy until I read 'The winning way 2.0' by Harsha Bhogle. I tried reading few books earlier as well of various genre but I never felt that excited about reading. The main reason why I loved reading the winning way was that I got to learn a lot from it, tried applying it in my life and I could actually see the results. So that motivated me to read more books. The main idea was to learn something new from reading. The next book that I am currently reading now is 'Think like a Monk' by you. Thank you very much for the book, it's brilliantly awesome. Now using the ideas that you shared in this video I would really like to recollect what I read in the winning way. Thanks again 😀
