Playing the Othello puzzle until the game crashes has big "Rimmer beating the Skutters at checkers by waiting until they have to go back on shift and declaring victory by default" energy

The microscope puzzle is devilishly hard, but seems like so much fun. Great job beating it! :)

I have zero clue how I managed to beat it though

The best guess at the floor tile puzzle is that it follows a pattern that we see latter, namely that choosing an action sets a precedent and breaking that precedent triggers a failure. For the available rooms, seeing that cutscene opened some more doors. For the infamous bacteria puzzle, once upon a time I was quite good at that, I could win maybe 1 in 4 or 5 attempts, best I can figure was that the AI's goal-seeking algorithm prioritizes maximum score over a few turns (rumored to be as many turns as it could check in a specific amount of time, making a higher clock speed a disadvantage) but it didn't value bacteria in "protected" positions over "exposed" ones, so you can usually get it to bite into loops where you trade 3 exposed for 2 protected over and over and win due to the AI not being able to get at your back ranks.

The tile puzzle confused me back when I played this, but watching it now I think I understand the rule: Purple = 3, orange = 2, blue = 1. When you select the first tile in a group, its color determines how large the group will be, and then it doesn’t matter what color the other tiles in the group are. So the initial purple tile always starts a group of three tiles. Once you’ve selected two more tiles, the NEXT tile you select will determine how large the next group is (and once you’ve selected it, the prior group will fall away). And then I guess by continuing the logic that only the first tile in a group “counts,” the goal is to make the exit tile be the first tile in a group (that is, have the previous group fall away as you step on to it.)
@burtcolkАй бұрын
If they had made it so that after stepping on e.g. a purple tile, the next two tiles you clicked on fell away IMMEDIATELY, this would have been so much more intuitive. But I guess I would also would have exposed that the puzzle is pretty much trivial.

This is absolutely right :) People on my Discord worked it out as well and I have an explanation in the final video in this series - I haven’t seen any guide on the internet mention this, it’s all “just do this path and it somehow works”!
@burtcolkАй бұрын
@@DavidXNewton Nice, I look forward to it! I’m enjoying the series. A lot of the puzzles in this game seem to have been lifted straight from the Sam Loyd Cyclopedia and other old puzzle collections, so I suspect there’s probably a more sensible original variant of this puzzle, and they just happened to implement it in a way that made it totally inscrutable.

Supposedly the infection player's algorithm is limited by the speed of the CPU, so it was a bit easier when the game was first released. Poetic, given your explanation of brute forcing puzzles in the last video!

I never understood that floor tile puzzle, even after looking up the solution.

Nobody seems to! I’ve checked multiple guides now and none of them seem sure - the most specific I’ve seen is “step on a purple tile every three moves” but I didn’t
@TangoBunnieАй бұрын
@@DavidXNewton Yeah, it's one of those puzzles that makes no sense because the game doesn't communicate its goal properly. The goal is to make the last arrow fall when you click on it. If it doesn't fall, any normal person would think "Wait, why did I lose? Surely falling into the pit is a bad thing?!" but the puzzle resets itself with no indication of why. As an aside, if you try to turn away from this puzzle, you do actually fall in the pit and somehow end up in the library.

That floor tile puzzle is baffling! I was wondering if 1-2-3 meant stepping on groups of 1 colour for 1 block, 1 colour for 2 blocks, then the third colour for 2 blocks, but that wouldn't have worked. I think the solution may have been to step in three block groups of two colours only?

Did the video have a color filter on the floor puzzle from the beginning? If not you may have some light color blindness. I was able to see the different the whole time

He confirmed his color blindness before and showed some of the tools he sometimes uses to help him out somewhere in the depths of the channel iirc.

KZbin's AI comment replier thing suggested this comment: "Oh god, I know... I wanted to get rid of some of it in the edit, but I couldn't bring myself to cut out all the schlorping!" I could definitely have brought myself to cut out more of the schlorping D: They could have at least given us more than one sound effect...

Giving this comment another shot - I think it's hiding my posts whenever I reply to someone rather than make a new comment. The floor puzzle: You have to make the final arrow fall when you click on it. Purple makes tiles fall three steps later. So, if you click a purple, and then the third tile you click is the final arrow, the final arrow falls and you win.
