I have a 2012 FJ I bought new for $26K. It's white and nothing has been altered. I just rolled 52K today. It's garaged and treated gently. All maintenance is done on schedule. I live in Chicago, and I like the look, it's great in the snow; and it's incredibly reliable. It's the best car I've ever had, and I'll never sell it! Thank you for sharing this - I learned a lot!

Toyota should not spend a dime on a new concept. they should bring it back as is. just maybe figure an electric conversion kit that enables a manual version. then, one day, we could convert our gas versions easily. strip it of all the electronic gimmicks to sell cheap. manual door locks, windows ect. we can add all we want later, it s an adventure vehicle. it can be distinctive by being simple and solid. a masculine 4x4, the real deal. good show!

Yep! Exactly! With new 4Runners being made, the prices for used models wont get out of control. But the FJ which is discontinued is worth more now than it was new since we aren't getting any new ones anytime soon. Just like we talk about in the video.

I could never understand the psychology behind this...the FJ and Land cruisers in the USA were all discontinued due to poor sales (FJ and LC 200 series)....once discontinued, all of a sudden, they became popular and people started going after them hyping up their values. I understand why Toyota discontinued the FJ and LC from the American market...if most people don't show interest until they are discontinued or if people choose to buy a Cadillac escalade for 80K instead of a Land Cruiser, then Toyota did the right thing by pulling out of the American market and continuing production in foreign countries that actually care. Great discussion topic!

Its purely because people are set in their ways. For example Me, i Hated the fj, i was in the showroom at the time looking for a landcruiser sahara 150k new. they coudlnt deliver it for 3 to 6 months due to demand. The dealer gave me the keys to an 86 and i hit my head and refused to drive it, he then swapped it for their demo Fj cruiser. After one weekend, i was in love with itb cancelled my order and got an fj. I saw it in japan at hanamura months before by chance. The fj is a rare breed.

I’ve got a 2010 with 133k. Arctic white scheme but came from the port installed withTRD package. It’s a daily. I take it on occasional off road trails. Immaculately maintained mechanically but I haven’t washed it in about a year. But inside I keep it pristine. Like Scotty says, it’s bulletproof and probably sturdier than the 4runner since it’s made by Toyota Hino Truck division.

Great interview, guys!! Thank you for putting it together. What's your thought on having a windshield protection film added to the front windshied (seems notorious for rock chips due to the near high angle IMHO). If it's a good idea, is there a brand you recommend (Clearplex, Exoshield, other)? I'm stoked to own an FJ again; my first FJ was a 2006 4WD in Voodoo Blue. My new-to-me 2014 TTUE automatic was delivered last month via enclosed-carrier from CA to WA; $52k with 42k miles. Sounds like I might have paid a bit too much but the deal's done, so oh well; I love it! No crazy mods; simply a satellite antennae stuck to the inside of the front windshield and a Garmin dashboard disc. Guys at my local Toyo dealership were really impressed; said it's the nicest and cleanest one they've ever seen!👏. While I would love to try off roading, my FJ is going to be garaged and babied. I'm the middle-aged lady that drives it to the grocery store LOL. Past owner put 4 new tires on it that aren't the BF Goodrich A/Ts (though the spare is) so I may trade out cause the white lettering looks great. Personally, I hope Toyota doesn't come out with the same style FJ and does the smaller version so mine will hold and increase in value. Also, happy to have a CD player again so that I can open and listen to my new CD my cousin gave me, Jimmy Buffett's Life on the Flip Side.

I may be one of the few on here saying- No. The value of FJs will not crash if Toyota starts a stateside release of the new FJ. Why. The Final addition only now has stopped and during its run no value or drop has happen stateside. If Toyota did start the model again it would only increase existing well kept previous models, TT and special additions too. Previous models would be original versus , Toyota's newer version would divide folks and drive the old schooler original FJ's up in value. Just my opinion. All the best.

I know this is a old post but i just had this happen to my 07 FJ. I don’t live in a rust belt and have very little rust on the undercarriage of mine so this dangerous occurrence surprised me. Just before taking a rough road trip I looked under the rig and discovered the rear retainer strap on the gas tank had rusted and snapped. I would recommend checking this when vehicle shopping or on every one that owns one and drives the roads. The dealer wants $200 for the pair but they can be purchased for as little as $50 a pair.

