Also, because it doesn't use internal carriage, it can carry some massive weapons that won't fit into an F-35 and if you are going to externally carry your weapons, there is no reason to send an expensive F-35.

@William Arrington Or better yet the f-35 just sends data link back to F-15EX that fires from safe range, with things like LRASM, JASSM-ER or the upcoming AIM-260. For air to air kills, this is less likely but could be good for burning off their speed making it harder to dodge the F-35's missiles.

Bang on.. The next generation Gripen is the JAS 39 E/F model, and started deliveries to Swedish and Brazilian air forces, in November 2021. (F is the 2 seated trainer model, which was the very first they build as the Gripen Demo).

@@francoisduranddelga1471 Efficiency and performance. Well, what about being able to operate with mini-crews, de-central, without airfield, while being able to cary major Western weapon systems. What I like about the Gripen, that it is designed for extremely small maintenance groups, being able to be turned around by a handful of conscripts and pros with 2 trucks on a country road with a 700m straight stretch in extremely short time. That's a feat no other modern Western or Russian aircraft can do to that extend. Frankly, that's time where the more expensive main competitors are sitting ducks for a missile strike on an airstrip. The capability to do be employed highly decentralized is a performance factor. Avionics, electronic warfare, flight parameters, the Gripen is a pretty decent airframe, too. Even if on paper others are better. The last performance factor is the pilots. During the Alaska Red Flag exercise Gripens scored 10 kills on day one. Among the kills were Typhoon and F16 Block 50+. Indeed one Gripen pilot downed 5 F16 Block 50+ alone. Long story short: It would be a mistake to underestimate the JAS-39 Gripen.

Though the pilot is most of it but when you have true stealth technology, new classified missles with more range , new radar better than the enemy you just have to many advantages for being able to kill super far away. Most experts say nothing exists that can complete the kill chain against American stealth. In cases were they can detect them the radar of existing missles is just to small and weak to hit stealth technology from the US.

@Scott Swan That is just wrong. The missiles radar is small but only used at vary close range. Once the low observable aircraft is detected by a fighters radar, the missile will receive guidance all the way to the target. It may even use an IR seeker to see the target. As long as the launching aircraft can detect the "stelth," the missile will receive guidance. At the ranges involved in the terminal phase of the engagement, no aircraft can hide. The age of "stealth" was limited from the day it was conceived. Nothing is invincible. Now that being said, low observability combined with powerful radars from none low observable platforms, EW from the same platforms, and the kind of system to system networking being employed makes for one hell of an advantage.

Notice we never get to really see the inside of a Carrier. Not enough to gain any info. The structural design of carriers are completely classified. The new ones are several times stronger and even bigger than the older ones. ..they can take anything short of a nuclear warhead. If china was so sure they could sink a carrier they wouldn't be trying to obtain them spending billions on them. Stealth technology does not just come with hard to detect structures and classified skin or paint that absorbs the radar waves they also come with classified scrambling technology, low heat admission and a bunch of other technology they say they can't talk about. The US spends more on black projects than Russia spends on it's entire military and area 51 doesn't hide alein technology. The EX is built to work with the F-22, to be the missile truck that fires on targets that the F-22 designates. They'll eventually be replaced by the same 6th gen fighter.

With loadouts of AIM260 missiles, they may be able to get closer to an enemy than an enemy without being targetable. If China put missiles such as the PL21's on J-20 fighters, the F15 could be vulnerable even if screend by 5th gen friendlies. We're in a situation now that hasn't existed since 1989. There is a real near-peer adversary (China) that's becoming the main threat. That means that last-gen systems may be unable to provide supremacy.

@elwoogie1963 yeah, people don't seem to know just how agile of a dogfighting platform the F-35 is. Now that's not a prototype it can do everything the F-16 and Hornet can but better. It was actually designed to blend the best capabilities of both while offering a superior performance over them in the JSF program. The F-15 EX and F-35 is a squire and knight system, the F-35A fights and sets air dominance so the F-15 can haul the strike payload while also letting the F-35 uses its air to air missiles the F-15 carries for the F-35. That allows the F-35 to carry 6 internal aim 120Ds and the F-15 can carry an additional 6 aim 120Ds or Aim 9Xs letting the F-35 guide them with its IRST

If the tail nozzle of the J-20 is treated like the F-22. I think it's perfect. In this way, stealth performance can be further enhanced. However, at the Zhuhai air show, China's local team has already launched an optimization plan. Hopefully, they can be improved later.

stealth of this aircraft is already compromised just by the shape, not much can be done to it to make it more stealthy because of this. The chinese thought that a stealth coating was the only reason a the US aircraft were stealthy until they got hold of it and tested it themselves... sadly for them it was after the J-20 was already hitting the runway. True stealth aircraft for china will be a few years away yet.

Vector spouts are still suitable. It effectively reduces the chance of the tail nozzle being detected. Especially during high-speed cruising.
