FYI, saw a lot of comments asking why not use it as-is, you gave a good answer about the inverters, but there is an inverter that you can get second hand pretty cheap that supports up to 450vdc - Solaredge hub. maybe on your next adventure you will consider it :P That's what i'm gonna use

Professional ESS installer here. Really solid work connection wise. I couldn’t tell if this was going in your house or an RV. But one thing I’d do is encase the Li-Ion cells in something less flammable than a wooden box. If you ever have a thermal runaway or short, that wooden encasement is tinder for a battery fire. Some jurisdictions here where I’m at in CA are requiring fire suppression systems in homes and businesses where storage systems are. The industry is actually moving away from Li-Ion. Great work tho!

@@kr-lp2nj Yes most manufacturers are, but the building departments got a bad taste from li-ion so the codes are becoming really strict. They are even getting tough on installing them in your garage without expensive fire alarms.

@@magikplanofficial This is correct. Getting the permitting for my 24kWh ESS was a nightmare that went on for months after the rule changes in June or July 2021. Absolute nightmare. Even though I was installing Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries, I would up having to install them outside, instead of inside the garage where I preferred to have them. They said in order to install inside the garage, I would either have to retrofit my entire home for sprinklers or have a "state approved" heat detector, which at the time of my installation in Jan '22, simply did not exist.

@@magikplanofficial LFP is still lithium ion lol. Yes it is much safer, but the industry isn't "moving away from lithium ion". It's just evolving to use safer li ion that uses safer materials (at the cost of less energy density)

Everyone should be made to watch a house burn to the ground to quite get the flavour of it. I have seen two [No I did not start them]. All my electronics designs and builds are done putting fire safety above all because of what I saw with those two houses. It scared the hell out of me. I did a lot of work on hybrid vehicles 40 years ago and saw what happens with rogue batteries. While I admire what this lad is doing with his clean install and beautiful workmanship, I would be putting this in a steel closet lined with cement sheeting so it has NO CHANCE of burning down anything. You could then fit that inside you garage. I admire you work and professionalism in fitting this Zai. Best wishes from Australia.

This panel can put out close to 100 watts kzbin.infoUgkxOqI2yqX0XVrhR2BMJciTWrHJpG8FhJyg when positioned in the appropriate southernly direction, tilted to the optimal angle for your latitude/date, and connected to a higher capacity device than a 500. The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle.The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts.If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.

Nice work.. I started my power wall about 5 years ago using mostly Lap top cells, Now nearly all are gone.. don't be tempted to use laptop cells, they are discarded for a reason. I'm up to about 20Kw but that's where it stops as the solar shed is full. Its my Daily top up for my Tesla.
@TheRealDogfart
@TheRealDogfart 2 жыл бұрын
There's enormous battery capacity for what appears to be a relatively small load. You're feeding that small load center with what looks like #10 SO cord, using (14) low amperage (probably) circuit breakers. It seems like the battery is overkill but I like it. Battery inverters like Tesla's Powerwall are too expensive and undersized IMO. Thanks for the video.

Hi , I am very impressed with the quality of the work and the enthusiasm that you have shown .. I would worry about the cells going on fire. I would like to see the batteries build into a metal enclosure and away from the main house for safety. It would be great to see somebody take the original battery enclosure and modify it and fit it as it is like a fire wall only larger.
@joanmitorrens353

The metal enclosure is a great idea. Keeping away the batteries from the house... its almost imposible. You need to much cable section for that amount of current/voltage. And every meter you add, you have to increase that section making it economicaly inviable.

Do you think it’s a good idea to have that many un encased LiPo cells inside a residence? I’d be thinking of having it in an auxiliary building. Were the buss/jumpers all fed from the same end instead of diagonally? Gloves are a good idea but safety glasses can save your eyes. That much potential can vaporize a good chunk of metal if you have a moment of distraction.

Was thinking the same thing. Just saw a news story of Tesla power wall fire. If Tesla can’t get it perfect, we all should be taking more care. I can recall the diy ebike scene building batteries and chargers, discovering battery fires. Then people realised batteries needed to be charged in fire safe containers. Old bbqs, steel drums, concrete bunkers, non flammable fibre board fire barriers. Some people even set up sand bags as fire extinguishers to smother the flame and smoke.

Interesting on these conversation of battery packs. I wonder why , though, why people don't just use those nice weather proof cases and plug into it as the car would. Then do step down after that. Put case in free air or a ground coffin to keep battery cool. Searched and didn't find anyone taking advantage of this.
@ZaiFuchigami
@ZaiFuchigami 3 жыл бұрын
Its been done before but the main limiting factor is cost. At full pack voltage the output connector will read around 400VDC, at this voltage its very difficult to find inverters and chargers that can handle such high voltages. Almost all battery systems max out at around 48VDC nominal so finding relatively affordable (under 10K) inverters and chargers is easier.