Every new generation of 4Runner, Land Cruiser etc does this to the subsequent generation. The difference is that those are sold continuously (i.e. no gap between 4th and 5th gen), so they follow the same trend as every other car. "Here's the new Camry, it's marginally better than the old Camry!" and then the old Camry follows the standard depreciation curve. If there's a ~20 year gap between the FJ Cruiser and its successor, there's a decent chance that the '07-'14 FJC maintains a cult status. Especially if the new one is a 4-cylinder turbo plugin hybrid that focuses more on light offroading than the hardcore stuff. A quick thought experiment for you: if Toyota releases an FJ successor next year that is basically a clone of the new Bronco -- turbocharged V6 with tons of power, removable body panels, front and rear locker etc -- are you paying $40K for an 8 year old FJ Cruiser with 50K miles? Most people won't.

@@jimmy-buffett Key words are "if toyota releases",I am looking at values of past models of broncos and toyota fj40 etc and seeing values increase after the vehicle is brought back.Having said that I would not dabble in the car investment world,boring index funds for me.And yes I would buy the newest iteration of fj simply for the reason you state.I also wonder if the used car market in general is influencing used fj values.
@jimmy-buffett
@jimmy-buffett 2 жыл бұрын
@@joesprague1464 agreed, if Toyota's next 4x4 lineup is just "new exciting trim levels!" for the 4Runner then I'd expect FJ prices to continue to rise. Holding back the "Land Cruiser" model name for the US market (the FJ 300 is only coming here as the Lexus LX) makes me think they're going to do more, but we don't know yet. Re: the larger used market, I'm sure that some amount of "rising tide lifts all boats" is happening for driver-grade FJ's. I often help people cross-shop GX's for FJ's (as I said in the video) and the number of low-miles sub-$40K GX's has definitely gone down. That's disconnected from the collector-grade trucks, which is pure speculation. I'm personally not a fan of "car investing", I've made a few bucks flipping cars but it's all cars that I've wanted to own/enjoy and they just happened to be going up. I personally wouldn't buy a car just because it's going up in value, but I've consulted with a few FJ buyers who are doing just that.

One thing not mentioned is most owners I see are a tad bit older. They may be able to finally afford an fj maybe no more kid passengers. I use to go out and do covid test at vehicles I never once had a mid 20’s kid in an fj. I did have older women and guys in them all the time. Then I have driven by parks and had older people getting out. At work one fj I park by is an older lady. My buddy finally bought his fj in his mid 40’s. I finally got mine in my late 30’s. I should have bought one many years ago when prices were cheaper heck even 4-5 years ago and even saved 5k or so. At times I really think the fj is not the right vehicle for me. I often think I should have went Lexus or 4Runner. The thing I love is my kids love the fj call it the monster truck. I park at work and look back often. I look around at work and have the most unique vehicle in the lot. I stand out. The fj is so over priced and over rated, it’s very basic but the fj some how has character and still makes me say wow. For the next few years I will get to say wow I got to own a vehicle I have always wanted one of my dream cars.

FJ is so nostalgic and has the goods, 4runner is starting to see quite a cost hike at well lately. the GX has it all but i wouldn't buy one if you want to keep equity, unless you're paying cash of course. The Lexus just doesn't hold its value all that well.

Watched this again today, one day after purchasing my latest '14 TTUE on Bring a Trailer for what I would consider an excellent price for what it is, and it’s interesting to see how the market has evolved. Now that a new pending FJ remains a rumor, new engines for Toyotas off road vehicles are now force induced hybrid four cylinder engines, and the demand for ultra reliable naturally aspirated internal combustion engines is on the rise, interest in both well used and gently cared for FJ's continues to rise generally. My ability to score a lower price is a convenient result of temporary general economic conditions (high inflation, high gas prices, the decimation of the cryptocurrency landscape), so I am very pleased with the purchase, and although I drive every car in my collection, interested to see how the market evolves over the next five to ten years.

So I have a question. First thanks for the vid, all of yours I've seen are exceptionally done. I just bought a 2014 Trail Teams Ultimate Edition that has about 75,000 miles for an even $40,000. It was a daily driver but super clean with just a chip in the window (of course). I'm pretty happy that it seems to lie right smack on your trend line, so I guess that's good. Buuuut, as you said in the video, I bought it to go wheeling in. I know it's not super low miles but maybe in 10-20 years a 75K mile 2014 TTUE might be worth a good chunk of change. I want to cover the damn thing in armor (was even thinking of having fender "sliders," or bars, or whatever they're called fabricated to come off the (aftermarket) bumpers like I saw in one of your other videos (again, an excellent, thorough, video). I was also even thinking of wrapping the whole thing in clear to protect the factory paint, but decided that's getting ridiculous. Soooo.....my question is, as I mod it out (all good quality, proper, stuff), do you think I should bother to keep all the original stuff like bumpers, wheels, roof rack, suspension, etc.? I'm approaching middle age and am not planning on doing anything super hard core with it but want it to be capable, and, you know, look bad-ass. :) If I keep the mileage relatively low (not a daily driver and occasional over-landing) do you think it could still be worth something down the road, and if so, will it be worth more with a proper build or converted back to original trim? Or with the mileage it has already maybe it's already beyond any real appreciation in the future. Thanks again for your great videos they have been VERY helpful in my new journey down the FJ path, I can't wait to see some beautiful vistas with it. Maybe this spring/summer I'll even see you guys in the hills of Colorado. :)

