While it’s coincidental that episode 7 in many series are great, it’s a nice way to talk about what “bottle episodes” are.

After reading Dan da Dan you find that the combat parts are the flair that keep most interesting in between nuggets of great emotional stories. Not all are as hard as this one. But I found myself crying in multiple of them. I’m happy the anime is doing so good, cause the manga so far has gripped me!
@OhmIsFutile

I'm actually kinda disappointed by the combat... it's a whole lot of anime nonsense. I actually appreciate the human relation aspect more. Them exploring japanese folklore, myths, and such in the form of turbogranny and how she was ultimately born of women being assaulted was great. Then episodes 8 & 9 dropped and I cringed pretty hard. I suppose I should have seen it coming given how the series starts...

At the risk of paraphrasing some of what you said, one thing that to me makes episode 7 feel like a very organic/natural direction for a Dandadan episode to take rather than too jarring a departure in tone; is that the initial episodes of the series firmly established that humans don't simply become yokai by chance or minor events, it takes something horrific, tragic, etc. So it makes sense that if we delve into such a yokai's origins, its going to have some heavy themes.

when you mentioned "stuck in an elevator and going through the 7 stages of grief" all i could think about is this scene from the show Babylon 5 where the characters Londo and G'Kar are stuck in an elevator and they essentially each go through the stages of grief, one of them in reverse. it's in Season 3 Episode 2 and it's fantastic. this episode is half bottle episode and great fun. if you haven't seen the show, i would highly recommend it, the writing is excellent.

I never thought about the Ep. 7 change of pace. I had to relook at one of the shows I watched in the past (Oshi No Ko) and definitely the Torrance House scandal (not describing it cuz spoilers) happened in Ep. 6 and Ep. 7. I think it might be that 6 episode rule. If a new TV show or in our case anime made it past the minimum episode count for an initial season then the writers can start to flex their creativity. Using what characters they have with the limited screen time they are allowed from the production.

Dan da Dan manages to pull off that balance between the goofiest levels of shounen action comedy and incredibly deep emotional storytelling on a level that I dont think any show has managed since One Piece. Episode 7 was an absolute gutpunch in a way I did not expect from a show that up to that point had been this chaotic and honestly, goofy. It was incredibly well done, and honestly kinda nauseating to watch, but it made you want to keep going anyway. The last time I remember a show hurting me like this was probably Made in Abyss, which is also fantastic, but I find hard to rewatch specifically because of that one episode, and I expect Dan da Dan is gonna be very similar in that regard.

Dandadans ep 7 I think was a testament to the talent on this show, and how far they can go with visual storytelling. Cause I don’t think this backstory hits even close to as hard in the manga, in my opinion. Arcane ep 7 however, took an already well written story and somehow heightened it. Some of the things said in the show resonate with me so much and ep 7 had a lot of it. Not to mention how visually amazing it all was, it was an absolutely beautiful episode.

I feel like Dandadan is incredibly silly at its core because it intends to dive into and explore yokai , which almost always have very tragic, very real backstories. So it builds the expectation that its going to be a light hearted, fun, and balanced Shonen/Shojo story, so it can occasionally explore very real and powerful stories through yokai lore. Its wacky so it has the license to be serious because you know the next episode we are going to go back to talking about missing testicles, and why its wrong for a young girl to base her initial love expectations and experience on her fathers collection of magazines and videos in his study.

A very good discussion on the bottle episode concept… However there were many glaring issues in the arcane bottle episode. One of many is the subversion of the stakes and characters in season 1. As much as it is writer “freedom” it should still keep the tone of the overall story Zuko didn’t become good in one episode, but we did see his perspective. Arcane wastes this episode and the impact it could have brought.

@Thegoldenringsyt
@Thegoldenringsyt Ай бұрын
Dandadan is an amazing show though, I highly recommend you give it a chance. Honestly, the fan service isn't that bad. Sure, the premise of Okarun losing his reproductive organs is slightly... Kinky, and bizarre, but it doesn't come off in a way that feels like they wanted you to feel attracted to the character and it didn't feel very perverted. The rest of the episodes are more normal than the first few in that aspect, and they go on to use nudity and other slightly taboo themes to enhance the humor. Honestly, if you watch Dandadan and get used to its vibe, you'll feel it's much less fanservicey that something like MHA/BNHA, because in those shows the fanservice goes AGAINST the story. In Dandadan, the elements that would feel weird in another show work FOR the story, therefore don't worsen your viewing experience. If you have seen clips of Dandadan out of context, you might feel like the show is extremely perverted, but when you watch it in context you start realizing it's an action packed romcom about a girl and a boy in a world full of aliens and ghosts.

