Backstory: I played this as a kid all the time. Once with my dad I took "too long" to save Pikachu, and my dad (who uses to be a real DnD DM) told me Pikachu died. That mf killed Pikachu.

Narus Ferree That definitely needs to be a thing. But it'll be so long... Since there's the entire main story you have to think about. But I think it'll be fun, especially if it was a daily online game.

me and my siblings freaking loved this game, after a while we started coming up with our own Adventures instead of the one in the booklet. I made my own Pokemon out of cardboard and paper, I tried so hard to make them balanced we just wanted more Pokemon in the game!! I'm pretty sure my sister even help us roleplay contests, I made ribbons for em too.

@Joost8910 6 жыл бұрын
Nah, it definitely would be the Pokemon making a saving throw.
@BigKlingy
@BigKlingy 6 жыл бұрын
Well, the way it works in the game is based off both randomness, a modifier for the Pokeball, and a modifier based on the state the Pokemon is in. So I feel it'd be more like a contested roll: you make a D20 roll and add your Pokeball's modifier, vs the Pokemon making a roll modified by how much health it has, if it's statused, etc. Also the Catch Rate mechanic from the games could be worked into Challenge Rating somehow.

Hey JWittz, you should do something on Pokémon: Tabletop Adventures. It's not an official product, but it's basically a more grown up version of Pokémon D&D. I've been playing for a couple of years now and it's pretty fun imo!
@Fooacta
@Fooacta 6 жыл бұрын
Digizel the Bui I love me some PTA, but you have to make sure that you play with a group and a GM who are okay about being loose and creative with the rules. Everything that doesn't involve combat is wildly underdeveloped and the combat is pretty unbalanced. As long as you play with a strong narrative and no-one is trying to "win" the game, it's still a great time.
@DigitalxGamer
@DigitalxGamer 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, my group has had to house rule a bunch of stuff. It's definitely not as thorough as D&D is. We also find it more fun to come up with a list of our favorite Pokémon ahead of time as a "final roster" of sorts and submit that to the GM, who will work those Pokémon into the story or individual arcs somehow. But there's just so much character variety and varying abilities the *trainers* can have. XD It's so fun discovering new ways a trainer can influence the battle and such. I remember I once used an Aura User who planned to take over a gym specializing in Fighting-types now that his mentor, the Gym Leader, promoted to the Elites of the regional league. But since his mentor is known for having befriended the Swords of Justice, he became a chosen partner for Keldeo later in the story. And our GM worked it in so that, despite the fact it's supposed to be restricted to the Ranger class, my character could become a Signer. And that was a pretty sweet combination...although he only had Keldeo's crest to use.

@@DigitalxGamer I really like the way they did trainers, and the liberties they took with what you can do as a trainer. At first I thought it was awful, being a purist, but then I started to think about it and realized how cool it was. Pretty much the identical experience I had when TMs went from one use to unlimited use. Like, being able to change a pokemon's type, for some of the classes has nothing like that in the games... but it's not a bad idea, and if you want to be a type master, which iirc is one of the classes, it's really neat being able to take any pokemon and through your knowledge and expertise, change one of its types to the one you specialize in. If you're a Steel master, hey, why NOT have a Fire/Steel Charizard?
@DigitalxGamer
@DigitalxGamer 4 жыл бұрын
@@Shenaldrac Oh yeah, definitely. I was a little bit iffy on it at first, but in practice it definitely works out really well~ I remember a long time ago, I ended up having a Water/Electric Floatzel and that was pretty fun. My group also has its own house ruleset for PMD-style campaigns as well, for when we want something a bit more simplified. Drop the humans and focus on the Pokemon. Make them more durable, able to learn feats that can mess with move ranges, types, change their base capabilities, etc.

A few years ago we played a fan made pokemon pen and paper. It was pretty awesome. It has rules to quickly bring any pokemon from the video games to the table. You choose your trainer class at character creation. Basically your playing one of the trainer enemy archetypes from the video games like bug catcher, black belt, sailor, gentleman/lady and so on. The GM build a new region for us and even made us badges :) It was pretty fun. I played a Pokemon Ranger with a shuckle as his starter. As a Ranger I could try to get wild pokemon to help me with certain things, a bit like wild empathy from a D&D druid. I started specialising in using the out of combat options for pokemon. My Pottrott could summon stacks of stones (used it to stop the bad guys from using their car) Plant pokemon can let vines grow upon a wall so you can climb up. The battles where nice, but I rly enjoyed to explore the non combat options for Pokemon.

I played this when I was 7 years old with my mom back in 2002! I'd played some of Pokémon red and loved the show. I think my mom got the idea for this because she wanted me getting less time attached to screens. I remember playing it for a few nights a week for a week or two until we finished the scenario. I actually have really fond memories of the "Dora the Explorer" like descriptive exercises. I liked reading and writing stories as a kid, and loved playing pretend, so the gentle 'immersive' aspect of the game really appealed to me. They're actually not far off questions for a GM to use in an adult tabletop RPG like DnD! I think when I was little I was sad the game ended pretty quickly, but I mostly remember it as a really cozy bonding experience with mom on some evenings when I was very little 😊

I have a soft spot for this game cuz I remember playing it with my brother as a kid and our mom being the DM and doing her best to imitate the anime character voices for us while we played. I remember she tried for a long time to try and find the second box that never came out, and we were always bummed we were never able to finish our quest. But we both still have fond memories of playing it together up in our cabin on rainy weekends

It's be really easy to grow this idea to fit a more "adult" tabletop experience. You can replace the dice with d20 (and/or the others), use Pokemon Trading Cards in place of the cards the game provide, use toys and figures as minis, and even create your own stories and campaigns. Pretty neat.

