The Novation DrumStation is probably one of the rarer drum machines or drum rack units i've ever come across. I've wanted one for ages, and they always seem to slip passed me, and eventually i convinced myself i didn't need it. Now that i have it i Love! It uses ASM technology with digitally models analog waveshapes and sounds to recreate the sounds of the original Roland TR-808 and Roland TR-909 drum machines. I think it's an incredible alternative giving you access to both machines at once.

I had a Drumstation V2 model like the one you have. I sold it back in 2010 and have regretted it ever since. The one thing I missed the most about it is how hard and deep that 808 bassdrum could get and the fact you could play the 808 kick chromatically across the midi keyboard. That thing had my beats KNOCKIN'!!!!! However. I have a nice assortment of 808 samples in an MPC now plus I have two original TR808s, a Behringer RD-8, and a Roland TR8-S. As a result, I don't see myself ever buying another Drumstation again. I don't need it. Thanks for the review!!!

I’m a big fan of the DrumStation and BassStation rack. I have both and never tire of what they have to offer - hands on fast voice transforming as soon as the sequence gets going. Just enough depth to allow flexibility but not get lost in menus and tweaks. Separate outs going into separate channels of my analogue desk means individual eq, compression and effects. It is a fun and immediately satisfying box of tricks. Marry up with the BassStation and we are magically transported back to 1994 which is no bad place to be

Love my Drumstation(!!!), have had it for decades now, surprised you didn't mention that the pitch can be tied to velocity, so a subtle, microtonal increase in pitch can be heard for fills and whatnot as you drive velocities between 100 and 127, best on snares of course, but also interesting on toms & hats.

Yeah I still have mine(the V1 which I just recently upgraded the chips to the last version v1.3). It’s definitely raw but once you put some processing with it, the sky is the limit. The distortion processing on it is good. I’m using it with the Edisyn patch editor on my Mac to make my own presets. Glad you’re loving it Ricky.

I've always wanted one of these so it was awesome to hear it in action! Another good 1u drum machine - In the late 80s Akai made a 1u drum machine called "XE8". I picked one of these up recently for super cheap and it's an absolute blast (harsh so needs to be tamed). It has that S1000/S3000/MPC3000 punch. I'm not sure why these rack units went out of style, but they're really fun. Thanks for sharing it!

Had one of these in the '90s, they did two versions and I had the second version which is the one you are using in the video. They are not the best sounding to me but are certainly useable. I always found the 909 tones pretty weak, but I had a 909 and the Jomox Airbase, both are a lot better and have more depth. If you can get one cheap, then the Drumstation is okay, but it has to be cheap.
@wackerburg
@wackerburg 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. For 2-300 bucks it's a great machine, saves space and it also is more fun than using samples. Had one for years. Sequenced it with an MPC 2000 or the TR-626. I also used lots of different sample packs, well-made and paid. That being said, I pulled the trigger and finally bought the original machines now. After like 25 years of using the sounds. I did not realize HOW MUCH I was actually "socialized" on TR-909 drums. Basically since I was a teenager. So I bought a 909 about two years ago. Yes. Had to pay the price they cost now. I questioned myself whether all this money was really worth it. Those doubts never crossed my mind after I started using it. It is not only the sounds, but also the workflow which adds greatly to the result. But somehow the sound is much more powerful compared to the aforementioned way of using samples. I primarily settled on "Samples From Mars" and "Goldbaby" for these. Yes, I am aware of other alternatives, looked into those, did not like them. I AM NOT INTERESTED in discussing this further :-D Yes, it would be nice if the prices were lower, but these machines are no Jupiter 8s or Yamaha CS-80s. I am still floored how much punch a 909 has. The myth that it needs to be processed with EQ and compression to achieve that is not true imho. You need to use it "right" and then it just stomps. Love it to death. After that experience, I watched a documentary on the 808 and kinda fell in love with it, too. Totally different machine in my opinion. Sounds cute, pleasant and nice yet present at the same time. Like a way "nicer" kind of power compared to the 909. So I expected a real 808 to be also way different to using samples and looked for one. That was one year ago. I found a great unit, which is serviced and calibrated now. With the 808, samples are even more off from the actual machine. What a difference, I do not know why that is. For instance, the 808 produces signals up to and past 100kHz easily. I did not expect that from a 40 year old machine. It is fun to use, yet quite different from the 909. And the kind of workflow also yields different results. Both machines are pretty demanding from the following chain in my experience. Too much power to handle. Recently, I used my computer as an FX machine and the plugins were really not up to dealing with that energy coming from the 808 whereas decent hardware reverbs, delays and EQ/dynamics even add to the great sound. I think most producers nowadays have no real experience with these machines any more, just like I didn't know what to expect before actually using the originals in depth. As I said again, I do not know why and how the old units do what they do. And yes, I wish they would be cheaper or I bought them a few years back. But then again it is what it is and to this day if you REALLY want the 808/909 experience, you have to buy these. I do not regret those purchases, especially since prices even went up a little - so the money is not lost, for sure.

