I've read that in the original prototype design, the mirror lights were going to be legitimate spotlights that actually illuminated terrain for off-road. They got scrapped and changed to what they ended up as in production. That was one of a few designs that got scrapped in final production, another cool one was the shifter was supposed to be able to disconnect and be used as a handle for a shovel, hence the weird design.

Some of the problems you mentioned I had to repair around 100,000 miles, alternator, bearings, and cv axles! Normal maintenance included front struts, front brakes 2xs, rears 1time simply because there was a ball bearing in the original rotor, which wore a 1/2 Grove in the rotor and pads! I can only hope that I get the service out of this vehicle that I got out of my 4runner!

Excellent review of the things to look for on an FJC! Big thanks for verifying what problems the owner needs to keep in mind. On my '08 with 170,000 miles (owned since new) I haven't had issues with most of the problems mentioned but I have had to replace the throttle body at about 70,000 miles and replaced both front wheel bearings at about 90,000 miles. As for the windshield, I'm on about my 4th one and it has several minor chips. Always used premium and glad I have based on your comments. It's not my primary vehicle and used mostly on summer road trips out west from the southeast pulling a small offroad camper. Before each long distance road trip I take it in to the dealer for an oil change, tire rotation if needed, and a good visual inspection by the shop techs. I'll have all fluids changed or topped off as advisable. So far, the FJ has never let me down. Again, great review! I think I'll go pop the hood and crawl under it to check things out (again!).

Sure, I've considered lifting it, but the short wheelbase lets me conquer obstacles without a fuss. Thank you, AMD. I have a set of factory takeoff Gen3 Tacoma alloy wheels to replace the stock steel wheels on a 2009 Access Cab, then it will be time to start back on Dad's annual Toyota dealer checkup. Regarding the erect FJ windshield, the old International Scout II (1971-1980) windshield was completely flat. (IH did not coat the interior side of body panels to prevent corrosion until 1979, so I visited quite a number of people in Alaska, who admired the 25 year old 1971 that I was driving, and remarked, "We loved the one we had, and it rusted away..." Thank you again for prompting me to look at VLEDS bulbs, located at the opposite end of Washington state from me.

The Trail Teams plaque is on the far right corner on the flat wall above the passenger side glove box. I did not know about some of the problems you mentioned on the 07-09 engines. I have a 2007 and have not encountered any of them. I always wondered why the plug change interval was so low. Thanks for that. I will be keeping an eye and ear out for the wheel bearings as I am at 137K miles. I have heard about the alternator going around 140 - 150K so I hope to be ready for that. I am considering doing a change before it fails, we shall see. I did have all the pulleys and belt changed around 130K when the one started screaming. Thanks again for this very informative video!

My 2008 has two fixed cracks but I’ve never had to replace it. So far my undercarriage looks new and I’ve only had to replace the bearings and alternator recently. Best car tk have if you want something fun on the weekends. Better than driving a jeep or bronco that are dime a dozen now.

Trail Teams! Of course not an FJ Cruiser owner, but I know a lot about a lot of 4x4s. A 4x4 enthusiast if you will. Great platform that I recommend to everyone. 4Runner, GX, Tacoma. Made in Japan preferred.

I've always felt the same way about the mirror lights. I have the now-hard-to-find EZ View mirrors on my FJ, and I'll never risk breaking them to replace a useless light bulb (I broke one OEM mirror when installing my EZ views). Once those bulbs go, I'm just going to leave them alone, as you would.

I live in Pennsylvania so the roads are treated in the winter. I will check the things you pointed out, so far no issue. Thanks for your Video.

Lol...And the windshield will never disapoint. Ive replaced all the fluid except the transmission. New pulleys, waterpump, radiador hoses, thermostat, alternator, gas tank straps, tune-up, breaks, tires and led lights. Also grease all the fittings. Especialy on the driveshaft. It will start to feel like your braking after you came to a complete stop. Oil change every 3,000 or less. About to change the transmission fluid and possible the wheel bearings this summer. I have a black 2007 with 130,000. I've done most of this for preventitive maintnace. Not things breaking. I live in rusty land wisconsin. Every spring I take a 6 pack of Rustoleum rust converter spray paint to the underbody. Great video. I've watched it at least 8 times.

Another indication of the bearing issues is the poor tire wear. That Cooper Discoverers version tires were bad for cupping if the bearings, &/or alignment issues. Very minor issues show up. A problem with that version of Discoverers. Is that possibly a frame replacement? I suspect not, as there was little rust elsewhere. Very nice truck!!!