Thanks! Congrats in the TTUE as well. My advice is that you bought it to enjoy it so enjoy it! Use it for offroading and have fun but maybe save the miles by not using it as a daily. And I do thing the cleanest builds are those with reversible mods, so that way there is always an option to go back to stock if you did want to sell it. Its hard to speculate if an FJ is worth more with its mods or stock down the road, but you can always take it back to stock and sell the aftermarket parts separately probably for more than if they were still bolted on the FJ. Either way, enjoy it! since that's why you bought it and that's what it is built for, but I would say to take care of it. I like to offroad mine too but I dont do trails where I know the risk of body damage is likely or anything like that since I do care about my FJ a lot and want the most out of it someday when it comes time to sell.

+1 for what Hayden says, build it and enjoy it. Anybody who buys your truck in the future will know that it has been offroaded, but keeping the OEM parts is a sign that you took care of the vehicle. For both of my offroaders ('11 TT FJ, '18 4Runner) I do the same: capable mods but I don't beat it up, I want it to look good. Don't let resale get too much into your head, enjoy the truck -- bring it to Colorado and run trails with us in Ouray! -- and then when you're ready to sell it, you'll be amazed at what it's worth.

A new model of a car has never lowered the value of a previous model. It only makes the original more sought after. Especially when it's the first model and there is already a cult following. The more time that passes the more the new model increases the value.
@FJX2000_Productions

That could certainly be a possibility. Just depends on how much time passes between Toyota deciding to make a "new FJ equivalent" and when the FJ was discontinued, among other things I'm sure.
@jimmy-buffett
@jimmy-buffett 2 жыл бұрын
I have to respectfully disagree, the norm in the car world is that the new version of a car depresses prices of the previous version. Every generation of Corvette, Camry, 4Runner etc makes the previous version less desirable and those older versions follow a standard depreciation curve. Exceptions to this are when there are big time gaps between the model releases -- Mk4 Supra vs Mk5 Supra separated by 21 years, gen1 NSX vs gen2 NSX separated by 12 years -- and when the new model is notably less desirable, like the new 3.5L Tacoma or when the 911 transitioned from air-cooled to water-cooled. I don't think the FJ Cruiser is far enough removed from a potential successor to have a cult following, especially if the new version is significantly upgraded in features or powertrain. But I also think the chances of Toyota releasing such a vehicle are very slim. The beancounters at Toyota HQ would surely object to a reboot of a vehicle that sold ~60K units in its last 4 years.

Toyota has announced plans in October 2022 to stop production and close the production lines on ALL FJs, thats including the ones that were being sold in smaller markets. They even bought out a 'Final edition'. Doesn't sound like they have any plans to bring the FJ back right now. Not one with a combustion engine anyway.

It really depends on how bad the rust is and if you think you can repair the power steering leak easily. But the biggest factor in determining value is not only the year model it is but also how many miles it has on it.

I just picked up a 2013 FJ for 31K with 66k mi at my local dealership. It doesn't have crawl but does have the pods, JBL sub and a rear locker. I wasn't happy to pay it, I think I overpaid by about 5-7k. That said the market is crazy and in my part of the USA options are slim. I guess I feel better know that someone paid 81K for an FJ, but I know mine aren't that car. My 2007 FJ was going to need more work than I was willing to invest. I was going to need to have rust issues on the frame repaired and do a full suspension plus some minor engine work. Clean car move down.

video request: cost and time on how to turn a 2007 (2010) base model 4x4 into one with all the upgrades of a 2014? can an auto get a manual swap? can the rear diff be swapped easily? is the earlier engine actually better with tuning? basically, should I buy a 2007 in my favorite color or hope to find a 2014 in manual?
@FJX2000_Productions

I think you’re better off buying the FJ with the features you want over the color you want. Swapping from auto to manual is technically possible but I’ve never seen it done, the rear diff can be swapped but again, difficult, expensive, and not worth it unless you wheel a ton, and it is debateable if the earlier engine is better for tuning.