When I owned OG 808 & 909 originally back in the 80s I had my 808 midied up and clocked them off Steinberg Pro 24 then Cubase sequencer. Then I got the very good Roland S-550 rack sampler and sampled them. Then like many others at the time I sold them for not much money. 1990. Yes, they are absolutely beautiful and tactile objects and wonderful things to use but at the time they just took up too much of my studio space. Sound wise you can get, match or beat the sounds, software or samples and modelling but I suppose nothing beats the whole experience of the OGs. The Roland Boutiques TR-08 and TR-09 that i have now are affordable, small and are a lot of fun. I suppose the biggest difference is the lack of individual outs. The TR-09 is very, very close in terms of sound. The TR-08 is there apart from the hi hats that lack the metallic fizz. The rest of the 08 sounds are great. Very Nice vid Ricky. I like the early Novation stuff.

Biggest issue is the timing via midi. It is always sloppy. We had one of these back in the days. As we had no access to 808s or 909s we headed over to an MPC. That one did the job. Apart of the timing issue, they nailed the sound quite good. I remember I spent lit. DAYS on water and cigarettes jamming with the drumstation and an ATARI ST. 😅

All of the 90s 1u Novation stuff is pretty nice on its own terms. I've been trying to convince myself to sell my Bass Station Rack for years because I have other, "better" analog synths that cover the same ground on paper, but it just has a specific kind of lead sound I can't get from anything else and I use it all the time.

I bought and resold this a couple of times, but the user interface is jurassic compared to the options we have today. Plus you need an extra interface and cabling to operate it. I had one in 1998/1999. The output level is very low so you massively have to turn up gain on the mixer which increases noise. The tweakability of the sounds is very limited, also the polyphony. When I sent a lot of Midi CC's to it in summer 1999 it went into some kind of "freeze" mode and never get out of it. A few hundred bucks wasted. Never again a Novation Drumstation. I now have a Behringer RD8 MKII and Jomox Alpha Base and both are fantastic.

A very fun unit, especially when individually processed via FX. I love my RD9, but not too sure if I have the space for a RD8. So this is tempting to have this give me all the 808 sounds. But finding these for less than $400 sorta just forces you to decide on getting something else, so I see your point. But it’s all supply & demand.

I’m in a similar situation. Have an RD8 and want to add an RD9 but they’re so big! I love having the sequencer built in so wouldn’t replace the RD8 but it would be nice to have something I can put in the rack.

How does this stack up to a Roland TR8 or 8s ?. Those are also analog modelling

as a lover and user of both. The TR8 is more immediate and has a lot more live playability. Both sound great but sound different. The Drus station is CRUNCHY as its pretty low res compared to the tr8. The tr8 sounds fantastic but I usually use outboard effects to get it to slam the way that I want. I do that with the Dstation to.

i had a Drumstation until i bought a TR8s, and had no problems letting it go. It's not a bad substitution for samples if you have a good sequencer.

I think i paid less than £80 for one off these back in the early 2000s. 808 and 909 in a rack was heaven

"Not samples". Hmm, I say. Even in the Drumstation manual they admit some sounds e.g. clap are pure samples. I suspect the other sounds aren't pure DSP modelled either, I think they're layered sampled elements like the 808/909 versions that Roland did for the R8 cards. One of the giveaways is the noise source in the snares, it's sampled noise, same on every hit. The "modelling" bit is that you can blend it with the drum skin tone/sample and adjust decay and tuning. Overall it's a useful box if you can get it for a low price but these days the modern 808/909 options from Roland and Behringer are much better.

Ive Had 2 of them. Theyre cool b/c its 1 rack space, flexible multi out, midi to din synch conversion clockout. BUT its not even remotely as good as many smaller euro rack drum modules. The overall sound is not nearly as girthy as a good analog module