This is not an accusation rather a genuine question: Also SPOILER ALERT and trigger warning! How can you continue watching a show that has so explicit (almost) rape scenes with underage characters. I'm referring to the first episode where the female lead is exposed down to her underwear and shown so direct, in that body position and in a so heavely sexualized way. That is just unnecessary especially because she is underage. And then later basically the same thing with the male lead, when they're trapped in the high school. Where he is completely naked and again about to be raped. At that point that is no longer telling a story about something horrible, because it is way too explicit and seems more like a sexual fantasy. These experiences of the characters are also not really discussed and processed in the story itself, which further seems weird to me. They could have just adjusted the camera angles and made earlier cuts to not show these underaged characters that exposed, which for me would have solved the issue to a large degree. I also think the characters and their interactions are brilliantly written, but I just can't ignore these two really uncomfortable scenes, which make me worried that the writers and production team play down rape (again with underaged leads...).

Maybe I’m have seen too many goofy anime just shoehorning sad backstory to “bait” sad feeling from the viewers (looking at you demon slayer), so I just don’t like the incredibly drastic change in tone from Dan Da dan. Like I saw the “bad” character sad story becoming a recurrent theme the moment we know turbo baba’s backstory.
@Canal-01b
@Canal-01b Ай бұрын
Yeah I had the same issue. The moment the whole sequence started I just had the ''uuugh for fucks sake'' reaction and couldn't care less about soon to be dead spirit's backstory. Just 10 minutes ( or however long it was) of why am I seeing this.
@PequenoSegundaEtapa
@PequenoSegundaEtapa Ай бұрын
Well I think there are two sides to this. Demon Slayer's issue is that they're not only irrelevant to the overall plot, but also irrelevant to our characters. Tanjiro can only reinforce his main plot driving circumstance so many times, and they do nothing to help with other character's growth. Dandadan uses these to highlight the main characters and reframe their own conflict (to our characters). There would be no reason for Momo to want to work with Turbo Baba if she didn't have that context, for instance. The others have their own point, but I can't go into detail without spoiling. It's just less about "I should care about this spirit" and more about letting our characters use the context to grow.
@siamath9954
@siamath9954 Ай бұрын
@@PequenoSegundaEtapaThe backstories in Demon Slayer are maybe irrelevant to the plot, but they are integral to the story. All of them show different aspects of what violence and suffering do to people. Those that rise above it, and those that are consumed by it. But also those that actively choose to do evil. Each of the backstories are sad, yeah, but each in a different way and each with different results. They each speak to theme of the story in their own ways.
@PequenoSegundaEtapa
@PequenoSegundaEtapa Ай бұрын
@@siamath9954 The problem is that they all revolve around the same idea and yield the same result. We're not going into a new backstory to enforce a different lesson or explore an entirely different theme, we're just retreading the exact premise you're talking about. There's very little in Demon Slayer that plays with the status quo instead of just maintaining exactly what's expected. I agree *slightly* that Silky's backstory (in relation to Silky, not Aira) would be the most similar to something like Demon Slayer's, but the rest of them play with the idea in ways that actually make them engaging. Characters actually feel like they lived their own lives up to that point instead of just being a story in service of the themes. I really can't say much else without spoiling, though.
@siamath9954
@siamath9954 Ай бұрын
@@PequenoSegundaEtapa But that's the thing they ARE all different. They're not all "oh sad backstory", each one getting into a different aspect of the theme. When it comes to the Hashira it's mostly about how they deal with the massive trauma they have suffered (each informing their character in a different way) while with the demons it's about how it relates to the theme of innocence vs guilt. I'm on my phone rn, so I'm not gonna spell them all out, but each demon backstory we get highlights a different aspect of that

Title is shit. I like your vids but this is pretentious af: why the 7th? it's the start of the second arc or the point of plot unraveling; 12 episodes divided in two halves of six, the second set starts on the 7th. This isn't a new thing either, this has happened forever in anime. If the show has closer to 24 episodes, the midpoint start on the 13th. There, 12 minute vid abridged on 77 words.