@@ZaiFuchigami ok that would make sense. I had thought that they had made the level 2 chargers a two way connection. This was talked a lot over in the Uk, using the car to balance the grid. Guess it didn’t happen . I had figured everything was basically done.

@@ZaiFuchigami I still think using the metal case and re-doing the electrical connections inside would be the way to go.. specially because those batteries can explode and catch fire when punctured, overcharged OR overheated. That wood case is not a good idea.
@ZaiFuchigami
@ZaiFuchigami 3 жыл бұрын
Puncture is pretty much impossible as it’s stationary and there isn’t something really sharp that could penetrate the cells. Overcharge is also unlikely as both the BMS and charge controller would have to fail to let the voltage get above 4.2v/cell. If you’ve seen any Tesla fire you can see that the steel casing doesn’t really help to stop it.

In their original seal pack separated from each other liquid coolen, fire was still able to burn down a metal car. Video show a wooden container box with batteries compact together. I can see bad thing could happen if one cell get fry causing a chain reaction. I would separate each unit by a least 6" in well ventilated metal box outside away from the house.

You're right about the long return on investment. But I didn't do this to save money. If that were the goal, this would be the worst thing I could do. I did this to be independent from the grid and to have a more reliable and cleaner supply of power, which are issues in my area. Technically there were no markups or installation costs because I build it and installed it myself. Haven't done any major repairs or maintenance in over 2 years.

Looks like a Fire 🔥 Trap Set Up. Those batteries where housed in a metal case with coolant for a reason. No space between batteries or cross ventilation..... people will see what 😳 you've done and think it is normal, except able and adequate.. It Is Not !!!!! Pretty clear you have no permits if this is in a building!!!!
@ZaiFuchigami
@ZaiFuchigami 3 жыл бұрын
I've said this in many comments before. The battery modules don't need cooling as they do not get hot or even warm. The reason it has coolant when installed in the car is that the motors pull hundreds of kilowatts when running so that cells need to be cooled down.. So since I'm pulling 100X less power than when it was in the car, the batteries are not stressed and don't heat up. The main reason why the modules are housed in a steel casing with the titanium plate at the base, is to prevent any punctures from damaging the pack and to keep water and dust out. of course it also serves as structural rigidity for the chassis and some fire containment. When in building there's no chance that a puncture will occur and its also shielded from rain and dust. Its not a fire trap. I've designed multiple layers of safety in the system.

Why take the battery packs out of the Tesla OEM container? Would you be able to create the same end result? Thinking about have the battery pack on a floor of a BOX Truck Overlander Build

I appreciate that :) I got the pack on Yahoo Auction Japan for 700,000 Yen at the time. Shipping included. With the current exchange rate that's about 5k USD.

What about cooling of the batteries? You do not have a cooling loop and Li-Ion batteries can get rather warm if being charged or discharged.

I'm having a hard time believing this is $80 a kwh. Where did you buy it from? The modules alone go for $130]-$1500 a piece equalling $300 a kwh.

It seemed like a silly thing to do, and it was mostly a propaganda ploy for Tesla. This is very expensive and costly.

Lol a propaganda ploy? I bought the pack from Yahoo auction here in Japan where demand is essentially nonexistent. That’s why the whole pack was so cheap at around 5,800USD. It’s from a P85 which is 80Kwh new. But i tested the modules and it had 70kWh remaining capacity. $5,800 / 70kWh = $85/kWh

@@ZaiFuchigami demand might be nonexistent but so is supply. Why would there be a tesla pack there and if it wasn't in Japan the shipping cost alone would thosands.

Randy Bobandy I was replying to the other guy. And the pack was from a wreaked Model S that was sold and driven in Japan. The battery was removed from the car and I bought it. I also live in Japan.

Using metal screw driver inside battery pack..... uh you do know they make all sorts of plastic tools for that... ceramic tweezers for non conductivity... and many many others....hell I even use dollar store Popsicle sticks, I forget the cell spec's for Tesla's 21700 cells... but I do know the Samsung 40T Cells can discharge at 35 amps.... I highly recommend Silicone wire, high strand count, high conductivity, low resistance wire for others who do similar.. Daly BMS..... for some of the higher amperage I'd recommend welding cables... as they are much more flexible because of the copper multi strands....2 to 1 safety ratio... if you need 100 amps... build for 200 amps.... Luna Cycles carries heavy gauge wire 4g, 6g that would be good for applications like this, but I'm sure you can find it online, double wall or glue type heat shrink tubing for outdoor applications, IF done right, provides a waterproof seal..
