Aside from the foreign stars like Rijkaard, Van Basten, Davids, Trezeguet, Zizou, R9, Nedved and the likes, they are also producing Italian stars. "more early nineties". Yes, he did have a tough few years at both Milan clubs, but still produced some incredible moments - the 4-5 victory over Roma (one of the, if not the very best, creative performances I have ever seen), coming off the bench to beat Madrid, the CL playoff vs Parma... Also, he arguably had his very best season at Bologna (goals, assists, impact and fitness), and his magical spell at Brescia, right up to the very end, defied belief.

Whats always struck me was the combination of talents in EVERY single team. Besides the well known ac milan, Juventus n inter there were incredibly fun teams such as parma with buffon, thuram, cannavaro n crespo. Fiorentina with rui Costa and batistuta, brescia for a period had a young pirlo with an old baggio and the legend mazzone as their manager. Lazio had stam, mihajilovic, nedved and nesta, roma with totti, cassano, Cafu, montella and Batistuta. And this is just 2000's, when serie a was losing its dominance. If you go back to the 90's n 80's you realize how dominant it really was. A balon d'or winner Van Basten was expected to be a bench option when he first joined ac milan, same story goes for papin almost 10 years later. Pick the greatest players from the 80's to the late 00's, 90% of whoever gets picked has had an important phase of his career in italy. So sad thinking i couldn't live it irl but just on old videos n stories.

You could build 10 different top fives and they would all be brilliant that’s how strong serie a was For me, Baresi, Van Basten, Baggio, Batigol and Vialli. Picking these legends isn’t necessarily because they were the best but they had moments and many of them where they were wonderful. Van Basten 91-92 season was outstanding finishing with 25 goals in 34 games and staying injury free. Baresi marshalled Milan to only conceding 15 goals in 34 games. Batigol staying with Fiorentina even when in Serie B and helping them gain promotion again and being a machine throughout the 90’s. Baggio winning the ballon D’or due to his efforts in the league and in Europe with juventus. All class that period. Vialli during that 90-91 season winning Serie a with Sampdoria huge against the traditional powerhouse teams

I can't take any list like this seriously if Roberto Baggio's name doesn't appear on it. He was the face of Italian football for the 90's; starting with his genius at Fiorentina, the riots when he left them, THAT goal at the 1990 World Cup.... and was magnificent into the 2000's with Brescia. Zidane, and especially Ronaldo were awesome, yes. But Baggio not only matched their quality, he exceeded them imo, producing even more magical moments. He was elegant and could create like Zidane and dribble, feint and score like Ronaldo, plus he was a setpiece wizard. Baggio was there for the entire decade, playing for Fiorentina, Juve, Milan, Bologna, and Inter. Then you have his story, his terrible, crippling, injuries, his fightback, the levels/feats he hit despite never fully recovering and playing for rigid coaches who appeared to do their damnedest to spite his talent, his iconic look... For me, and I expect many others, Baggio was the headline star of Italian football during that magical time. For everyone else, there were co-stars, those who excelled and stayed for more than a couple of years (too many to mention), guest stars (Hagi, Effenberg, Moller, Sammer, Bergkamp, Roberto Carlos, ) and cameos (Henry)

You have to thank to Berlusconi at the end of 80's,making italian club faster move by bringing Sacchi which made high defensive line The machine Gullit,Van Basten,Rijkaard Milan won 4-0 on final which caught all attention, then Napoli bring Maradona,Inter bring the German,Sampdoria has Vialli Inter vs Milan vs Napoli vs Sampdoria Brutal era but also taking advantage from english club ban

Serie A thoose years was more like a Legue as tough as the nowdays CL.... All the best players in the entire World played in Serie A... and all the strongest players from other Nations too... not only Dutch, French, Brazilians or Argentinians... but also the top players from evrywere, Japan, Africa, Slavic Countries... I think 90/2000 Serie A was better than nowdays Premier, maybe also for the type of game we had in the past and for the personality of old school players... all about pride and honor, not like nowadays only trophies and money 🤷‍♂️

Juventus was the best team in the world in the 90’s, so unlucky they lost two out of three straight UCL finals, also watching the match again you can see the countless ref mistakes against them in the game especially vs Dortmund in ‘97 but in part also against Real in ‘98

@@sgt_chugganuggzwhat a strange reply to the op. Baggio was on another level. As was Totti. Levels above. Del Piero was a very good technical plsyer but they were genius.

@@VincentBlackLightning I agree totti was fantastic,I'll take del P solely because the ability to control movement as a false 9,freekicks ,penalty's the guy basically had it all and is part the reason I love seeing a false 9 ,it's opinions. Deffo agree about baggio but his form never really recovered after that penalty brilliant talent none the less.

@@sgt_chugganuggz Baggio did all that with no knees from 20 though..Del Piero to be fair never recovered from his knee injury in late 90s so as good as he was he was after that he was still a shadow of what he could have been. I put Baggio and Del Piero in a bracket as second strikers. They are more comparable player wise although Baggio could cross over into the bracket Totti was. Totti being at his prime a classic pure playmaker. The traditional number 10. He was unique. When people say Del Peiro was better its because he won at Juve but Mr Juve himself (lippi) built the national team around Totti and that says it all. Totti and Spalletti invented the false 9 when Roma have an injury crisis. Essentially Totti had multiple careers and reinvented himself numerous times. The game today would try to control and box in such a creative talent. He wasn't worried about 99% pass accuracy with 5 yard side passes. He went for the insane killer pass nobody else seen. The game needs to make space for these players again or it will become too regimented. Everybody wants to be Pep, the grandmaster and the players just pawns but there has to be a compromise with unique genius players. Unfortunately, the overcoaching from 12 years old may knock that out of them. Hopefully some clubs, managers see and understand this in the time ahead or the game will suffer.