Follow the advice given at 20:54, check local listings of similar vehicles (year and mileage, and possibly even package if there are other TTSEs for sale) and then price it based off that. Or search nationally and see what 2011 TTs are for sale across the country as well as their prices based off their mileage, and price yours out based on that.
@jimmy-buffett

Also make sure you list it nationally, AutoTrader usually does pretty well. The 2011 TT (green) is considered by many (or, just me haha) to be the best color on a TT FJ, so you should have a lot of interest.

@FJX2000_Productions

The US has a 25 year import law, so no FJs from other countries have ever been imported and the soonest it could happen is another 10-15 years on the oldest models or foreign FJs, and it wouldn't be until 2047 with current laws that a 2022 FJ could be imported

The thing is with that though is the FJ Cruiser and Land Cruiser like you're referring to are so spread apart and are very different vehicles. One is retro in every way and is a classic while the FJ just has retro styling but is a modern truck like its fellow modern Toyota 4x4s. So unless a "FJ replacement" doesnt happen for another 15 years or so, then that's why we suggested a new model could effect current FJ values.
@jimmy-buffett
@jimmy-buffett 2 жыл бұрын
There's a 24 year gap between the FJ 40 and FJ Cruiser. The old one is legitimately retro (vs just looking retro like the new one), has removable body panels, a fairly easy powertrain upgrade. If Toyota doesn't release a new FJ Cruiser for 20+ years, I suspect you'll be right.

I disagree with a new FJ version crashing older FJs. every time they come out with a new version, then the interest in the old ones go up. except they have not stopped making the current FJ. but, yea, it is a terrible investment. divide say $40,000 profit by 8 or 10 years, plus cost to maintain it and store it. That true of most cars.
@FJX2000_Productions
@FJX2000_Productions 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah it is a bit of a mystery but since the FJ IS still made like you said, it isnt like most cars discontinuation, so a rerelease could certainly have an affect. But I think a considerable amount of time would have to pass before a true new version release would have a significant impact on FJ sales. If it happened this year for example I think it would decrease them, but maybe 10-15 years from now it would really boost them, who knows, it's all just speculation 🤷‍♂️

The collector car market will be nothing compared to the everyday owner who’s transportation gets canceled one day- it will be day one of a major civil unrest.

Last week a 14 FJ with 25 miles sold at a Dealer only (Manheim) auction for $70k to a new Toyota dealer who now has it for sale. Unless Toyota plans to build a FJ to be a direct Wrangler and Bronco competitor. I see no reason for them to bring it back. They already sell a newer and better FJ. It's a 2022 4Runner. Even your guest sold his FJ and now has a 4Runner. Toyota could just build a limited run of current FJs for the US market. Just bring in 500 or 1000 each year at $60k each. They would sell. Their focus is now on the EV market.

I spent about 5 hours during FJ Summit 2019 with some Toyota engineers offroading in my 2018 4Runner, and I had a list of suggestions for them to consider for the 6th gen. "Full length roof rack" and "rear door mounted tire" being two that the FJ does right over the 4Runner. Nothing on my list was offroading related between the FJ and the 4Runner, I have tried hard over the last 3-4 years to find the offroad limits of the 4Runner vs the FJ and they are nearly indistinguishable in offroad capability. I think you're right that Toyota has no reason to bring it back, unless it is something substantially different from the 4Runner. The FJ Cruiser sold ~13-14K trucks from 2010-2014, it's hard to make the case that they should do something truly creative for such a small amount of sales. I actually own Toyota's other "this car shouldn't exist" vehicle, a 2021 LC500 Convertible. They rarely slip one past the beancounters, but when they do it's pretty awesome.

Sorry dont understand it.....let me start with the fact I own i fj. But personally I think in it stock form its one ugly vehicle ,way to much plastic, and to many paint combinations, heck there's like 4 colors on them,no removal top,independent suspension (front). Now like I said I own a fj,and fairly well modified, so looks pretty good. First toyota I've owned,so at this point its 150,000 miles on it,wouldn't at this point I'd say it's any better than my other cars I've had. My son says wait till you get over 200000,then you'll see,his tacoma is like 250,000 ,says best vehicle he's owned. I like my fj alot,but did alot to get it there,and I just don't understand the hype? I would take my 71 bronco i had over it.....not as reliable im sure,but believe it was much tougher on hard core trails. Like I said just blows me away how much someone likes them......good thing though.