Wow, those cards are really high quality! They are super thick and I really like the style with all the stats and info put inside of a pokedex. The artwork of the actual Pokemon looks a little bland, but they should really expand on this. Imagine if they upgraded this to an older target audience. Give it some higher quality art work for the Pokemon and, make the game a little more complex. They could really have something here.

I actually own this is a kid, though I never got a chance to play it. It did inspire me to try to come up with my own adventure ( a long time before I knew it Dungeons & Dragons was, or what tabletop gaming was) I think I still may have part of the cards in storage, possibly even the entire game minus one or two of the trainer cards.

Every single time you cover some piece of obscure Pokemon related game material, I'm reminded that yes, I did have this as a kid, and no I had no idea what I was doing with it.

I actually planned to look into making a pokemon D&D campaign using the TCG cards. Like, everyone would play their trainer and the cards would serve as guidelines for what pokemon they can catch and what they can and can't do. Never got anywhere because I still need to take part in some actual DnD Campaigns so I can better understand how the game works (videos and books are nice and all, but I need some hands-on experience so I don't become some sort of cruel god of a DM.)

For the longest time I had some of these cardstock Pokemon cards sitting around my house and had no idea where they came from! This video solved the biggest mystery of my childhood! I’m still not sure how we came to own them though, since we never had a copy of Pokemon Jr.

I remember reading Stan!'s website, where it declared that Pokemon Jr. was the best-selling roleplaying game product of all time--later dethroned by Dungeons and Dragons 4e and in turn 5e. 4e actually made the New York Times bestseller list, so that should put into perspective how little roleplaying games usually sell given how many of them there are. There's also at least three games inspired by or parodying Pokemon: Pokethulhu, a freeware game parodying the anime, Cute 'n Fuzzy Cockfighting Seizure Monsters, a supplement for the anime-themed RPG Big Eyes Small Mouth, and the gothic-horror Monsters and Other Childish Things.

My first intro to D&D was Advanced Dungeons and Dragons which I picked up in a game shop while looking for MtG cards. PS: "Dice, Camera, Action" = Pure Awesomeness. Just putting that out there. :D

Oh wow, I remember getting this in 2nd grade! I don't think I ever played it like you were supposed to. But I took the basic game mechanics and cards and smushed them up with chutes and ladders to make my own fun game.

I think I had this as a kid, me and my brother used to play it together. All I remember is it was super hard to catch Pokemon, and even if we did, Team Rocket would steal them right away. As harsh as that is, it always seemed weird to me, from a story perspective, that they didn't steal your starter, even if it's your best/only Pokemon

I remember having this game when I was really little. I don't think I ever actually played the game (The D&D comparison took me by surprise.) but I have fond memories of the cards... Then I got real Pokémon cards and I think this old game might be decomposing under the children's fort in my parent's backyard.

In Tabletop Simulator and overall on the net you can find something called Pokerole. Its a really good fully fledged Pokemon DnD and it looks really official with the art and rulebook but its a fan creation.

I remember this game. I actually played it once with my brother and my father. All I really remember about it is that we lost to the fight with team rocket and I got upset that I was losing almost all of my pokemon. I don't remember what happened to the game after that one time we played. Probably it ended up in the trash. I've gotten into D&D in recent years, but no one else in my family really cares about roleplaying. (brother only likes the battles and he gets bored with 5e's combat system. He liked 4e though.

I remember having this as a kid, or at least my grandparents had it. I didn't really get to play it all that much, and I forgot about it entirely until seeing this video. Honestly I'd love to see something like this come into existence nowadays. I'm imagining it never happening officially again though. Might be best for a fan game thing to be made for it. And hey, if it's not electronic, it'd be really hard for Nintendo to take down as well. ...I might actually be wrong about how hard it is to take down, but obviously they can't confiscate physical cards.

I vaguely remember getting this for Christmas as a kid one year, and then never being able to find it again. I thought it was a super cool idea, although given the fact that sequel versions were never made like intended maybe that's for the best.

I played this a lot as a kid with my sister, we wouldn't really roleplay (I didn't understand D&D as a kid and just thought it was a write up of the anime), but we would battle each other using the cards. I kind of saw it as Pokemon TCG but for little kids, and we made these weird hybrid rules for the game we played.

There's actually a great tabletop Pokemon game going around nowadays called Pokerole! I use the system for a Pokemon Mystery Dungeon type campaign. It's more geared towards storytelling and I think my players are all really enjoying it so far.

I remember really appreciating the brutal elements to the Pokemon Jr. for some reason. Perhaps it was because my brother and I were in the mood for a hardcore tabletop experience, and this is all we had at the time. I suppose it also helps that it was Pokemon...and I can't turn down anything Pokemon related apparently!
